Just a few things can keep the mancave quiet:

- Using an SSD / CF or SD to IDE instead of a mechanical hard drive.

- Using a noclick app for floppy drives (or using a gotek type device - I prefer using real floppies). My 2 external drives have anticlick on them as standard (Amitek).

- I run a Blizzard 1230 MKIV so no fan required (don't overclock and you won't need a fan on any M68K CPU - underclocking like I do from 50 down to 33MHz makes the system cooler still and gives me all the horsepower I require (a ram card would be enough if it wasn't for the >4MB PCMCIA issue).

- My PSU is an ATX with a converter to Amiga. I use the Corsair RM550X which may look overkill but at half load or less the fan isn't required (at 25 degrees C ambient temp). So unless we have a heatwave there is zero noise from a PSU that could provide 10 Amigas with enough power.

@A1200

Nice! My A1200 has old (still original) 540 MB HDD - louder with every year... On the other hand my 486SX laptop can stop HDD and is fanless, truly silent companion (with broken display ).

@A1200

The best mig is a silent one like you say. I use mine for music so I suppose I'm biased but growing up with a silent A500 sort of set the stage. I prefer to use my 030 over my noisy fan cooled 040 for the reasons you mention.

@A1200

I actually have never minded either the sound of the 2.5" or the click. On a typical day like today the noise levels can be pretty high. I have the GVP side car on the 500 which gives out a gentle whirr. The A4000D under the desk is reasonably quiet. The A4000d above is definitely noisy, though pleasantly so. The A1200 next to this has external SCSI drives plus CD and that makes a rocket engine noise on boot but soon quietens down. The A1200 games machine has just the 2.5" and is whisper silent anyway and I don't mind the click. My beloved A1200 that completes the circle in the workshop has the SCSI Kit on the Blizzard and external drives, CD and ZIP and when I fire them up one at a time its like an aircraft preparing for take off. The Microvitec even clicks as it goes through the mount file for the endless list of drives. But when all going its like music to my ears.

Upstairs in the study I have the A4000D which steadily starts to get a heavy pulsating beat from the PSU. The A1200 tower that sits next to this is reasonably quiet. Just the click and a gentle whirr.

In the next room I currently have an A600 which with hard drive is not loud in truth and neither is the Amiga 1200 that sits to her side. Can't hear them generally. However the A590 that runs with the 500 3.1ROM is a beast and likes to make the most noise. I don't complain. The two C128 d's are quiet as they get used rarely. The Playstation 2 and 3 make some noise but not much. The C64 on the 1701 is I guess the quietest until I fire up the external floppy drives. Still very quiet.

Add to all that the Windows 7, three XP, three Windows98 and a Windows 95 plus my 2000s sitting in the layby bench and trust me when all up and running like today you hardly notice the clicking on the humble A1200s. But then I've never been one for having just one computer. Especially as I'm listening to New Order on the wireless headphones. I should be so lucky..... Anyway back to Arcade Snooker and SimCity512K.. man is that game addictive.

Incredible! May i ask what you generally use the Amigas for. Broadly speaking are most of the computers collected for preservation purposes or active use everyday.

Q!
