So first quarter 2007 is soon over.
Speculation please, what do you think, what's it gonna be ? Disappointment ?
Can they keep the deadline ? Will SAM be available but with Linux only?
Are the rumours true that Amiga is unable to give a licence because of the
court case against Hyperion.

ok my Personal Opinion...

Well...history has shown us that none of the hardware solutions (after AmigaONE's) proposed to date have shipped at all. I keep an open mind for the SAM, though. I really hope that they can deliver.

But as you said, that depends on the Holy Grail of licenses...so far no company has secured an OS4 license other than Eyetech/Hyperion.

It will be an interesting end of Q1 and Q2...but unfortunately I don't have my hopes set too high.

They've published memory tests for the SAM board (as opposed to the refrence board that they started with) done in Linux, so we know that Linux is running on the board. They might actually be able to meet their Q1 release.

Still waiting for an announcement regarding licensing.

I actually don't think we will see Sam by the end of March. I was hoping it would be in stock at Amigakit with OS4 by then.

I actually think Dragon will come out by then - I won't be too disappointed as I am more and more interested in AROS and also rekindling my interest in 3.X. Don't forget we also have minimig and CloneA coming!

ACube seem like a fairly competent lot. I wouldn't be surprised if SAM goes on sale within the next few weeks, maybe even within Q1 as planned.

I don't think it will run OS4 though.

Now I'm not sure, but I think they only just started accepting applications for dev boards about a month ago..

I agree with jorkany that we may see Sams shipping without OS4.

I agree. There is no way that SAM ships by the end of this month with OS4. It's just not going to happen. I don't think anything will happen with OS4 anytime soon. Everyone got very quiet when it became clear that there was a legal problem between Amiga and Hyperion.

That said, I do think SAM will ship soon, but with Linux only.

It already runs on Phase 5 PowerUp cards and that PDA reference design based on the ppc 405.

The PDA we know is likely never to be released. The Phase 5 cards are already out there and the license for classic Amiga hardware is already written. Many people say that the classic license covers future PPC ad-ons for the classic Amiga.

I don't see how you can say this so positively about the licensing situation. As far as I know, this info hasn't been released. The only ones that know are Amiga and maybe Hyperion, and they aren't talking.

Last year Hyperion said they were working on a clone board but it didn't seem to be the SAM board. Haven't heard anything else about that. Haven't heard anything from any of the Hyperion people (like Rogue) since OS4 final was released. Lots of silence. Don't know that that means.

Keep in mind that, technically speaking, that announcement mentionned nothing about AOS4 availability for their board, so if, or possibly when, the end of the first quarter rolls around and we only see the board available, even possibly with Linux, but with no AOS4 license, then I'm sure some people, including ACube themselves, will be quick to say "but they/we said nothing about AOS4 in that time frame", and "it's out of their/our hands, but it's just around the corner any day now."

If this is what all that the Amiga trio (AInc., Hyperion, ACube) manages to pull out of the proverbial magic hat after well over two years of inuendos and unkept promisses, then this will be the last time I will listen to any such drivel and finally put my Amiga dreams, nostalgia and equipment to pasture, move on and never look back.

Bottom line is, I'm not expecting much, but I'm giving these folks one last benefit of the doubt before I bail.

I was initially encouraged by this in that I thought that this might have meant that they were busy working on new hardware platform(s) in anticipation that this would all finally be sorted out one way or another very soon and a license handed out to someone, but I'm not so sure anymore that this has panned out as they wished it would have or that it will in the timeframe they thought it might. They might have been, once again, too optimistic about how soon things would get resolved, or that they would get resolved favourably.

Hey, I just found out that one of my ex-managers at an old multinational firm I used to work for some seven years ago is now working for Apple, my career and finances will be taking an interesting turn in April and I'll be turning a new leaf, so it looks like April will be a month of changes for me, mostly good, but perhaps bad, in that it will include the dawn of a new Amiga, or might mean that I finally move on and get myself a Mac, which would be good, but also sad in many ways. On a personal sad note, April will also be when my father's put to pasture from his career - read "laid off at 60...without a golden parachute", so changes that are not so good in many other ways as well.

It seems most of us have no high hopes for anything
new running OS4 after Q1. I can only agree with you
that's what I think too.

Maybe it would be time for somebody to release a bit
of information soon, because it's not a secret anymore that
somethings not right. It would be very nice of somebody involved
to tell us where we are at.

If we are going to wait another year, why not tell us that now ?

I think EVERYTHING is on hold until the legal bickering is over. I just wish I knew more about all that because the silence makes it feel like another unnecessary and painful wait!

Is there so much going on in the court case that its going to be drawn out like the AMD vs Intel case (referring to time- not coverage obviously).

What more is there to figure out?
Why can't a decision be made?
What's hard about it that takes so much time?

Makes me think there is something else going on like copyright infringements such as mp3, jpg and the like. IF THAT is going on, we're screwed.
