Note, though, that Warp3D development will be dropped in the not-too-distant future in favor of a direct OpenGL implementation, i.e. instead of doing OpenGL->Warp3D->Hardware, the future will be OpenGL->Hardware, without a Warp3D layer in between |
So in the not-too-distant future AmigaOS will be another linux OS? it looks like progressively it´s being replacing more and more AmigaOS things with linux equivalents. What´s next replacing AHI with OpenAL?_________________ No PowerPC, No Fun Make Amiga Great Again |

Uhm, what on earth does OpenGL have to do with Linux? Linux is like WORSE than AmigaOS when it comes to OpenGL support for graphics cards _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Warp3D (the current) is quite different than OpenGL. It works on much lower level. Check the APIs and you will see ;) |

Unless you have a card that's supported, but that does an end run on the statement anyway I guess. _________________ "If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you." - Oscar Wilde |

Huh ? OpenGL is cross-platform. It doesn't have anything to do with Linux.
The motivation behind this step is very easy: The Warp3D API contains many errors, errors that I would, in retrospect, no longer make.
But it shows that it's difficutl to do something right. For a 3D API, this means several things:
- First of all, you have to design an API. This is not a small task, given the complexity of 3d graphics.
- Second, you need to implement this, probably with a model driver (either a well-known chip, or a software renderer).
- Third, you realize your mistakes and redesign the API.
- Fourth, you finally implement it correctly and write the appropriate drivers.
With a move to OpenGL/Mesa, we can skip all but step 4... Go figure...
So the option is to have 3D graphics in, say, two or three months, or a year. And I mean 3D graphics with T&L, vertex and pixel shaders etc.
Go figure, and choose what you rather have.

Not only that... As I said, OpenGL is available as an API, and many years of development went into it.
We can not reproduce that without making making mistakes. We could use some other API as guideline, but what would be the result ? And OpenGL clone, or a Direct3D clone...
Besides, OpenGL is also well understood by developers... Since developers are generally lazy (yeah ) they don't want to learn something else..._________________ Thomas, the kernel guy

You should play Quake2 on the Amigaworld-Server first. Only PC morons there. _________________ Pegasos PPC with MorphOS |

How do you figure that? I've played there a lot this past week and as far as I can tell most people have been playing on Amigas, including an A1200, an A4000 and some AmigaOnes aswell. |

Guilty I've got an 8 Gig Quake2 directory on this PC, tricked out with every custom Hires texture pak I've ever found, every mod I've ever played, every model I've ever seen, every expansion known to ID, every opensourced client known to man. (well, this man anyway), and .dm2 demos from every game I've played pretty much since 1999.
8 years of accumulated crap pretty much locks me into this PC for Quake2 usage.

Hehe I didn't mean there are no PC users at all, or that there shouldn't be, just that there are a lot of actual Amiga players around |

Yes, but what are you gonna use as the driver API, OpenGL doesn't define one, does it?
Edit:
Wouldn't a stripped down (and corrected) W3D version do as a driver API? Last edited by AMiGR on 19-Aug-2005 at 02:42 PM.

Have you read Entilzha's signature lately?
I'm just waiting for him to swap to one of the many other quotes from AmiGBG.
My favourite was of course: "You're out of beer. It's my fault, but it's your problem."
I drank all of Matthias' beer AND all of Kjell's beer, you see. On the same day, even. And the same day I managed to excuse myself by saying I was Norwegian when someone wanted to know how to do something.
All in all, a good weekend for the quote collectors. _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C).
