Introducing Tabor and the A1222
A powerful, low cost, entry level PowerPC motherboard

San Francisco 19th October 2015

A-EON Technology Ltd is pleased to announce that Tabor, a new powerful, low cost, entry level PowerPC motherboard, which forms part of our A1200 series, is about to undergo beta testing.

As part of our drive to create more powerful lower cost, entry level hardware and expand the Next-Generation user base we commissioned Ultra Varisys to create a new PowerPC motherboard. The result is Tabor, a 170 mm x 170 mm mother-board based on a Freescale QorIQ P1022 32-bit e500v2 dual-core PowerPC processor running at 1.2 GHz. Prototypes have already been shipped to key developers and members of A-EON Technology’s Core Linux support team and, as a result, several Linux distributions are already up and running on the Tabor board. Working in cooperation with ACube srl, a beta test programme is about to commence, which is already over-subscribed.

The full system is designated the AmigaOne A1222.

Depending on the price tag. This might be my first OS4 machine. (Not counting the OS4 classic running in FS-UAE).

Sounds like a great little board

You guys rock!

Is it a standalone board ? or is it a full solution - are A-eon working on a cool case ?

Could be great with a centered boing ball power button at a size of 3-5 cm with light in it

Maybe maybe...
Can you clarify what is the A1200 serie?
"•Support for resolution up to 1280x1024" with any card?

As I understood it, it's the inbuilt capability of the P1022 (supported or not by OS4, I don't know).

@ fjudde
Yes the P1022 has a build in DIU (Display Interface Unit).

@fjudde

Obviously it's the onboard graphics that can only do 1280x1024.

Now let's just hope OS4 will fully support the onboard features (shouldn't be TOO hard) and the workaround for the FPU reaches acceptable performance (there's been some doubt here)

Btw, I like the SD bootROM. Using this myself on a P1025 board. Really saves a lot of hassle in production and development. But note that only industrial SD cards (single level cells) will retain data long term. Would suck to wake up one morning a few years down the road and having to source compatible SD cards and card readers on eBay because they've gone the way of floppies

Oh and I hope this board has some power drain from the 12V rail. Modern ATX PSUs are built for mostly generating +12V. Even the low spec ones. Allthough Tabor would probably be best used with a PicoPSU.

And it price? Only 32bit support and 1.2 GHz? The price 200-300 euros will be good.

But we will see

Yes that was what I was trying to say with "the inbuilt capability of the P1022". I did not mean that it would reflect on graphics cards in the PCIe as the highest resolution. Reading my own post I see now that I partially failed.

And I Also hope it will be supported by OS4, Would be nice to try a dual monitor setup.

Should I read it as 3x400Mhz ~= 1200Mhz?

> Support up to 8GB RAM

Now I fail to recall how that is done on 32bit CPU & OS...

" Would be nice to try a dual monitor setup."

Me too! I'm grown used to use two monitors on my mainstream HW boxes.

@price
We must conquer the price challenge. To get new users the minimum HW dongle must not cost much.

on intel there seem to be some integrated mechanism:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE

this mechanism uses MMU to change between pages but is slow

normally you cannot address more than 4 GB

regarding PPC:
"The PowerPC 970 "G5" has 64-bit data paths and registers with native support for 32-bit application code."

Great News

If Price/Performance is ok, I'll probably buy one.

Thanks to all the developers involved.

-> Will there be one Tabor running at the Alchimie 0xb?
