@clebin

one should never order more memory at applestore when purchasing a mac. It can (atleast up until now) always be bought from a local store much cheaper and inserted by the user himself at home without much hassle.

(saved me around $80 when I got an iBook)

sounds overpriced and should have been shown at CES and taken on Gates crap IMHO

If this is overpriced, then what is the amigaone?
PPC platform has always been more expensive than the x86, you just cannot compare those two.. The x86 design has sucked since beginning and still sucks today...

You can't really compare Eyetech with Apple.

Meh. I just got through to the Apple store - after adding all the cool things that I wanted (wireless kb/mse, superdrive, etc.) the total came to over 1000 GBP... not quite as attractive anymore!

(Edit - aha... Apple charge 300 quid for 1GB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM, whereas generic stuff retails for under 90 quid. Hmph. Drop all the unnecessary expensive bits, and it's under 600 quid... nope... still not good enough for an impulse buy!)

@ExiE

I think that it shows that the pricing of the MicroA1 is really quite competitive if you factor in that Apple sells around 4 million machines a year and the Amiga market isn't even 1/1000 of that volume.

The fact of the matter is that the Amiga market is very small even compared to the Apple market.

Some people like the AmigaOS well enough that they are willing to spend a bit extra.

Others whine about pricing whilst running emulation software on their x86 box.

@Intuitioned

Boy, if I could turn this thing into a home theater device (with video recording), the piggy is going to get it!

But for 5.1 audio I lose an USB port. And what about 6.1, for instance The Lord of the Rings, or does it simply transfer the digital audio stream to the receiver?

For IR remote I lose another USB.

So video recording should preferably go on the FireWire port, but USB solutions are more sold. Sure I could buy a USB hub, but it also means I get a lot of spaghetti...

And last but not least, adding a touch screen usually needs an USB port too. You might wonder why I would need a touch screen. Well, I always try to keep my 32 inch TV off when I am playing MP3's.

Oh, Apple or Eyetech, could you please release something like this? Just call it the Mac Mini+ or uA1+.

As a Mac, it's a fantastic little thing. Price, size, features all look good to me. It's the first Mac sold without a 1-button mouse, which is more significant than selling a Mac without a mouse at all in a way.

Chris

Not quite. Before Jobs' return, about pre-97 all Macs were sold without keyboards and mice. And they were *very* expensive to buy! (I could be wrong on the year, but there definitely was a time!)

Sure - but thats hardly the point in the grand scheme of things. These users who run emulation on their x86 box would be more inclined to go out and buy a mini mac and run emulation on it than on a uA1. Many ppl are saving for a uA1 - and this may tempt them away. It is a very tempting piece of kit, and it does blow the uA1 out of the water. Apple have a good strategy here - it will temp ppl away from windows. Take my Dad for example - a computing numbnuts fed up with virus and all the other crap. One of the Amiga One / OS4 selling points was its free of viruses and all the other crap. Now Macs are cheaper... and with the larger software base.

There is a danger here of loosing out. No matter what angle you look at it - the mini mac is bad for amiga as a desktop machine.

Well a couple of things. First and foremost, this is the Mac I have been waiting for. I, of course, would like a dual G5/2.5 or greater but I simply cannot justify it. I have an AGP G4/400 that would cost me $500 to upgrade. True it is far more expandable than the MacMini but it has older hardware, slower busses and is much larger. I'll donate it to a family member or something like that.

Secondly, as far as racking up the price to over a 1000 using the Apple Store, all the Macs are like that. You start adding in all the extra features on the other models and you will start adding 30-50% of the total price to the main bill. So that's nothing to complain about anyhow. Besides, like others have pointed out, buy your RAM online and only get the wireless stuff if you absolutely need it now. I use an ergonomic keyboard and a USB 3 button mouse anyhow so I don't need their stuff.

Finally, perhaps we can all appeal to Amiga Inc for the right to get AmigaOS 4 on Mac Hardware. This really has made more sense since the beginning and if we all pressure them perhaps we can get it done. We'll always be supporting the Amiga hardware in one shape or another but come on now we should be able to get this done with sufficient pleading to the company. It could only increase exposure to the OS anyhow. And even if they're unwilling to port it, perhaps they could at least allow the hobbyists the permission and means to do if we can figure it out. That would be meeting us halfway.

Just my two cents
