I am encountering seemingly random IBrowse crashes when IBrowse starts up. If I 'kill' the program with GR I can run other things, but if I try to resize the IBrowse window the whole system locks up. If I do a warm/soft reset (logo, logo Ctrl) then IBrowse will run fine. I don't have much in my WBStartup just ScreenBlankerEngine, DepthToFront, AmiDock, Wet, AISS, DefIcons, AllKeys, RAWBinfo and AsyncWB.

Any Ideas? It's a non-fixed A1XE G4 using the built in IDE, ethernet and sound, 512M RAM, July OS4 Update.

Exactly the same sort of crash that I have been suffering for some years. You will probably find that the DAR (3EA in your case) is constant for the page on which it crashed. It only ever happens on the first page access of the session, so if you always open the same "Home Page", that DAR will always be 3EA for you. Change your Home Page and the value will change too.

I don't think the IB people can reproduce it.

Yea, that startup bug is annoying. I get it from time to time too. I have no default homepage though so I don't get the crash until I enter the first link. AmigaWorld or Google seem to not trigger the bug that often.

Why your system freezes is because the GrimReaper has remove IBrowse and its window structes. Therefore the Window is an orphane without a structure. So when you try to resize it (of even just activate it) Intuition will try to read into deallocated window structures and crash. And since Intuition crashes it obviously can't show the GrimReaper but the system freezes.

SUCH a short-coming!!!!
From what I believe, Hyperion won't do like Scout and remove windows too because some other task *might* use that window and than _it_ will crash. Well, how often does that happen compared to this situation when Intuition crashes instead!!!?? Stupid reasoning IMO. And to top it all, there is no Suspend button in the Reaper to keep everything stable either, or enable use of Scout.

But IB is also annoying that doesn't let another copy run when the first has crashes. And it does crash from time to time. We all know that....

Hack the binary and replace the MUIA_Application_SingleTask attribute (can't check its value atm) with some other effect-less one. That way, you'll be able to re-run it even if one instance is already crashed and frozen.

I have my homepage set to AmigaWorld (of course! ). Is there a 'safe' page that I can use for a homepage that won't crash?

No, it's got nothing to do with the page contents. But whatever is causing the problem is data-dependent, because the bad address that makes it crash is always the same for any given page. Make your Home page different and you'll get just as many crashes, but at a different address from the previous home page. They'll still all be the same address for that new page. Hope that doesn't sound self-contradictory.

I have "start with home page" turned off as well as the disk cache. I still get the odd startup GR. I'm convinced that Petunia v52.5 from Final is causing some problems with 68k programs, including IB. I don't recommend installing Petunia from ud4 as that has caused other problems for me. Progress is being made on IB, so this problem should go away, we just have to wait.

However, if I hack IB like you say, I probably won't be able to double-click on a html file and have it open in an already launched IB process. And if two IBs are started with the cache enabled, we are in trouble.

Any solution to this?

I use AWeb more often than IBrowse, but I use IBrowse for sites that give AWeb trouble. No crashes of IBrowse for a very long time. I am using IBrowse OEM-Version 2.4 as supplied with OS4 Final Update, default home page (about IBrowse document), cache in RAM disk.

If I recall correctly, changing the SetPatch command in Startup-Sequence helped, although the change was done to add some CHIPRAM for Cloanto Personal Paint V7.1.

I'm not getting a crash as such, but at startup on my Sam I'm getting an error requestor that says, "IBrowse Error The installed "Picture" image is too old." Any ideas why? This is from the same exact installation as I have on the A1 and I'm having no problems there.

Must be picture.datatype or something then? If you copied your installation from an AmigaOne to the Sam "exactly" as you say, there are probably inconsistencies between the newer Sam kernel and the rest of the older system from your A1.

About the startup bug: I once mentioned an experiment of how to avoid the startup bug. I seem to have succeeded pretty well. Two things are needed:
1. Do not use a start page.
2. Never let the URL gadget be active (show a cursor) when you click a hotlink or choose a bookmark to load.

Also don't assign IBrowse to load pages when double-clicked using OpenURL from other applications.

My guess is that the NewString gadget uses hooks which gets called when the gadget it deactivated and if this coinsides with the loading of a page something collides and can cause this crash.

The error message suggests something may be wrong with your images/Picture and images/Picture.info files in your IB drawer. In particular, the IMAGES tooltype needs to be set in the icon ("IMAGES=9" for IB2.4).

Maybe you already know this, or maybe it's not related, but still: IBrowse crashes here if I have more than one file in Devs/NetInterfaces. To fix this, make sure there's only the file with the connection you're using for Internet, nothing else.

Sorry, I was momentarily confused at first and thought you meant the IB .info file, but when I looked for the Picture.info file I noticed it wasn't there. It seems that none of the ftp clients copy over Amiga .info files so when I transfered my IBrowse dir from the A1 to Sam only the Picture file was copied over. After copying the Picture.info file from OS4's OEM version, IBrowse starts up perfectly with no errors, so thanks for your help in pointing me in the right direction.

The IBrowse crashes seem to be associated with the 68K emulation, as Fab suggested. We don't know the cause or which program is responsible. It might even be a MUI problem.

Frankly, I regard the list of suggested "fixes" as pure superstition, since no "fix" works for long before it doesn't "fix" it anymore.

On my system, there are sometimes long periods (months or more) when IB runs cleanly every start, then, with no obvious changes to the system, IB will start to crash again on every second start. If you have no "Home" page selected, it crashes on the first page fetch. Invariably, if it fetches the first page without crashing, you can be sure that it's going to continue to work OK after that.

The worst problem is that when it crashes, it takes down the network with it, so you have to reboot to be able to use the network again.

I shall repeat for the record that IBrowse never crashed, even during the period when everyone swore it crashed many many years ago.
I used serial dialup. That's your clue.

Another cause of the crashes was, without a doubt, the PPC flashplugin. We've proven that.

Another cause of the crashes is cache. I have mine disabled and use only memory for pages/images. Machine never crashes on exit..never as in "never".

As to my current upgrade to DSL, there is no doubt that once in a while it crashes on startup regardless of the fact that I have NO home page.
Both that and the IB network issue were addressed in the PPC version and reported to be issues of the past. Unfortunately, we don't have that version available to us.

Well that is consistent with the cache problem as I've already stated.
As the browser is used more and more, the cache fills until it becomes a problem.

There is absolutely nothing superstitous about that as others will confirm

The first thing I noticed is that you're not running the latest version of OS4, for example most of your libs are 52.x while the current OS4.1 update 2 uses mostly 53.x versions. It shouldn't have too much of an effect on IBrowse stability but lots of bugs have been fixed in the last 4 years since OS4.0.

Here IBrowse never crashes but I use the following settings:

I have disabled JIT emulation for the main IBrowse binary in Compatibility prefs. That makes the biggest difference, no more network task crash.
The impact on performance is small enough that I don't even notice it's not using the JIT optimizations. The libraries, datatypes, etc still use the JIT anyway.

My home page which is loaded on start is set to file://localhost/HOME: which is were I keep copies of all my websites, but it could point to RAM: instead of HOME: or even to file://localhost/ibrowse-hotlist.html, as long as it displays something without connecting to the network, that takes care of the crash on startup.

Javascript is off by default for any site not specifically allowed in URL prefs settings. I turn it on for a specific tab using the menu if really needed and hit the h then b key which takes me to the home page then back so that it runs the script(s) without reloading the page.

Finally, make sure IBrowse has a stack that's big enough. Here I set it to 256000
