Introducing Tabor and the A1222
A powerful, low cost, entry level PowerPC motherboard

San Francisco 19th October 2015

A-EON Technology Ltd is pleased to announce that Tabor, a new powerful, low cost, entry level PowerPC motherboard, which forms part of our A1200 series, is about to undergo beta testing.

As part of our drive to create more powerful lower cost, entry level hardware and expand the Next-Generation user base we commissioned Ultra Varisys to create a new PowerPC motherboard. The result is Tabor, a 170 mm x 170 mm mother-board based on a Freescale QorIQ P1022 32-bit e500v2 dual-core PowerPC processor running at 1.2 GHz. Prototypes have already been shipped to key developers and members of A-EON Technology’s Core Linux support team and, as a result, several Linux distributions are already up and running on the Tabor board. Working in cooperation with ACube srl, a beta test programme is about to commence, which is already over-subscribed.

The full system is designated the AmigaOne A1222.

So all in all one cane say that Tabor won't be competition for Acubes products till 2018.

Rhetorical question: if Tabor seems like a marginal board now, what will it look like in 2018?

2018 seems a little far away

it is all speculation right now. People should wait for announcements

2018 is just 26 months away, rather short in Amiga-terms....

@fjudde

You are correct!

I corrected my original posting to say PC3-6400. I blame no sleep for nearly 24 hours for that mistake. Nothing like coding deadlines...

It needs to be middle of 2016 at the latest or im giving up all hope of getting a OS4 machine. Why does it keep needing to be ported to new hardware when they are all ppc. Windows does not need to be ported every time a new x86 motherboard is released ?

Offcourse it does need to be "ported" aka. drivers need to be written/updated.

OS4 is not even running on the board yet, and the lack of a proper FPU requires writing/porting a FPU emulation from scratch. On the other hand, it's been running on the X5000 for ages but is still not ready for release, apparently - despite Hyperion having no problem with releasing unfinished versions and Trevor mentioning for months he's expecting only a "minimum viable product" release of OS4 for the X5000.

Tabor with OS4 in mid 2016 is simply not going to happen, period.

Why bother telling us when it's that far away. Another bad press release if 2018 is true.

Should be renamed a2020 sorry only joking just fed up with news like this only to find out it is no where near ready.

I have only a passing interest in this stuff, but I'm curious to know if a NIC driver (Gbit, woohoo!) will have to be written? I'm guessing the SATA will be AHCI so hopefully no problems there? USB?

Anyone know how much work it's likely to be?

I'm sure there's a logical reason why the hard roads are always taken when designing machines, supposedly dedicated for OS4 use...

@g01df1sh

Yeah, especially when they know there's an aspect to it (the unusual FPU) that's controversial. Or maybe they're hoping the FPU issue will be discussed to death over the next few months, so that when they eventually do release the board it will be a non-issue?

Id say they do us a favour.

Gives us something to discuss/moan about.

Imagine how boring this forum would have been if we couldnt be outraged about future developments!

The unbelievable thing is that on a world with so limited resources, each (an no one board missed this goal) new board is using some new component for which it is necessary to write a specific code. I would prefer to have some outdated component, well tested and save resources for the important stuffs.

@ilbarbax

Highly educated guess based on actual PPC board design cycle: The unbelievable thing is that if they hadn't used an outdated component but rather scrapped their design and moved to a T1022 the software side would have been so much easier they would probably BE ready in mid 2016. As it would have the same core as X5000, probably also mostly the same GbE and SATA interface.

Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.

On Windows they use clever techniques, like Driver layers which are universal and only update the changes they need.

They also can simulate different architectures using multiple virtual machines, within windows environment, EG shut down Windows GFX and start up and communicate with Linux GFX,
X Window sub system.

Question : How do we know OS4.x does not exist for this hardware Have I missed a comment or 2? (Sorry trying to view on mobile)

It is very disappointing if it is not ready. The fact that this news is posted on Amiga specific sites suggests that A-Eon are ready to go - not wait until 2018 as speculated. Great Linux is running on the board but this is not linuxworld.net!!

I hope along with others that OS4.x will follow very soon. A-Eon/Hyperion have been good to us recently so I am hoping they won't let us down.

Yeah, indeed, double means double, not triple, no matter what number follows...

How other systems use more than 4GB with 32bit OS:

http://superuser.com/questions/367490/can-a-32-bit-os-machine-use-up-all-8gb-ram-20gb-page-file

And the AmigaOS4.x way: http://blog.hyperion-entertainment.biz/?p=1131

Which uses the same mechanism.

Quote:
It seems emulated FPU is super slow on A1222. (1/30 of real FPU speed?)

Can be.
Quote:
But SPE optimized emulation is not that bad, even if it still is very slow. (1/10 of real FPU speed?)

No, much worse. Of course, it depends on how heavy the FPU is used, but forget a 1/10 (10 cycles are needed to just enter the trap handler and execute the FIRST instruction; in the BEST case).
Quote:
I think there is no PPC FPU to SPE JIT anywhere, yet. Perhaps never will be.

It requires A LOT of work. So, don't expect it. At least, not in two weeks.
Quote:
SPE optimized/compiled version of SW is OK fast. (~1:1 of real FPU speed)

It depends on what do you mean with "real FPU speed". What kind of FPU are you referring to?
Quote:
I have not yet seen any plan of implementing some kind of JIT compiler for 4.x legacy apps.... ?

See above: too much work. You already have to pray to get a decent FPU emulator which makes use of the SPE unit internally.
Quote:
(Most likely not needed as main apps can be recompiled for SPE.)

Right.
