With the official announcement today from A-EON that the A1222+ production run is now underway, potential owners might be interested in how well it works, what performance is like, what quirks to know, and so forth. I've put together a QuickStart Guide to answer all of those questions as well as provide a full reference point on compatibility issues. If you're interested in the A1222, please check out my new guide!

I pass on the A1222

This does mean that if you want to do things like 3D rendering or first-person shooter games the A1222 is probably not for you.

Next gen Amiga is meant to be going forwards not backwards. Commodore messed up by not making the Amiga capable of chunky gfx and now it looks like this model is going to suffer the same fate.

@TrevorDick

Good afternoon!

I have been trying to get an answer on what the pricing is going to be on the Early Adopter boards?
So far all I have gotten is crickets so I am asking you.

Will the agreed upon pricing that was published of $450 USD be honored?
We all realize that things have changed and the price may be somewhat highere but we are hearing prices in the area of $1200 for the board.

Higher is one thing, but 3 TIMES higher will kill this project for good as no one will accept that.
Please advise

Give them a break and be happy it is being released.

It is such a low-volume product that it was unlikely to ever be very cheap. The size of the market is probably significantly smaller now than when the initial price-guides were made.

More costly, but at least if you want to add a Radeon RX card: they are more affordable:)

Thanks for guide!

Unusable for 3D games? That is really bad for so costly board.

@V8

Right..

So you are OK with paying nearly the same amount for this board as an X5000 board that is FAR FASTER and more capable?

The size of the market has not changed until the price tripled, THEN the size of the market dropped for sure!

The ONLY reason I jumped on the AAA bandwagon was the (relatively speaking) fairly reasonable price that was being offered, so you go ahead and pay 3 times as much for less than half the board.

Knock yourself out.

But I can tell you there will be VERY FEW that will accept that kind of price hike no matter what the cause

And still waiting for a reply from @trevordick on this...

@thread

Per a reader's request I've added a new Tips and Tricks section to my A1222 Guide. I hope folks find it useful. The Guide now includes the following sections:

1. Introduction
2. System Build
3. Disk Options
4. Recommended Software
5. Comprehensive Applications Compatibility List
6. Comprehensive Games Compatibility List
7. Tips and Tricks
8. Benchmarks and Performance
9. Online Resources

Enjoy, and thanks for the feedback!

@eliyahu

Did you test all 3 executables for Cinema 4D?

@Rob

I tested the main executable and Raytracer. Both had problems, unfortunately. After that I didn't bother with MagicLink. I'm a little bummed since Cinema4D, Aladdin 4D, and Lightwave all had problems. Blender works great, but I hoped the older programs would run as-is. Oddly enough things like Cycas run beautifully.

Of course there is still time to fix this. Since all three run a treat on my X5000, there's no reason they shouldn't work on the A1222. Hopefully the developers will dig in on this and help get it resolved. I suppose running software from the early 90s shouldn't be the focus since we have so much great new stuff, but still....

Anyway I'll be updating the lists in my guide on a regular basis, so check it again before you make your decision on purchasing the system. I'm hoping we'll get the few things that don't run into the 'performance fine' category!

@eliyahu

There are 3 different versions of both Cinema 4D and Raytracer. Look in Cinema4d/Progamfiles there are 3 drawers named NOFPU, FPU and FPU2.

@Rob

As this is a MC680x0 tool, its likely you need special SPE version of Petunia, and I don't see why it should not work as well as on other PPC CPU's, after all it has do the same there.

But that will only happen if someone does that,
so we need to bring Ratcy back from his slumber.

@Rob

Thanks for the suggestion. My installation doesn't have a Programfiles drawer, so I found the old CD and did a re-install, this time selecting the 68020 version. And it works! I still get the same damned freeze on occasion when bringing up the information window, but otherwise it seems to work fine. I'll probably play around and see how good/bad raytracing time is. I don't expect it will be brilliant, but the only time I open Cinema4D is to view other people's work anyway.

I'll update The Guide based on this. Thank you!

There's a thread comparing various Vampire and 68k systems using Cinema 4D benchmarks.

Link.

There where some benchmarks of various NG systems but I can't find them right now.

A lot of great effort put into this. Wow.

BTW I used to travel to Waterbury often as a kid to visit my Great Aunt.
