If I wanted to run some OS4 specific programs on my os3.9 with warpup would it be possible with some kind of emulation library? (I bought OS4 classic)

@Ancalimon

There is no technical limitation but it would be very slow because all OS4 API calls must be dispatched for the 68k.

I'd like to see it done by some professional. Speed is not that important in my opinion if you want to run simple programs.

Now when I think again about it I dont think it is possible after all. You can not maintain cache coherency between 68k and PPC applications. Maybe if you disabled caches it could work, almost

I think it's easier to get a native WarpOS version of your app done. What programs would you like for WarpOS?

@Crumb

Not many programs in particular, but featues of AmigaOS.
For example Epistula would be nice to have.

@Ancalimon

Why ?

You speak of WarpUp, I guess you have PPC board, right ?
Why not run OS4 classic directly on it ?

Or did I misunderstood ?

@Ancalimon

Why not just request OS3 port of those programs?

@Ancalimon

Since you have a PPC card, buy OS 4.x Classic
amd boot to it. If ypu have 128MB.

Since you have AGA chipset, you should have nice OS 3.x
compatibility

If you have PPC, and you bought OS4 Classic, why not just run OS4?

Sad to hear that. Perhaps you could give some info to Jahc about avatar code.

How about releasing source code ?

@Crumb, hotrod & samo79

Well, when I started Epistula it was for the sole intention of releasing it for the then new AmigaOS 4, and hopefully be included on the official CD as either a system component or at least a contribution.

For that to happen I needed to be an OS4 betatester which after initial discussions I was granted the priviledge of by the then people at the top; mainly to be given access to the system components before they were officially released so I could have it ready for the inclusion of previously mentioned CD.

Indeed, this was achieved and it was there, present on the official OS4 CD in a special OS4 edition that didn't time out; a thank you to the OS4 team for allowing me to work in this manner. This was a major coup for me and I am proud of that achievement still today!

Of course, as the OS progressed I wanted to progress Epistula too. You all know the story of the problems people were having and my big decision to completely re-write it for OS4.1 so I'll leave that out of this story.

Now, because of other events in my life at that point in time, such as picking myself up after being made redundant, starting my own business, fixing my A1 (yet again!!) I didn't have a lot of spare time to dedicate to finishing the re-write (which is about 75% done) and/or doing much betatesting, I have been inexplicably kicked off the team via a very poorly worded and addressed e-mail from the new betatesting coordinator, who in my humble opinion, as well as being incredibly egotistical also has a huge chip on his shoulder about a great many things!

Of course, one might argue that I hadn't done much betatesting recently, or in fact at all during my tenure, but if I refer to my initial discussion emails this wasn't my reason for being accepted onto the team. I was mearly one of quite a few developers who are, or were, there purely to develop software for the new operating system so it's ready for any major releases. This included having access to the developers of each system component and the advanced knowledge available from some of the more senior developers of the system; which all-in-all worked very well for the 4 years I was a member of the team.

But like I've said, this all came to an end when I was removed without consultation or questioning by the afore mentioned coordinator, by what I can only describe as a very short, wrongly addressed and very poorly worded email. The fact that there are other people still on there who are, like I was, solely developers or even the handfull of people on there, who as far as I could tell, did nothing but have the advantage of personally knowing each other speaks volumes and enforces the saying "it's not what you know, but who you know".

So, some may think I'm whinging or taking it badly and running down certain people, I'm not, life goes on and you deal with it but the top and bottom of it is, apart from no interest in IM anymore, I know longer have an interest in developing software for OS4.x for anyone but myself. I too await the new update for OS4.1 so I can tinker with my own projects in my own time but that's as far as it goes for me now.

As for releasing the source code, I'm afraid that is out of the question as it's not something I'm fond of doing and besides, SabreMSN looks like it's working pretty well without any of my input; jahc has done a great job.

You may or may not see any software from me in 2010; I will be working on something in my spare time, I still absolutely love programming the AmigaOS, but I doubt it will ever see the light of day within the community.

Sorry for the long winded explanation, but that's the way things are today.

Happy New Year everyone!

Interesting idea but I don't think this would slow it down much as all, since AmigaOS would already be running native on the 68k. And it runs okay on that.

It would be like running WarpOS programs. With OS4 calls fallbacked to OS3. Infact OS4Emu would be doing what is needed here. But calling AmigaOS instead of OS4. Would need to run from a WarpOS app I'd say.
