@tomazkid

Thomas F has already requested on this forum that his home details are not regularly printed. I think this should be acknowledged.

To get them from whois, requires people to actually search...

And to find it here does not??

Quite frankly, if you are in a public company in a civilized country, you should expect that some details like email, phone, etcetera be public.

Now, if you don't want your private email, or phone to show with this company, you give contact info that goes through the company itself.
So when you answer the work phone, you are at work so to say.

Even though a moderator has obfuscated the email addresses, I still recommend that you remove them. It's bad practise to post other people's email addresses in forums. Yes, you could argue that it's publicly available, but it's a darn sight less accessible in a whois database than here. Domainsbyproxy.com is not a viable option for a commercial website, nor is lying to the domain registry.

Well, if they want their phone numbers not to be shown, they should address it at whois, not here.

I see the information from whois as a quote taken from whois.

The information at whois cannot be removed because it is required by law. My email address is on my website so it's public, but I certainly don't want it to be republished here obfuscated or not (it's trivial to write a bot that understands "-at-"). Moreover, like I said, this information is only available on whois if you're specifically looking for it. It's much less accessible than it is here.

As a general rule, don't publish someone else's contact/personal details publicly without their permission, even if it's available on their website, whois, the white pages, or anywhere else.

I agree...even though it's public information I think it doesn't make it "right" to publish someone's personal information on a forum like this.

If it were my info I would object to it.

If someone wants to actively go look it up, that is fine, but publishing it on a forum like this is, in my opinion, wrong.

Well, compare with this:

Click here for everything about the a-eon domain, names, phone numbers, emails.

Can't really see the point of forbidding quotes to forum (saves bandwidth), or making a link like that above.

one thing that could make a difference though, search engines.
Whois searches are not found via Goole, Baidu and such, are they?

No, here it does not. It's one link away (from the front page right now), visible to anyone who reads this thread, and very visible to bots. It's visible to all sorts of weird people who otherwise wouldn't see it. Contrast that with whois, where you have to do a lookup on a specific domain. This is the difference between someone's name and address being in the white pages, and it being posted on the front page of a newspaper (both the online and offline versions).

Maybe they have to provide that info to them for some reason.

I find it deplorable to have people's addresses and phone numbers listed on a public forum. It is crass and an invasion of privacy.

As you say the info is already available on whois so why repeat it here on a site any computer illiterate moron can easily read ?

Well, in a day or so, a-eon's whois entry probably will be searchable on Google thanks to you posting a direct link here. Otherwise it wouldn't have been.

You can argue whether or not posting it here makes a difference, but it's still not a nice thing to do.

@Tomazkid

The fact that T Frieden has asked in this forum for his details not to be published SHOULD be respected. Can a moderator not get in involved...

Hmm there is one here already....

edit;

can a sensible moderator get involved...

No, but you should at least have the wit not to publish personal information on a public forum.

Well, I did not post the info, I even removed it now, since as Hans wrote, we are infested by search-bots here in forums.
As a moderator there is a balance, between Censorship versus Freedom of Speech and public interest, not easy to maintain.

This was public company information.
Make it a company phone number, and company e-mail, if you don't want to use your private ones.

This is not personal info. This is company's info. I don't really get this paranoia. And Aeon webmaster could just mask this info. If he didn't do it he must be OK with it. Google will index it anyhow, there's a millions sites on the Internet that will query this domain, pull some stats, put some random links to it (lame SEO bots).

If you don't want information public DON'T put them on the Internet. We have that medium for few years now and people, in IT!, still didn't learn that? Or pay a $0.99 for whois entry masking.

Law requires you to put some details out there for people to see. You can query some public records and get my company's address, phone, Tax ID, Statistical ID.

And what would "crazy people" (that was somehow unable to use search engine to find info on people who they want to stab in a face with a rusty knife) do with this data? Spam them? We have pretty robust spam filters. Write an e-mail filled with F, C and D? Call them and moan while rubbing one?

This "remove this form forum" sounds almost like "take off your shoes before boarding a plane, and throw your liquids away". It's security that does not secure anything.

I have set up some domains via GoDaddy and via their"domainsbyproxy" service. None of my contact info is visible to the outside world.

Try finding my contact info.

So, what you're saying is: competent people can hide whois information if they find it too personal?

So anyway, back on thread. I've now got access to Thomas F's contact details (not that I asked for them ) but as far as I'm concerned the Frieden brothers are software guys and contractors for Hyperion! Who are the hardware guys and what is their history in the computer industry? What is their relationship to Hyperion? Have Hyperion spun off a hardware wing or has Thomas Frieden gone it alone?
