I think it's very uncommon to have noise on the SB Live without playing anything. It almost sounds like the card isn't fitted fully. Can you try a different PCI slot, preferably the bottom one?

I will try a different slot, but the sound is perfect with AMP and Amplifier. I also notice that the system really drags when using DVPlayer or MPlayer. If I have the movie playing it takes 3-4 sec for GUI's to load where it is instantly loaded without those programs running.
Also MPlayer is very out of sync now voice lags by two seconds. I have tried forceidx but no help. DVPlayer sync perfectly, but still crackles.
I am also going to try the DVD in a regular player and see if it is the DVD.
Question my DVD player is Unit 2 Should (S)VCD be Unit 0? I have always used Unit 2, but Unit 0 works too.
Other problem with this version is of the GUI for MPlayer is that the sound stops completely after 10 seconds.

You shouldn't change PCI slots when you only have sound problems when using DVPlayer or MPlayer. The comment was meant for 'painter'.

performance through "window" playback, unless you change the following:
(1)While MPlayer is playing an A/V file in active window, hold down right mouse button.

(5)At this point, when you press the "f" key, you will get a fullscreen representation

point is the fact that many WMV9 will play in this version, albeit slowly.

I tried frame drop and that did the trick.

I have not had success with Samwel's advice the help file for Idetool is confusing for me. I am assuming that the DMA is OK and all set up. I got the machine from Justin Hemming of Livewire in Ottawa and took it back Christmas 2004 for the fix. I assume it was all taken care of then. It was Justin's personal machine. You can tell he really baby'd it. Seven fans!


But I am still getting the crackle only with the movie players.

Sorry, I forgot to "come back" to this thread after my question.
But it seems you got help from the author himself, no better source than
that really..

It was just as I thought, no DMA. The behaviour of your audio apps was similar
to before we got DMA enabled. That was why I suggested checking it.

But this is not quite correct.. The back connector for the front speakers should be
exactly the same as from the front, i.e. it goes to the same place in the hardware.

Also 5.1 is not enabled yet so the back connectors don't support anything else
than 2 channels (front speakers).

Maybe DaveAE could elaborate a bit on this matter?

Thanks again for all the help. I got to watch Howl'n Wolf and Sun House
live at Newport 1966. Worked beautifully in both DVPlayer and MPlayer.
