Petunia purpose is to run 68K apps on a OS4, converting 68K instructions in PowerPC ones.

Yes.

It also forwards the 68K API calls to the corresponding native ones.

Petunia does not, the stubs are part of PowerPC libraries.

I wrote about having (the service offered by) Petunia AND a sandbox (for the running 68K app).

You cannot have both currently.

Álmos Rajnai spent another 5 years of his life writing a JIT compiler for (e)UAE, this is not Petunia, this is a different JIT compiler that was designed for different requirements.

A sandbox runs an application in an isolated environment, so that it cannot damage other apps, or even the o.s.. However it can allow some form of resource sharing.

Well yes (e)UAE does, provide similar resource sharing as (Win)UAE, it shares the keyboard, mouse, hard disk, file-system, sound-card, CPU, RAM and so on.

First, you compared Petunia and WinUAE approach. As OS4 offers both sandbox and single enviroment, it is clearly superior.

to which price?

and as long you only use 68k what is the advantage? And there is at least one OS on 68k that is also in development.

I wrote nothing against plain 68k enviroment or still improving AROS68k. I tried to show advantages of integration of "guest" and "host" applications (by terms of cdmauro) in one enviroment.

you are wrong that it is not possible on WinUAE. I know at least from Wazp3D that there is a dll that accellerates 3D. So it is certainly possible but you would need a adapted OS and specific dlls

as long you are not interested in PPC buying embedded hardware at price of highend desktops makes no sense. And running AmigaOS on UAE has its technical limits.

Forget about PowerPC. Imagine AROS x86 with Petunia/Trance-like 68k JIT + RunInUAE-like UAE integration. Perfect combination.

that would be nice indeed... there was even a project trying it but then stopped (propably developer lost interest)

the problem is... who does it?

Even MorphOS will (when ISA changes) drop it because of this reason... lack of manpower

oh..this was tricky? you know you can run as many winuae instances at once ? and, i one of the behaves badly so it crashes. then everyone is doomed

i run one winua os4.1.6 one 4.1final and one 64k just for fun.. and it does run fast enough. but if something goes wrong in winuae, windows is treating all winua as one application

I have not tested that yet because I normally only run one instance but it would be a little surprising me

it only crashes all instances of one applications or whole system?

many are happy with it and not willing or able to pay the premium price. For the money your Sam costs you get a PC that is multiple faster with much more resources

It is good to have choice.

Still many buy it, because UAE is nor sufficient for them.

"many" is relativ... you see that there is theoretical much more interest at how often "classic" version was sold (surprising how many Cyberstorm hardware was sold obviously )

some perhaps are not interested because of needed room but majority does not buy it because of price

But that is Hyperions decision

A integrated concept like Petunia without doubt has advantages compared to a pure blackbox solution. But somebody has to do it. It is a matter of time till only AmigaOS will have it. Or MorphOS will support both new and old hardware. But then it will be interesting to see how bugfree new updates will be.
