Hi All,

I have my SAm with OS 4.1 (with quick fix) up and running fine, but I can not seem to get the ehternet going at all.

I am trying to connect it to my ethernet network at home where several other machines are operating. I tried the wizard and manual connections...both fail saying that it either "doesnt need the dialer" and that I should edit it. OR ...it just says the interface is not available/recognized.

I try and manually install it ...and it does not even offer me the opportunity to select "ethernet". It only has selections for "dail up" or "PPoE" --which obviously dont work.

When I ask it to check the connection, the SAM ether0 connector passes w/o problems. At other times, it will say it doesnt have a modem connected (even though I selected the SAM ethernet device!).

Does anyone have a bone-headed (for me) description of how to get just a routine ethernet connection working on OS 4.1? (This is w/o passwords or dial ups....basically just connect and go as with my other networked computers)

I think I was having the same kind issue just a few days ago. Bare with me I just got my SAM440EP on monday. The first thing I did was use the "os4.1:Internet/New Connection" to set up the connection for the ehternet to be set to "PPC440EP_eth.device" "Unit 0". When it tried to start up the connection after the wizard installer closed it failed on me too here. Then I went to "OS4.1:Prefs/Internet". In that program listed was my ethernet controller PPC440EP_ETH.device. I double clicked on the device and another window opend with more information about the device and DHCP , etc. I then clicked "USE" and then I clicked on "SAVE". When I did that a CLI output window opended and stopped the connection then it started the connection up again. After 2 or 3 seconds got a DHCP address from my routher and I was connected to my network and the Internet. Also you may want to check that you have the "ppc440ep_eth.device" file in your "os4.1:devs/networks". I dont know if the device name is different on other sam models. I hope the problem I was having will be helpful to you.

You should take a look at the AmigaOS 4.1 Installation Guide on Sam's board I have written where I talk about Internet connection on these boards via a modem/router.

As Faranheit says, read his pdf, it tells you all you need to know.

You ARE using the right-hand Ethernet connector, aren't you? That is, the connector furthest away from all the others.

Hey, that guide looks really good! Even though you say in the beginning "for SAM440ep or SAMflex" but the screenshots (at least the internet ones, didn't look at the others) were actually taken on a Peg2

Maybe you should/could send that doc to Ryu for publishing at intuitionbase.com? The site contains already a lot of usefull information, unfortunately it seems to be outdated a lot so new information would be always good.

I guess setting-up ethernet on Sam can be a bit fiddly, because it confusingly had TWO ethernet ports. Worse, I found that I cannot configure both to work, so you have to trial & error to find out which is "port 0" & "port 1".

IIRC, port 0 is at the end of the board (furthest from everything else).

Also, you may need to reboot for DHCP to work (it shouldn't be necessary but sometimes is after changing the config).

I can confirm that! Internet connection on the SAM is one of the things that can give you a headache.

ChrisH with all due respect, why do you keep posting negativity? Everysingle post Ive seen you do over the last week has been nothing but negative. Allways whining about something that is not right or it should be this way - have a chill pill or a beer on me will ya? please it would be nice to see some happy posts! lol!

What you see as negative, I see as *constructive criticism*. I never post something negative, without any desire for it to be helpful in some way or other. (I do not post negatives "just for the sake of it" or to be nasty, because that has no interest for me.)

I own & like a Sam440, and in this particular thread I pointed out that yes it can be a bit tricky to set-up internet, and here is how you solve it. I really don't see any problem with that

Or are you saying we should sweep problems under the carpet, and never discuss them. Skeletons in the closet? I believe in being open, even if the truth may be unpleasant. Otherwise we cannot solve those problems.

The screenshots for the Sam's guide have only been done on a Sam440ITX, not at all on a Pegasos 2 since I have received AOS4.1 on my Pegasos 2 longer after releasing this guide.

The Internet wizard has undergone some changes for the next update, so hopefully you should find it easier to setup a bare connection once it is out.

Interesting - I found setting up my SAM one of the easiest setups for network I ever did. Maybe it was easier for me, 'cos I have an already working home network with some Amigas, SUNs and Windows systems all running through an ADSL/Router combo. (Using static IPs btw - except for AirNet - ahem - WiFi).

OK, spoke too soon.

I followed the guide and entered in my routers IP address as a host and as the default route. I get through all the configuration and then it tries to connect, ultimately failing to do anything and "timing out".

It's clearing trying to do something, but gets "lost".

I have been trying to do this in both auto and manual modes with the same result. I have a feeling this is something really simple that I am missing.

When I try and run IBrowse, it says that it can not find the "DNS name/route".

Ideas?

Did you set the DNS in Name Resolution area of Internet
Preferences ?

I think this is the section I am having the most confusion with.

I entered in my server address here (192.168.1.1). This is how I have all the other computers on the network together.

I also entered in "comcast.net" the the i-net company I subscribe too.

I have also tried adding the direct router address (192.168.1.0).

And, I have left it all blank or gone with the "automatic config" option.

In all cases, the CLI window will open. Then it will close all connections followed bu io trying to "open XXX interface"

After a long pause, it says the adapter has "timed out" and the window closes.

I also tried the wireless card from AMIkit and it too does the exact same thing. This kind of suggests that it is some sort of settings issue I have wrong here.

None of the other (non-amiga) computers on my network need anything but DHCP (so I never have entered in a DNS address). Sorting this out is getting extremely frustrating.

oh, the DNS message comes up together with it saying that it cant find the right "host".

In my "host" section, I only have the local host (127.0.0.1) and my server 192.168.1.1

Should something else be in there?

try using a google search on one of your machines that does connect to the internet to find your dns server address.

eg serch for dns.myprovider where .myprovider is the internet provider.
once you find it then enter it in the DNS section of the prefs.

Are you sure using the right ethernet port ?

You must use the most outside ethernet port for AmigaOS 4.x.

In you case (apparently), just check the DHCP box in the 'Interfaces' section (with the 'modify' button) and give a name to your Sam ('GothSam' for example) and be sure using the 'ppp440ep_eth.device' driver.

After that, in the 'routes' section, just type '192.168.1.1' in the 'default gateway address' box (don't forget to type on 'enter' key to validate it).

In the 'hosts' section, you don't have to type anything for Internet access, this section is used for ANR or for declaring other computers from your LAN (their ip address and names).

In the 'name resolution' section, just verify that the default gateway is here, in your case : you must just have one line with the following IP : 192.168.1.1

Nothing else has to be modified.

This settings should be good for connecting Internet over a modem / router.

Really? Strange as in the screenshots on page 10 "via-rhine" is mentioned, which is the 100Mbit chip on the Peg2 ... the other shots mention ppc440ep_eth though..


Anyway, still a very good guide, which should make it to intuitionbase.. just the formatting isn't optimal yet ;)

IntuitionBase should in general get update to cover all OS4 hardware and not just the A1..
