High CPU usage with DMA enabled?

Hello All!

Is there anyone out there that have the internal beta with DMA
enabled?
I contacted Titan Software once again to plead for an AmigaOS4
version of Papyrus, and also BurnIt 3.0.
What's up with Mr Garlich answers? Is he totally blue or what?

My only real trouble with his answers is the one concerning
the high CPU usage (45-56%) with DMA enabled..
So what's up is the damn thing broken or what?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's my questions and his answers:

A little OT: Is there actually a good way to (i.e. tool to use to) measure the CPU usage in OS4?

@AmiDog

Sure, have a look here :
http://os4depot.net/index.php?function=browse&cat=utility/docky
said to be a cpu meter and clock to fit in the amidock toolbar but I never tried it myself.

Only Aos4 works on Aone, no Linux

Funny. I wonder what kind of OS I run (along OS4) when I turn my machine on. It has a Penguin and all that, but it mustn't be Linux because mr.Garlich can't be wrong, of course.

The only point he made with such email is that his words are filled with hate and spreading false claims.

Sorry, but Mr.Titan knows nothing about latest status of OS4, status of UDMA driver and how *well* it progressed since the prerelease.

I am a OS4 beta tester. Like other beta-testers I don't have the permission for giving out information, but I am sure Hyperion and OS4 developers will give you the right answers to these false claims when the time comes..

I doubt he'll be selling many copies of 68k Papyrus around here now

@poweramiga2002

Hyperion or other OS4 developers should contact Titan with the last UDMA benchmark.

I think you should make a bet. If the OS4 development team does pull off acceptable UDMA performance than all current A1 owners get a free copy (OS4 native of course) of his software and all upgrades for life. If they don't we'll all buy MorphOS and become enlightened.

That guy can go scratch his arse. Even if all what he said is true, the way he wrote it was crass and unprofessional. This is certainly no way to conduct Technical or Sales Support in response to customers, particularly potenital new ones . I thought his software was looking very promising and I would have purchased it. He will not see a penny from me ever now no matter whether he ports to OS4 or not even if it means I have to use MS Office products for the forseeable future.

Tell me, did you request Michael Garlich authorisation before posting pulically private emails from him ?

I wouldn't appreciate your manners if I were him...

Concerning the state of the current "Amiga" Market (Causes and consequences) Michael is right... believe it or not.... and remember only truth hurts...

Concerning linux on A1, Michael was talking about a linux kernel with working DMA...
(remember the MD5 test...)
Of course linux works fine on A1 using PIO modes...

@Mikey_C
read the remember again..
Your sense of humor must be worked again and again...

I am glad you found my moderation of your post funny, I hope you continue laughing whilst your account is locked for 1 day. Mikey C

AmigaOne Linux hasn't been updated since the dark ages. The "Amiga insistance" that everyone can run a 2-year old Linux distribution with zero manufacturer support is laughable.

Every company that ships hardware intended or even capable of supporting Linux as a serious option for users contributes HUGELY to the kernel and distributions. Genesi has a man in the Debian team and we're very friendly with the Gentoo guys - but that's not because of nefarious means or plans, just because we worked to build a relationship!

If someone fixed up AmigaOne Linux, ported drivers to 2.6.x and Mai's custom kernel additions (possibly, if they are able to be published?) then they'd find their way into both distributions, and more, quite quickly.

So the question is.. why isn't anyone doing it?

I would recommend to remove the quoted mail until the original poster confirms that he has the permission to post it on a public bulleting board.

And let's not start a witch hunt here, okay? Not developing for OS4 (for whatever reasons, I doubt that Mr. Garlich revealed the real issue in this mail) is not a federal crime.

Most jurisdictions allow reposting of e-mails.

Netiquette might be a different story but then again it doesn't seem like mister Garlich is in any position to lecture about that.

Yeah, and this is proven by ripping some private statement out of context and publishing it on a website? Interesting concept...

I wouldn't want to see the kind of reply MorphOS users recieve when asking you privately for a MOS version of Real3D

Slandering competition is, in my book. If someone can't say something friendly, he should just say nothing at all.

I'm not upset about his unwillingness to produce OS4 software (I won't produce MorphOS software either) but I don't reply to customer queries that the Pegasos is an utterly broken piece of hardware, that bPlan/Genesi destroyed the Amiga market or any such slandering. A simple "We have no plans to produce an OS 4 version of Papyrus" would have been sufficient.

It just goes to show character.
