They could have done this years ago. In fact when ARM started taking over they should have implemented a licensing scheme there and then. They had a portion of the market then ARM stretched out and suddenly a STRONG ARM was taking everything.

That would be nice. At the end of the day, it's all electronics and transistors inside an IC. But this seems like comparing a rotary engine with a piston engine. Both made out of the same basic materials and made for the same purpose but with different approaches to performing it.
Right now alternatives seem to be nothing more than doing basically the same thing but from another company manufacturing elsewhere in another factory. Barely more than competition. If you compare AMD with Intel.
