@TheDaddy

It would be great to get a "full" list of software where we can for each section so that people know what software is available rather than what isnt and feel depressed.

Maybe someone could host this list somewhere once "complete" so that we can expand on it.

@Amiboy

I agree, but it looks like we are more or less covered in all departments. It's a matter of getting the party started again with the hardware+OS combination. Once that is out I am confident people will start producing more stuff.

At the beginning of this thread I thought the outcome was going to be pretty negative but I am very confident now.

All we need is (apart from love) the machines with the OS.

A list of available and work in progress software is a good idea. Isn't OS4depot that though?

@TheDaddy

Word Me Up XXL, as an AmigaOs 4.0 game, should be available soon.

See http://glames.online.fr for more details.

It might be a good idea to edit your first post so that it includes the relvent software for each section so most people dont hae to go and read all posts in the thread??

@TheDaddy

Add the following areas:
Scanner software

Webcam software

Instant Messengers:
- Epistula (with MSN plugin)
- Jabberwocky

It would be nice if I could use the scanner part of my multifunction printer. It registers the scanner as a separate function, so all I'm missing is a usbscanner device driver. I have FxScan, but its driver system requires Poseidon.

I might start writing a list and editing the first post once loads more people have read and suggested things, so we have an idea of all the available and work in progress software.

Once again, when we start to list software, we see that few essential things are missing. I think if hardware was available with its OS, it would motivate projects : Blender, OWB (browser), ...

For a personal status on my projects :
- Presentation / MS office support : PointRider (new version is planned before Christmas)
- Music : SongPlayer that won't be upgraded too much but I would like to build a new release with some enhancements and fixes
- Programming : I ported Ruby 1.8 and will spend more time on it only if I see people use it

@Amiboy

IMHO, the reason this list doesn't exist already, is because people would expect it to be "complete" first. That's not a very 21st century way to get it done.

There is already such a list started in at least 2 Wiki places (AmigaWiki software page and Wikipedia Amiga software page), so maybe if those answering in this thread could just update the information there. There is a pretty good chance that nobody but #6 will remember or search for the information in this thread later...

Neither of those two are OS4 specific, and I'd strongly hesitate to add unfinished software to that list. Creating a list here for now, is good enough.

@thread

If you're making a list, you might want to cross reference with this fairly recent thread:

Why so angry answer to TheDaddy ?!?

@all
I'm a little bit surprised that there's still a lot of people who don't know much about OS4. I was thinking to write something some time ago but I didn't. There's a thread where some MOS user wrote nice "marketing speech" about MorphOS. OS4 users took it like an attack. But I haven't seen anybody (user) writing nice "marketing speech" about OS4 (including myself . I think us OS4 users should share more of our experiences with other people.

@TheDaddy + all

- Audio/sound
Audio Evolution (professional music editing/recording/mixing)

-Internet security
OS4 ip stack Roadshow has all ports closed by default. If you are not installed and running any server softaware yourself this should be enough to be secure. And there's ip filter (Roadshow is based on BSD) in Roadshow which is a good firewall IMHO when configured right (it's very complicated). And there's example configuration on OS4 final CD.

People shouldn't compare Winblows and other platforms at all. Some people say that Winblows is unsecure because it has many Internet ports open by default and there's spy programs in OS made by M$ themselves. Other people have said W is unsecure because of ActiveX. Other platforms don't have ActiveX or anything else that's as open to attackers as ActiveX. So it's unsecure because it's an easy target not only because it's the biggest one on the market.

When Amiga was big thing and had a lot of virii back in 80's and early 90's it wasn't any problem to me. I didn't install and run any suspicious software. And if I used any suspicious software from floppies I turned off my external HD and powered my machine off after using such software for a couple of minutes to make sure RAM was totally empty. Winblows can somehow install and run virii automaticly without an user doing anything.

-CD
MakeCD

-Emulation
There's a lot of emulators on os4depot.net: here and here F.ex. Vice (Commodore machines)

-IRC
Wookiechat

-Security
fs_encrypt_plugin you can encrypt your HD partitions. I think OS4 is the most secure AmigaOS and the most secure Amiga API compatible OS (HD encryption and firewall "ip filter").

I think only program we are missing now is better web browser (CSS, better Javascript and some). I don't need any office sw myself. And I don't play much games.

@Amiboy

There is a database of compatible software for A1/OS4 at IntuitionBase, but don't know how up to date it is. Maybe this thread can be use to update it.
