Software News   Software News : OS4 version of Beats Of Rage Released
posted by lovely on 16-Jul-2005 17:16:04 (7340 reads)
The stunning freeware beat em up game "Beats Of Rage" which is based upon King Of Fighters/Streets Of Rage has now hit OS4.

Mr Capehill ported it and the port has all sounds and music along with a 2player mode and of course the nifty and colour full graphics.

The game can also be played in window mode and in fullscreen in the choice of low or highres (highres beeing 640x480)

Beats Of Rage also supports alot of mods (ie other games/add-ons) (search the web for BoR Mods for more info)

Info:

The Game data files is downloaded from here:

And ofcourse the OS4 binary can be found at os4depot:

This was my first news item so be gentle oh and thanks to ToAks for showing me this game while i visited earlier today (and ofcourse thanks to MrCapehill for porting this gem of a game)

ps:i used over 20 minutes to figure out how to add Images and links as the buttons (url*/img etc) does'nt work in Ibrowse.

Well...that news item was very...lovely ;)

About the game, well, not exactly my favourite. If I was a 10 year old kid I might enjoy it. Anyway, the Senileteam's next game, Age of the Beast, looks promising. I hope they will open-source it.

Thumbs up, Mr. Capehill. Looks like you're becoming an SDL-porting machine (judging from your avatar, too :P). The graphics look cool (they've been ripped from an SNK game, though), I'm curious to see how much playable it is, too. I remember Streets of Rage 2 on Megadrive/Genesis being at the time one of the best side scrolling beat 'em ups!
The faq on the team's site is funny, too:

"Q: Will there be a version for Neo Geo / Mac / Gamecube / Saturn / Linux / BeOS / FreeBSD / Unix / MSX / Vectrex / Atari 2600?
Who knows? "

Ironically it has been ported to an Os which has been left out from that list :)

And this I should add to my list of YAM taglines:
"Q: Why can't I get the game to run?
Because of your inability to work with computers. "

Varthall

@Varthall, it's no secret that "I love SDL", it is a nice API.

Ps. I think about doing Gamecube port, I got the development hardware finally. I just don't know how to deal with that 60MB of data - phew.

EDIT: fixed some HTML stuff..

If you have only 256MB RAM or less, don't try running it from RAM:. I extracted all the files to the RAM Disk and then started it and it stops at loading the fonts. Then I copied it to the Hard Disk and deleted it from the RAM and it works fine now. Even currently it plays the title song at the background. The only little gimmick I saw while playing it, is that the Pointer doesn't disappear at fullscreen mode.

drhirudio:

yep the pointer can be seen while playing in fullscreen but you can move it outside of the screen if you want to

also i noticed that there is not much graphical difference (if any?) when playing the game in 640x480 or the lower one or well atleast not in fullscreen anyway.

For some reason, the game loads extremely slow from the RAM disc compared to hard disc. Avoid it.

And the game runs always in 320x240 resolution internally. It only scales to 640*480 or 800*600 or whatever given.

@nubechecorre

You don't need to unpack the .PAK file the executable uses it in that form (at least, this is how it's on the peecee, don't know for A1)

MD5Sum is a tool that calculates the checksum of the given file.

If you downloaded the archive mentioned in instructions, try

md5sum archive.zip

and compare the result. If it's the same, the file is the same and no errors happened during download.
