I like the idea of using the slider for the prefs icons, but as it's a kind of meta-icon, it should stand out more. Here is a version with the slider oval outlined, and standing slightly outside the edges of the main icon image to help indicate that it's a secondary element. It could afford to be even more strongly outlined than this.

I think this is an example of a slight lack of contrast in quite a number of the icons, which makes them appear flatter and slightly less distinct than they ideally should. Conversely, to my eye some of the colours are too bright.

This is a quick modification of one icon - note darkening of the lines on top of the box, which fade too much into the background of the original. It makes the box seem a bit more solid, and would be particularly beneficial on a poor / low contrast display. I've also desaturated the blue of the drawer and added a touch of green - I've never been a huge fan of these blue drawers anyway, but I find the ones in this set a bit too bright.

Otherwise Mason's done a fine job here - although I think they could do with a little tweaking yet, the artwork is very nice and there's clearly a lot of intelligent thought put into the icon set. I have to say that IMHO there's one major exception to that; the reddish-orange gold colour used in a few places looks garish to me. I find the Trashcan icon ugly and attention-grabbing, while the gold colouration of the CD-ROM icons looks over the top to my eye. I'd go for something more restrained like this, or go for a more traditional silver/spectrum look for the CDs.

Finally, I'd change the WBStartup icon. You shouldn't depend on red-tone differentiation to make a shape clear, for accessibility reasons. Red differentiation is the hardest for displays to do well, and the common forms of colour blindness would make the image hard to understand too - look here and you'll see how the icon would appear to someone with protanopic colour blindness.

There are quite a few things I would like to see done to the icons as well as offering some sort of 3rd party icon sets. For one thing, the 255 colors are great, but I honestly can't wait for 24bit +alpha icons. I personally can't stand shadows that aren't alpha based and I'm glad they are gone off these icons. Not all of the icons support the proper size. Some of the placement is off which would require snapshotting in the window.

Workbench 4.0:
- Devs drawer is slick
- Trashcan is old (already stated previously)
- WBStartup switch doesn't have enough contrast
- The blue slider knob on the prefs drawer can hardly be seen
- The internet drawer needs refining
- MUI drawer needs changed
- Graphics drawer needs changed
- Graphic Demos?

Prefs:
- Workbench icon isn't right, needs redone.
- rework popup menu
- Input needs to be removed almost entirely
- Presets, color of blue is too bright on the doc slider
- USB, Serial, AHI... WOW!
- MUI needs redone
- Pointer, black? What happened to the red?
- Local, Internet should be redone, don't like the globe chosen
- DefIcons, yuck, there's absolutely no definition there
- Rest are okay, keep those

Dockies:
- These need a bit more work

Utilities:
- Installer NG looks the way it should. The rest need some work

Tools:
- SGrab needs to be redone.
- The change to MEmacs is good
- PrepCard looked better with the lines and color

System:
- USB is slick, change the usbstart sub image
- TypeManager needs to be rotated
- The eraser on Formats need refining
- Slick Reaper dude!
- FixFonts has little definition, needs reworked

Commodities:
- Chage PowerMenus
- The rest are good

WBStartup:
- Get rid of the DefIcons icon... you're done

Disks:
- You might want to rework the discs, bronze of DVD, silver for else
- Download icon, change the globe.

Monitors:
- VoodooAvenger - dude, that's sweet

Datatypes:
- Put some higher contrast on the 3d shapes
- Needs resizing on all of them.

DOSDrivers:
- The pipe is cool, same with conclip... don't touch

There ya have it. As for the globe, I would go with something that had quite a bit more definition it in rather than a two-tone look. Try this globe for starters:

Work on it and scale it down as needed. It's an 8bit PNG file with alpha. I don't think I've missed anything, but you should be able to spot something that needs work from this post.

You've done an awesome job so far Martin, keep up the good work!

- because I like my pints!

500% improvement! I cant believe what they've managed to do with the newicons limitations...great work! We'll have 24bit PNG icons one day, but until then, the wait wont seem so long.

