I just got the new version of Heretic II, it runs really well, I’m playing on my old AmigaONE-XE computer, after a while get texture problem, perhaps its time check the graphic card, and put on some new thermal paste. But that’s not my main problem.

My main problem is when I need to climb down into sewer or other small openings in the floor in the game, is there any trick, to falling down into these holes? it seams it always tries to step over the hole or avoid falling down.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Did you try to crouch? I vaguely remember when playing the demo few years ago I had similar problem and got over it. Once I get my copy of this version (monday or tuesday), I may test it myself.

@NutsAboutAmiga

1. AmigaOs4.1 Final Edition Update 2 - required.

2. Do you have it installed - MiniGL V2.24 ?
http://os4depot.net/share/driver/graphics/minigl.lha

3. What graphics card?
Maybe there's a lack of graphics memory on your texture card?
Check in 640x480 or 320x240 mode.

5. Please send a screenshot "texture problems" to the address:

tirionareonwe@gmail.com

i reinstalled the OS not long ago, when installed SSD disk.

3. Radeon 9250 (this is what Ranger says anyway.)
4. 800x600
5. Wait, I will take some pictures.

@NutsAboutAmiga

This appears to be a bug in the Radeon R200 graphics card driver.
The same effect occurs on Radeon M9 Mobility (Sam440ep) and Radeon 9250 (AmigaOneXE).

We are working on a bug fix.

@NutsAboutAmiga

I am the actual person who implemented Heretic 2 (both the version 20 years ago and the new version, if you have any more input i would appreciate emailing to tirionareonwe@gmail.com or by private message to discord user "magicsn" - that is me).

Could you try in the console:

gl_ext_multitexture 0
gl_sortmulti 0

(after that restrt the game please)

Multitexturing is one of the new features of the game, but I do not have a gfx card below Radeon HD 7770, so it might be this causes an issue.

Another issue might be checking gl_texturecache.

It should be 4000000 by default but maybe raising it might improve the situation.

gl_texturecache 10000000

or whatever (again restart after the change, default is 4000000)

I checked on the Radeon 9250, it has 128 MB graphics memory, maybe this is the issue (in which case increasing the cache might help).

This is a first evaluation what might cause the issue.

Under what circumstances do the errors actually happen ? 9250 has 128 MB memory. Also what resolution and depth do you have on Workbench ?

Thanks.

Best regards,
Steffen

It seems I have the very same issue only in the console screen and only in 800x600. 640x480/1024x768/1280x1024 seems to be fine (or I'm lucky).

@pavlor

Interesting. Does changing the resolution help for @NutsAboutAmiga too to workaround the problem ?

It might be related to the different BytesPerRow in 800x600 (as far as I remember it was 832*2 or whatever instead of 800*2 while for the other screen sizes it is exactly as it should be. Though I'd wonder why something like this happens with the 3D HW renderer... and only on specific gfx cards...

@MagicSN

amig_os already wrote it was bug in the 3D driver, I’m guessing there small difference between graphic cards chips, different divers for different graphic cards.

I'm going to try 1024x768 and see if I get same result or if works.

@MagicSN

The game locked up, when I hit explosive barrel, so I checked my serial console:

looks like Warp3D is trying to unlock a failed hardware lock.

or it can be a problem in W3D_Picasso96.library at function 0x7FC0B378
perhaps usng addr2line on ( section 0 @ 0x1354) give some more info.

The stack trace looks odd, perhaps its not caused by the game but an interrupt routine.

Screen shot of where the game got stuck:

@MagicSN

The texture problem is gone in 1024x768.

The game is playable the fps is good, a lot better then old game, and swamp level looks correct.

The games does lockup from time to time, most of time it can not get into newshell from aux:, I do not know if the same crash, as one I reported when its hard lockup, it can be just memory got differently corrupted.

I can’t say for sure if its driver problem or not, but I guess it is, as I have not seen anyone else reporting it, I expect most people are playing the game on newer hardware.

I have to remember to save the game often, it helps.
(I have to do that anyway, as often die.)

Glad I'm not alone. To be fair, it is a lot easier than Jedi Knight 2.

@MagicSN

I found something odd while playing Heretic 2 on my notebook (QEMU). I don't see ammunition remaining for the Hellstaff or bow. This may be an issue with software rendering, because - if I remeber correctly - the same problem was in tutorial that I played on Pegasos 2 also with software renderer.

Edit: The same issue also in MiniGL.

Do you know if the new H2 and Q2 ports will be available for registered owners of the previous versions to download?
