I am wondering if anyone can help me with configuring lpr.device on Amiga os 4.1 to my network printer which is a HP laserjet 2600n. My Amigaone 500 doesn't recognise it under USB.device either using postscript or using some of the 2000 series HP drivers. I have downloaded lpr.device and created a new config file as per the Instructions but still no luck with printing
Does anyone have the same printer or similar and mind sharing some step by step instructions to set it up correctly?? 😊
Printer Prefs 1) Copy a HP Laserjet printer driver from Storage/Printers to Devs/Printers (Im using the HP_LaserJet_1100 as it gave the best quality with text and b/w prints, you might want to try out a few drivers to find the one best matching your printer. Possible drivers are HP_LaserJet_2000 and HP_LaserJet_2100. There is a general HP_LaserJet printer, but it seems to miss some features, at least for my printer) 2) Choose your printer driver in the prefs 3) Check "Always Init Printer" 4) Choose "netprinter.device" as "Port.device" 5) Save
Probably reboot once
NetPrinter Prefs 1) Enter the hostname/ip address of your printer Thats the address you should be able to surf to in a browser (and access the printers web page/settings page) 2) Either choose "Direct" or "LPR" I found that direct printing works better than lpr (for unknown reasons)...unfortunately sometimes it still prints garbage and/or crashes (but far less than with the even older lpr.device) 3) Set the "Port" to 9100 (RAW Printing - your printer should take care of the rest)
If you chose "lpr" you need to give some spooler data for the program to work (But as said above i wasn't able to make it work crash free, no matter what kind of spooling i chose, it's seems to be very picky about something in my system)
If you got it to print you can set every other program to "Workbench" printer (i.e. AmiPDF) and it will work aswell
edit: fixed the url and spelling

Cheers fella for the detailed response and apologies for not replying back sooner..... had a stab at your instructions last night and still no joy..... I tried one of the generic HP drivers and tried to print something from AmiPDF and the best I got was ghostscript error of some sort so to me it suggests that the printer driver is not supported in AmigaOS..... frustrating but ill have a further play around today...
With all the settings in place test your printer by sending a simple Hello to PRT:
echo "Hello" >PRT:
from a shell...if that works, Notepad and Multiview test printing should also work. Then you can go on testing graphics and PDF
btw: The ghostscript crash means that it might be too long of the printer to answer.
You can try setting the GS start timeout a little higher in AmiPDF/Settings/Printer (Mine is set to 180, but maybe your printer needs more time to fire up?)
PS: Ghostscript is seriously flawed when it comes to error managment