-Edit- eek i've just read everyone elses comments.. I think my comment sounds over the top now. hehe

Maybe it's just me, but seems a bit dull (does not stand out as it should) to me.

I think they need some semitransparent plastic like vibe or something...

But it's NOT bad Just my opinion.

A black outline as stated earlier would do the trick!

Since Mike Bouma decided to post this to OSNews.com, I think it might be useful for the artist to take a look at what they said. If non-Amiga users' opinions matter (and supposedly they do matter, since Hyperion has said repeatedly that they want to make a good first impression) check out this web page. The majority opinion is (at the time of this writing) highly critical.

Some of them is really cool......and some of them is uncool.

I think there is way too much confusion. Colors need working on, and those ugly blue drawers steals too much space from the icons.

The sliderthing is hard to understand, and overall I don't like this iconset.

But some of them is marvelous

Hondo will keep dreaming about the "killerset" to come

After looking at that xicons.com website linked from osnews it makes these icons look inferior...

I love what has been achived here. Aesthetically, well no one is ever going to like everything and the designs are fine.

Here is what I really admire and like -- I am seeing a clear icongraphy -- a language of Icons
being used and this I like very much.

What we need is a definition of this language for Amiga something in print (eventually) which sets out how things can be represented, or rather how many different and distinct representations can be associated together -- then people can design whatever they like, because only the "letters" are being redesigned the "words" stay the same.

I doubt many will get my drift on this, but the switch thing on prefs, the little pipes for pipes etc are intelligable no matter how they get rendered. I espcially like the idea of adding a couple of symbols to show data files as distinct from other files.

Most important, and I think people have missed this, is the iconography associated with
disk icons. Film disk space, system diskspace, etc needs just this touch, we need a rich variety of such things and similarily with drawer types.

Just a thought -- but basically nice one guys -- really apprieciate the work.

ok, i must say this was abit of a smack in the face!

i used to be fond of glowicons but in overall they are abit boring ,
and since we MUST use icons in os4 (and not dopus magellan etc ) i would like to sign a petetion or something to get the icons "outlined" , it feels
way to flat and without the outline my eyes just registers colors instead of pictures (might ofcourse be because of the big resulution here)

can we get a screenshot in 1024x768 or 1152x8xx plz ?

anyway i know mason worked hard on this as usual but i dunno i think i expected too much this time around!

Instead of complaining why don't you all
make some nice icon-sets for the OS4 CD.

You can put them online in the community
page from os.amiga.com.

De groetjes, Dirk.

I tried licking the screen, but I could not detect any difference in the flavour from 3.9.

I thought that 0S4 was going to have 256 flavours available. Maybe this feature is lost in a screenshot?

I hope you're not going to say this won't be out until 4.1

Regards

When you read the OSNews, you can see that new guy and old guys mostly do not like these NEW new icons set.

Generally I like Masons Designs, but this thime i think he done these in a hurry. When you look at the other OS es you will see that our icon set look TOO FLAT and Like DRAFTS of New Designs.

I know Hyperion has a plan to change UI completely later. But I think at least we have to be careful with our First Step To Future.

For example at least we must have an iconify gagget to iconifiy or minimize the windows. (like in REACTION UI)

Also Icon Set is the one of the most important thing when you look an os first time. For example MorhOS ; they have not better features than AOS but because of their wonderfull PNG Icons and make up they can attract more people at first time.

I do not want to say we need PNG icons or someting like that but we actually need better icon set.

Our backgorunds are OK
Our OS is solid Rock and efficient
Gardigent and Transperent effects are wonderful.

BUT

Our windows are TOO SQUARE
Our icons are TOO FLAT (but i also like some icons like ram disk, workbench drive, ...)

I am so sorry Hyperion and Mason, do not understand me wrong i just want to help you with my complains

Also for the all Amigan guys lets make more icons and send them to os.amiga.com. But i do not know how to make good icons . Does anyone knows any tutorial or progarms?
