Anoyone with a DVD-writer should be interested in large-file support as large DVD ISOs are larger than 4GB. Likewise this is an essential feature if we are ever to get modern video editing software back onto the Amiga. Note that currently no available file-system supports files >4GB (although they do support partitions larger than 4GB).

I use SFS on my OS4 boot partition, and I want the support for file larger than 4Gb too!

For this alone, we need greater than 4GB file support, although if you look at the file layout of commercial DVD's the files are all about 1Gb. For archiving and DVD .iso creation this is a must.

I also use SFS on all my partions. And I have a DVD burner in my Amiga
which is quite useless until I get a filsystem which support atleast 9GB
file size (dual layer DVD is 8.5GB and single layer is 4.7GB).

I don't mind at all if SFS get new structures and I have to reformat all
partions with the new version. Just aslong as we get it

I use it, too on my Work Partition called Bob. What about 64Bit Support of FFS2 ? If you have a 8 GB file on HDD isn't it yet possible to copy it to DVD ? Or is there another program involved then OS4 ?

I've been told that FFS (or FFS2) don't support >4GB files and are unsuitable for large files anyway, as there is a large overhead involved for any file larger than a few megabytes (the overhead increases rapidly as the file-size increases). Hence 4GB+ files would be painful to use on an FFS partition even if it had the capability. So updating SFS is currently the best option.

With update 4 the DOS library supports 64-bit file access. All we need is a filesystem that also supports it. Of course, some programs will need to be modified to use the 64-bit functions as well.

Not worth the effort, believe me. The FFS data structures don't support more than 32 bits for fie sizes. While this could be tweaked (the 'long name version' of the FFS is a modification of the existing FFS data structures), you'd still have the problem that the larger FFS files become, the slower access to those files becomes at the same time. As I wrote, scalability is poor.

The FFS reimplementation won't let you create files that large. Before the file size can flip over the 4 GByte boundary (or 2 GByte boundary for the older version) it will refuse to store further data in the file. I'm not sure what the original FFS does, but my best guess is that it is not aware of any file size issues and happily steps into the void, like Wile E. Coyote in the Road Runner cartoons.

I also use SFS on BOTH my AmigaOne OS 4 systems. So yes, I also would like support for files > 4GB.

Definitely. Besides, media files are getting bigger and bigger, so this is going to very soon change from "nice to have for this specific case" to "always need it"

I'm hoping to one day do NLE on an AmigaOne. NLE files consume colossal space, so yes, files >4GB please!

i'm for it too.
large files, filenames, (comments are a must have too, don't drop it) and large disks / partions support too.
i'll try to do a small donation to sfs next month.

though i'd like to hear about other os4 specialists opinion (official ones) on the matters. is sfs supported by hyperion, i mean on the long term is sfs will be the official fs for os4?
if not, do they have another plan?
i can't think they plan to stay with poorly specced fs, they must have either some plan about updating ffs, or let the place for some or competent fs.
sfs might be it, what do you think? (hyperion, and everyone else.)
what are the plans for the future on this point ?
shall we all support sfs?

that makes me wonder what's their plans ;)
..on the top of that they implemented 64bit dos support,
one step in this direction, i suppose they won't stop here.

anyway, sfs was alway a quality choice for fs and served well..
deserve respect and support imho.

about os4 official fs, we'll see in due time what they're after :)
..think it might "mutate at some point :)
