Yes but there are always system differences that get in the way. For example, a serial class for windows that I was using started to really crawl ( 0.5 seconds to send a 10 character string) once I switched to Visual Studio 2005 express. This was due to a difference in the way that Visual Studio handles BOOL -> bool conversions. After "porting" the class to VS2005, performance was back where is should be.
I'm guessing that Quake 3 is designed to work on almost all 3D hardware. However, if you're missing certain OpenGL features, or those features are slow on the target machine, then performance will drop. There will be other issues as well.
BTW, I have NOT looked at the source so I could be completely wrong.

Well Quake3 Arena works fine with Rogue´s compile. When starting Q3 Arena I notice an uncorrect display of the mirror effect when starting the first map. Maybe something is missing in minigl or drivers of my Radeon 9000Pro are buggy (?)
I can confirm that the
* Quake3 Missionpack (Quake3 Team Arena) * Urban Terror 3.7 (MOD) * trueFight (MOD) * quake rally (MOD) * Bid for Power 1.2 (MOD)
works as well
It performs good on my 933MHz G4 @ even 1600 x 1200.
Framerate @ 1024 x 768 vary between 30 and 45 fps

| I have not managed to make it work. I get either a DSI Error 800003 or a 800004 error or I get only a grey screen (even if I launch WarpView or GLQuake before, those two working perfectly).
I have an AmigaOne XE G3/800 with Radeon Saphire 9200SE (RV280). A pity since I love this game _________________ PowerMac G5 2,7Ghz - 2GB - Radeon 9650 - MorphOS 3.14 AmigaONE X1000, 2GB, Sapphire Radeon HD 7700 FPGA Replay + DB 68060 at 85Mhz |

A1-XE G4 @ 800Mhz 512Mb Radeon 7500 SBLive 5.1
I'm getting 18.9fps at 1024x768.
EDIT: This one is more respectable that I was expecting
At a resolution of 1280x1024 Colour Depth: 32 bit Lighting: Lightmap Geometric Detail: High Texture Detail: Max Texture Quality: 32 bit Texture Filter: Trilinier
With this, I'm getting 15.4 fps. Not a lot less that running at 1024x768 on a default detail level.

It's called Motion Sickness I suffer the same, but not on all the games. I can watch others play easily, but as soon as i'm in charge it begins, i can only stand it for a few minutes... |
G'day folks, apparently this is fairly common - I get the same thing, but like Raziel, only on certain games. For instance, I can play Soldier of Fortune 2 online for hours, but when trying the single player version, I get ill after only a couple of minutes, whereas Medal of Honor, and Quake 3 don't bother me much, or at all. Unlike Raziel though, if the game is one that makes me ill, it doesn't matter whether I'm actually playing it, or simply watching someone else play. One game that's REAL bad for this, is Far Cry..... a great game, and looks beautiful, but unfortunately it makes me ill REAL quick.
I didn't read that link of Raziel's yet, but I did some net searching on this before, and it's as stated, i.e. motion sickness. One article I read said it's the same thing as getting ill from reading while in a car, i.e. your brain detects movement, yet your eyes are focused on a static object, which conflict with each other and cause the illness. With many of these games, it's the same, except that your brain detects no movement, but your eyes are focused on lots of movement, once again sending conflicting signals.
Suffice it to say it all sucks, especially when there's a game you'd really like to play, but can't! |

If you set the variable cg_drawFPS "1" you can see you frames per second in realtime while you play the game. It is interesting to see in which situations the game (or A1/3D GFXboard) slows down.

It's not just you. Every single Quake game gives me motion sickness feelings after just a short while of playing.
On the other hand, I've played tons of other games like UT, UT2003, UT2004, Tribes 2, Tribes Vengence, Serious Sam FE & Serious Sam:SE plus numerous others for as long as 8 hours on end, and they never gave me that sick feeling. I'm convinced that it is something in the drawing method or algorithm that the Quake engines use. Don't know what else it could be, but then again, I'm sure someone will tell me.
Just thought you would like to know that you are not alone when it comes to motion sickness when playing Quake games.

i get over 50fps on 1280*1024 Fulldetail/effects if i put same detail/resolution my Amigaone (G4 933) i get only 3fps. radeon 7000

Well, that Radeon 7000 is not a good contender against much of anything, especially an 8500. I would be interested in the score of your A1 with that same Radeon 8500 in there so that it is much closer at least in the display capability. |

It's mostly about the vertex array implementation in MiniGL and the Radeon driver which is far from being optimal. _________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail |

| I tried it on my uA1 (Radeon 7k) and was plesantly surprised that it's perfectly playable, speed is 20-30fps in 640x480. When I change the texture detail to maximum, it goes all buggy (probably the textures don't fit in videomem and the game cannot handle such a situation). The texture detail just below maximum works well however and the graphics quality is good. In 800x600 it gets too slow, dropping down to around 15fps. It's pretty much the same as Q1 or Q2, anything above 640x480@16bit is too slow. I recommend enabling dithering in the radeon driver when using 16bit which makes it look much better.
Thanks for this quick port Thomas, even if speed is not optimal it's good enough for even the uA1 owners to have fun with. Although I'd rather see games like World of Warcraft on OS4 (dreaming, dreaming...), I would play this if AW.net had a Q3 server.
