Software News   Software News : Tower57 for the Amiga Tabor announced, video available
   posted by Petah on 13-Feb-2017 23:21:12 (3724 reads)
This last Monday, Hyperion Entertainment, caretaker and developer of AmigaOS, not only announced that the Chaos Engine-esque third person top down shooter Tower57 - financed by a Kickstarter fund raiser - is in the works for the Amiga Tabor, but also showed the first video portraying the version targeting the upcoming Amiga system.

If what is seen in the video is a good representation of the final product, Amiga gamers can look forward to some colourful and intense action with framerates in the mid 30s, with occasional peeks in the upper 40s. Allegedly, the current build should have room for further optimization since the blog post detailing the shooting frenzy states that the most recent version uses a software rendering pipeline, and hints at upcoming hardware acceleration. Future versions may, the post concludes, push the envelope further.

Looks fantastic but I wonder if there will be a performance hit in full-screen mode. A window that's 1/4 size of the desktop seems to play quite well but there are 4 times as many pixels to push in full screen at the desktop resolution vs the windowed mode.

@ferrels

That's assuming full screen is running at the desktops resolution (which is pointless given the low resolution the game is designed at). Not to mention drawing to a screen is faster than drawing in to a window.
Upscaling to a high resolution is of no benefit (quite the contrary) to a pixel art type game as well. On systems where hardware acceleration is modest like the amiga-oid OSes you'll also get speed gains by running a lower resolution screen mode too.

Long story short, I'd expect a bit of a speed gain in full screen mode.

Fantastic news! The first new Amiga bundle! Just add Sketchblock, the new Octamed and Wings and we have our new Amiga pack! Competition needed to give our new 'Bat Pack' a name

Include a floppy drive and easy out of the box emulation and you will have a real chance to sell lots of new Amigas back to the mainstream. Needs a new A1200 like case too.

Well done Hyperion and A-Eon - I never thought we would get this far.

Please, no by default. I was never fan of A500/1200 design. A1000 looks much better.

Tower57 is definitely on my buy list.

@pavlor

Happily have it as an option!

I'm thinking the retro market which Trevor eluded to in his Amiga Ireland talk. Remember that the vast majority of happy Amiga memories are of the A1200/500/600 style case.

Personally I agree with you but I would like it in a mini cube instead.

@-Sam-

Not sure having Wings and Tower57, both of which are/will be available to actual mainstream (more powerful and cheaper) systems will sell *any* systems to people that wouldn't otherwise buy them. Heck, even AROS is getting versions of said software. Sketchblock and Octamed also have equals (or more accurately superior equivalents) on mainstream systems too. For free.

Also, while I appreciate the efforts of Hyperion and A-Eon you're giving them undue credit.
Neither Tower57, nor Wings are their software.

Nice to have a collection of decent software building up, but it'll hardly entice new people to the platform.

@Daytona75

Thanks for your hard work :)
Things seem to be slowly but surely taking shape.

daniel writes this is a version compiled specifically for that particular cpu. im not sure if this is particularly cpu demanding game, but it seems that its generic ppc version runs a bit above of the speed it reaches on a sam. the question is if another version of hardware comparable to a sam in price/performance range will have that much impact.

Good point. Apologies for missing that important credit out.

Daytona75 you are a hero doing what you do! But you know that already.

From the description:

And if you check out the fps counter you'll notice that it runs pretty fast, actually quite a lot faster than on a sam460ex (around 50 fps where the sam460 reaches about 30 fps;

Of course, we need more comparisons, especially with non SPE aware software, before we can determine where Tabor sits on the performance table with other OS4.x compatible systems.

Currently there's no hint that Sam460 boards will be produced again so Tabor is likely to be the default system for new customers that want something at the cheaper end of the scale. Also, while it may not turn out to be much of an upgrade compared to the Sam460 it but it's certainly more desirable to owners Sam440 owners or people with BPPC/CSPPC systems considering a dedicated system to accompany their 68k setup. It may even tempt Pegasos 2 owners who might start feeling left out as more Warp3D Nova software comes available, and Eyetech A1 owners if it turns out that they won't work with Radeon SI cards or the 33Mhz PCI slot proves too much of a bottle neck.

As a software developer I'm quite aware of the benefits and drawbacks of upscaling/downscaling. No need for the lecture.

As you seem to be in the know about how this game was developed, why don't you share with us what resolution this was written for? Or were you just implying that you knew the resolution? Until you or the developer can give us some numbers, you've done nothing but conjecture.

I don't see why A-eon can't do both. After all, the C128 came in both a keyboard case and a desktop case version.
