@hatschi

No it's not the hardwareholding things up they are still improving and adding things to the AOS4.0

Everyday something new is updated and more improvements are being made.

on Dec16 at the next LICA meeting there will be a demonstration of the latest beta AOS4
running on a micro, A1XE and on a A1200.

if they don't shoot me first for letting some of the nice thing's beta tester are playing with
and to answer your question before you ask. it takes a great deal of time for everything to get setup so they can release a public update to be honest they still screw the heck out of the beta test full releases. Remember it is like hearding cats you have a whole bunch of programmers working on bits and peices aroung the world. It takes a bit of time for someone to gather all of the seperate programs, write and test the release.
time they would rather spend right now working on the finishing the OS.

some of the nice things improved on that I can think of

beta testers can update uboot from workbench ( I love how you get flashed when it finishes flashing )1.4 uboot I think is the latest I am allowed to play with

improved 68kemulator now more things work.

improved USB support.

ubootprefs now offers all of the OS4 options along with DMA for the VIA,Sil680,and two and four SATA port cards.

JIT now works with a black list so everything gets JIT except programs that are put in the blacklist. everytime you start a 68K program it checks the list if it is not listed it runs through petunia. Right now you can add programs to the black list manualy or with a little arexx scipt.

fixes for lots of the radeon bugs.

Port improvments and other small bugs are squashed and new ones caused on a daily basis.

so I know it is tough to not know what is going but rest assured work is going forward still today.

@kgrach

I was never under the impression that OS4 is finished and just waiting in the shelves.
What I tried is to damper this "When is it finally released? Around Christmas? I can't wait any longer?" whining by saying that there also needs to be a second thing to make up a proper system - new hardware.

Btw, what does "final" mean - would you consider XP final? It's being patched on a nearly weekly basis...

I know for sure that Troika and
ACK will be able to provide hardwares to run OS4

Do you got any insiders info or something?? Alot of hardware has been promised in the past without even getting to the prototype stage... I do hope both ack and troika will fulfill the promise of hardware, but i do not believe it until you can actually buy them.

Eyetech has done far more than both Troika and Ack so far. Hopefully that will change in the not so distant future.

I think Hyperion is working extremely hard to get AOS4 out yesterday.

I would NOT be surpriced if it is released & shipped before the year end.

Everyone here with A1 hardware is already running OS4. Sure beta but good. It was never said that OS4 Final would be out around x-mas. They hoped it could be around that time.

@Helgis

You always start with in a thread and in the end always .

About Eyetech. They deserve more credit. The reason that they are quiet has really nothing to do with short supplies or not wanting to do anything anymore.

@Coder who said:

I.E. You know the real reason, but can't tell? :^)

Certainly it doesn't make sense that short supplies are STILL the reason for no mobos. Eyetech may be small fish for Motorola/IBM/whoever-makes-their-PPC-chips, but they still would have gotten *some* processors by now!

@ChrisH

From what I know is that they had a batch waiting (the interview with Alan I think) which they would sell. After that they might stop. But that Alan does not show up anymore with news or release some boards has really nothing to do with short supplies or not caring about it/us. I admit they should/could have done better with the selling/problems before and I do have some critisism about that. But for the situation that we have now Alan is not to blame. One day it will all come out.

If anyone's interested in my opnion...

This of is all pointless speculation of course, but I'll say it anyway.

I believe OS4 is as close to final as it can be but naturally there's no point in releasing in OS without hardware so we won't see it until hardware is ready.

Eyetech aren't a nasty corp that have deceived us but are a damn hard working bunch of business people that know exactly what they need to do to get hardware to us again. The delay may well be down to third party companies that Eyetech are relying on. Alan, keep it up mate. It'll all work out.

Saying that though, Troika & Eyetech have made massive steps in developing a hardware solution & both prototype boards are undergoing heavy testing with OS4 to ensure compatability & stability before the mass production begins.

We all have to be a little more patient & wait a little longer. OS4 & the new hardware will be better for it.

[soap box]

In the mean time get our heads down & provide something for OS4:

- Does anyone have any time to help out www.intuitionbase.com. Ryu could do with a couple of helping hands with some things. Contact him. Please.

- Is anyone out there a dab hand with pixels? Knock together a skin for your favorite application.

- Head to OS4Depot. You see all those super things you're downloading. Check to see if there's a screen shot of them. If not, use SGrab & post a shot of the program.

- I won't go down the programming route. All hands are on deck with that one

- Unless you fancy giving it a go. Amon-Re has started a first steps guide. Find the time to get your hands dirty.

- Lastly, we haven't been forgotten. Don't forget that.

[/soap box]

FuZion.
