| With the advent of the sixth update for AmigaOS 4.1, Hyperion Entertainment introduced - for the first time ever in the history of AmigaOS - an official update system for distribution of future features, fixes and other changes to Amiga computers all over the world. Although the introduction of a proper update system can be regarded as a milestone in the evolution of AmigaOS, the actual name for the system - "AmiUpdate" - is open for debate. In this AmigaWorld.net Saturday Poll, you are kindly asked to share your view on this topic. What is your opinion about the word? Should the first action of the AmiUpdate system be to change its own name to "Update", marking its now official operating system status (acknowledging the author in the process)? Is re-branding existing software components to follow the "Ami"-prefix scheme a better idea, allowing for names such as "AmiNotepad", "AmiRanger", "AmiGrimReaper", "AmiPython" and "AmiRinghioServer"? As always, constructive criticism adds atmosphere to the AmigaWorld.net forum. _________________ That'll Put Marzipan In Your Pie Plate, Bingo 💻 Pro-Amiga, 🌍 Pro-Globalism, 🍅 Pro-Vegan, 🛦 Pro-NATO & 🇪🇺 Pro-Joint EU Defense Intervention Initiative |

Rebranding is pointless by default. Even pidgin should have had the option to keep its original name. _________________ : AmigaOneXE (unmod.) 750FX/512 MB +stuff & AmigaOS 4.(0|1) : A1200/68060&96MB/SCSI/EM1200-Voodoo3 & OS 3.5 : A500/1MB : Pegasos (ff) 512 MB & MorphOS Praise seitan. |

in my opinion it does not make sense to put "Ami" on all Software which is included in the OS. It was the right decision to rename the AmiUptate to Uptade in the OS.
Perhaps it is good for extern Projects, maybe things also exists on other platforms or Amiga releated things to give it a name to bring the connection to the Amiga (AmiCygnix, AmiBoing)
I know that i use AmigaOS, i don´t Need "AmiCalculator, AmiNotepad, AmiShell..."
Also "AmiRinghioServer".. what the hell ... ;) it is good that this Thing now is "Notification", if any coder who works on the os put names as he want or every little Software has "Ami" in it, it would confusing me.

To me bunging "Ami" at the start of everything kinda gives things a cheap sounding public domain type of title, almost like no one could come up with an original name or heck even just leave the name for something as it should be ie: Notepad, Ranger etc…
It's a bit like Apple with there "i" this and "i" that nonsense, it's actually quite annoying and it's not as if you're going to install "Notepad" for another system on your Amiga by mistake just cos it hasn't got "Ami" in front of it…
Leave the silly "branding" out of things and stick with titles that simply says what the product is/ does... _________________

Decision you say? Not one that I agree with and as far as I can tell not one that was made. It's still Amiupdate everywhere. _________________ : AmigaOneXE (unmod.) 750FX/512 MB +stuff & AmigaOS 4.(0|1) : A1200/68060&96MB/SCSI/EM1200-Voodoo3 & OS 3.5 : A500/1MB : Pegasos (ff) 512 MB & MorphOS Praise seitan. |

| @Petah Where is the poll option for "I don't care, it's just a name"?
Not to mention the option "The "Ami"-prefix makes sense for certain software (now debate which)"? Last edited by ChrisH on 01-Dec-2012 at 12:05 PM. Last edited by ChrisH on 01-Dec-2012 at 12:04 PM.

| I have no problem with the name ami in amiupdate but ofcourse not every app should have ami in its name. It would be as boring as using an "i" in all apple stuff. |

Gaim was renamed to Pidgin because they got sued by AOL over the name so no, they did not have the option to keep the original name.

Yes, hence my careful wording. _________________ : AmigaOneXE (unmod.) 750FX/512 MB +stuff & AmigaOS 4.(0|1) : A1200/68060&96MB/SCSI/EM1200-Voodoo3 & OS 3.5 : A500/1MB : Pegasos (ff) 512 MB & MorphOS Praise seitan. |

So you were essentially just saying that if you had a say in the matter you would have allowed Gaim to keep it's name?
I don't see what the point of saying stuff like this is though, when the reality is not like this at all thanks to trademark laws.
Also since Pidgin supports more than just the AIM protocol maybe changing the name wasn't such a bad thing after all. Last edited by salass00 on 01-Dec-2012 at 03:21 PM. Last edited by salass00 on 01-Dec-2012 at 03:20 PM.

Not sure where the "controversy" is with this?
I guess the Ami prefix should be dropped though if AmiUpdate is going to be included with the OS in future as it serves no purpose.
The important things are that the thing works well, is secure and does what is intended. _________________ gtmooya's blog |

Yes indeed.
From now on sketchblock must be refered to a
aMiSketchingBlockingThingyThatsonlyformyMiggynotyourPC (please ensure you use the right capitalisation)
Well that's cleary a joke (just incase some takes me seriously ! )
but more seriously somtimes adding a 'Ami' 'A' 'Amiga' prefix makes prgrams easier to find in google etc.
Imagine searching google for 'Update' , there going to be a lot of noise.
Ultimatly it matters not, it's neither professional nor unprofessional, it's just a name
PS the A in AOrganiser stand for Andy not Amiga ....

i-apple software is for me "best software for Apple". For Amiga we often naming any software in this way. I postulate independent committee who will be able add or remove "ami" from software name, even if this can affect my software production... Ami should be only added only for best Amiga software. |

Adding Ami to 'everything' is just plain stupid.
AmiUpdate makes sense as it updates your AMI-ga, and maybe AmigaUpdate is a bit long winded.
Just calling it Update is not descriptive enough, many install scripts can be called Update-xxx.
IMHO the current title describes exactly what it does, no need to change it and certainly no need to add the Ami prefix to other things without a damned good reason.
