| Hello.
I just tried to install Linux again. Since trying to create a bootable Debian Etch CD is going slow I though I would install a Woody base system and upgrade it. However I can't boot the CD anymore! It seems to boot okay, except for a VGA mode without logo, then gets stuck with a message that doesn't stop: Quote:
bogl: Can't open screen type 4 |
Why is it getting stuck and trying to bog all over my screen?
Oh BTW I have 2GB of RAM now, would that affect it? Yes, 2048MB. Last edited by Hypex on 19-Jul-2008 at 08:17 AM.

Most likely, use the UBoot-option to limit reported amount of RAM to Linux, and set it to "768- your gfx-ram".
BTW which ram is it?Last edited by tomazkid on 17-Jul-2008 at 05:19 AM.

Okay I give it a shot.
The RAM is 2x1GB Micron PC133 ECC REG SYNC Server SDRAM MT36LSDT12872G-133C2 133Mhz., CL3, Low profile, Double stack Chips
It doesn't look low profile with double chips stacked! |

Yes, the problem is for 99% the 2.4.x kernel that doesn't support highmem on the A1. _________________ A1SE: G3@600MHz, 2GB, 1GBit network card A1XE: G4@933MHz, 2GB, refitted AC'97 codec microA1: G3@800MHz, 1GB

Nor devices on the USB bus. Naa, that didn't fix it. I am thinking that maybe it can't handle my LCD monitor? |

Just to make sure there was no misunderstanding, it is 768 mb ram inclusive the gfx ram. So if you have a gfx-card with 128mb ram on in, it is 768 - 128 = 640 mb ram. So the amount of ram UBoot should report to Linux, should be set to 640 mb (or lower)in this example. Last edited by tomazkid on 17-Jul-2008 at 09:11 PM.

Okay, I wasn't aware of that. My gfx card has 128MB DDR, fastest ram on my A1! I tried 640MB, no change. Then I tried the LCD, 256MB, it worked! I tested 512MB and it was fine. Thanks.
Now to sort out my boot line...Last edited by Hypex on 18-Jul-2008 at 02:36 PM.

@Hypex and all I have almost the same problem, now! I have this a1g3se, I bought last june. Not much satisfied of AOS4.1.6, I decided to test Yellow Dog Linux 3. Since I have no original linux cd (my board came with nothing in bundle) I have downloaded and followed the instructions as are explained here http://movies.intuitionbase.com/YDL/teron-ydl3-install-manual.pdf I include here the pictures of what appears on screen. the installation stops for a problem of memory, I guess it's the same thing you were talking about in this thread. here are the pictures of the screen https://plus.google.com/photos/101122442993958461210/albums/5858836464813884689?authkey=CPX99bGngeunJw (don't bother with the magenta background, I like it better then black for uboot) I guess the amount of memory should be set in uboot preferences (mine should be 768-256=512MB, correct?) I have a1g3se, onboard usb disabled, onboard lan faulty, 40gb onboard IDE HD master, DVDRW onboard IDE slave, SII3112 connected but empty, RTL3189 lan, Muse 5.1 sound card, Radeon 9200 256MB DDR video card, ram is 1GB Samsung M390S2858CT1-C7AQ0 HP 127008-041 PC133 168-P ECC Registered Memory sorry to bother thanxLast edited by satiropan on 24-Mar-2013 at 09:45 AM. | Today I setted ram limit to 512MB and the installation begun and arrived to end. It was in text mode, not in graphic mode but it's ok then I setted uboot like it's written in the ydl3 install instructions
] setenv bootargs root=/dev/hda3 l2cr=0x80000000 ] setenv bootcmd “diskboot 1000000 0:1; bootm” ] saveenv
then reset and the system tries to boot but stops with this message
verifying checksum.....bad data crc
what does it mean? what can I do? I have a doubt that maybe I should state diskboot as 0:3 ? since ydl is on third partition, as stated in bootargs? (I did the automatic partitioning) thanx

Yellow Dog Linux 3 is not only very very old, but comes with a kernel version that I strongly advise not to use anymore (because of missing DMA workaround, outdated hardware support and a lot of other things).

Yes, but this problem is solved in all 2.6+ kernel versions, where you can make use of the full 1GB of memory installed in your A1SE.

You have an A1SE board with this special GAL fix, right? So even this does not fix the onboard ethernet?

I guess YDL sets up a PReP partition for the kernel image, which seems to be the first partition on the disk (hence the 0:1).
"Bad data CRC" means that the loaded uImage is somehow corrupt and thus failed the CRC check. I would try to write the image again to the PReP partition.
BTW: I would give a newer Linux version a try. Hypex adapted the Debian Squeeze installer for the AmigaOne in a great effort, see here.
I also have Debian Squeeze running on my A1SE, as you can see here._________________ A1SE: G3@600MHz, 2GB, 1GBit network card A1XE: G4@933MHz, 2GB, refitted AC'97 codec microA1: G3@800MHz, 1GB

thank you very much I will give a try to Hypex installer. I am downloading it now. for the onboard lan, it was never seen by uboot since the beginning, then one day I pressed the 3com chip with a screw driver and it worked!! so I planned to do a reflow, bought a hot air station and tried. in the end uboot saw the 3com chip but it was not working anyway, even pressing on it then it didn't recognize it anymore. so I put a rtl3189 and problem was solved, pity is that I have only 3 PCI slots, so, 1 for the muse 5.1, one for the rtl3189, one for the sii3112 sata, then where do I put the nec usb card (onbord usb always disabled)? so I looked for a usb to lan adapter with the adm8511 chip. I found it, took off the rtl and put the usb nec and managed to go on line, but every time, after minutes or half hours, it freezes. some time grim reaper opens up and always says there's a problem with the ohci driver. so I tested all the ohci drivers available but the problem remains thats mainly why I want to test linux. but where do I find the squeeze distro to download? the link in the page you said doesn't work

I use a Intel 1GBit network card (it's a 3.3V compatible card) in the PCI slot on bus 1 under Linux. I also tried a NEC USB2.0 card in the free PCI slot in bus 0 (I have a sil3114 and a soundcard on this bus, too), but it fails under high I/O load (for example copying data from an USB2.0 stick to the harddisk). Unfortunately this USB2.0 card isn't 3.3V compatible so I can't test it on PCI bus 1.

Well, that would confirm that USB is a no-go on the A1SE. You could try to put the USB 2.0 card or the rtl8139 card in the PCI slot on bus 1, if these are 3.3V compatible cards (otherwise you will destroy some precious hardware). I don't know however, if OS4 recognizes the cards then.

Yes! You need either the debian-6.0.7-powerpc-CD-1.iso or the debian-6.0.7-powerpc-xfce+lxde-CD-1.iso image. I installed GNOME on my A1SE, but it feels a little bit sluggish. Therefore XFCE or LXDE may be the better alternative for this machine.
BTW : Installing Linux on the A1SE isn't that easy. At the moment the system isn't made bootable automatically, so you have to do this manually before you reboot the installer. It may be better to keep the PReP boot method for know (as you are already using it with YDL), as the slb_v2 seems to have problems to recognize newer ext2/3 partitions.
Let me know, if you run into problem! I'm sure there will be some... _________________ A1SE: G3@600MHz, 2GB, 1GBit network card A1XE: G4@933MHz, 2GB, refitted AC'97 codec microA1: G3@800MHz, 1GB

Yes, it does, all about PRep-partitions back then. One thing with the YDL is that it won't do RDB, hence not compatible with AmigaOS._________________ Site admins are people too..pooff! |
