Software News   Software News : AmigaOS4 Video of native P96 drivers
posted by MikeB on 9-Jul-2004 5:12:58 (8412 reads)
Within our forums Xeron pointed to a video made by an OS4 betatester demonstrating the native P96 graphics drivers:

"One of the OS4 betatesters put this video of native P96 on his homepage. This is not an official OS4 demonstration, just one users machine. The picture quality is low, but it gives an idea of the speed. Check it out:"

I don't know how they managed, but somehow they did manage to make the AVI unplayable by Windows Media Player. Either they are using some exotic format of AVI(?) that is not supported by the most common media player in the world(!), or the AVI is somehow breaching my company network's security settings in IE.

And I really wanted to see that movie...

Nice to see that I'm not the only one having trouble with ClickToFront.

Can't wait for the native graphics! Good work!

@samface,
The video seems to be in DivX-format.

The redraws seem quite fast, but is the screen flickering when resizing windows? Hard to tell from the video.

I have not seen the video yet, but if it has been filmed on a CRT rather than a LCD display, you will find the flickering is due to the difference in the refresh rate of the monitor and the camera taping the demo. If not, then maybe there is still a little more work to do for the P96 driver!

@Menthos

Olny? Oh dear, i have problems with CTF from the OS4 beginning, but it should be better if Tantiglione ported to OS4 his WindowsToFront ;-p

@ hnl_dk

I thought I had DivX installed already but tried anyway, and surprisingly enough it did the trick! Boy, do I feel stupid...

Thanks for the hint, hnl_dk.

Just at the time when some people (including myself) were worried about update speed - this little thing comes along!

Wow, really fast!
It's much faster than I saw on Amiga-Event in Essen.
Great! :)

[Cut&Paste of another thread]

To give you some aditional info about the video linked by XERON, below is information given by the author of this video (translated in english by me):

Quote:
So here is my AOne filmed with my Webcam, 320*240, with my PC that crawl to encode in DIVX in real time.

P96 PPC + Graphics PPC + MUI PPC

It shows the reactivity of the MUI apps, icons display (like you'll see, PNG are faster than glow), and especially, the powerfull AmiPDF decoding large PDF quite as quickly as my Centrino 1.7 ! (yes yes, i've made the comparison).

Some precisions :

- even if you'll not notice it, my MUI is loaded of JPG as large as the screen. They do some smooth waves, so you will see in the video a rather monochrome MUI, but there's no solid color at all!

- likewise with my window backdrop : you'll see it black, but it's a dark 1280*960 picture.

- slackening that you may see are mostly due to the PC or the Webcam having a bad time ;)

- the quality is poor, yes ! But the goal is not to see "sharp", but to see "quick"

- as you may see, opaque resize of a drawer is deactivated when the window is processing the listing+displaying (of a rather full drawer). As soon as the listing is complete, the opaque resize is reactivated. Bug ?

Quote:
The machine used is an AOne G4/933Mhz, with Voodoo 3 3000

Quote:
The first PDF file has a lot of page (see on the left of AmiPDF) and its size is 2.5M, and the second is a single page, 800KB one. Antialias is ON.

Btw, the file is a [edit] XVID - sorry[edit].

Woww! It's now just as decent as Mor... err... That other system It's nice that P96 is native now, I wish it could happen just about the same time when CyberGraphics went PPC native (around somewhere 2000-2001)... But credit is due, really good job!

Really fast! It's like AmigaOS on steroids

I like it when they click on the SimpleMail icon and a msec later the window pops up.

I think he was talking about the P96 graphics, but as for the download, yes it was nice and quick too. I was getting 350k download speed when I grabbed the video last night
