@AMiGR

Fair enough, some people don't have use for computers or even TV sets. But what if you break both your legs or worse?

This is a part of the actual Home demonstration given during the keynote speech:

http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=17701&type=wmv
http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=17701&type=mov

IMO overall a good performance by Phil Harrison.

LOL! Well, it looks pretty well done if you ask me, even if it's not something I'd use that much.

I ask again.. Does the ps3 using linux support video overlay? Because that youtube video only showed it windowed and not in fullscreen..

If I correctly understand the question the answer is yes, my question to you I guess is why is this always so important to you, what exactly do you need to do that has to have video overlay?
-Tig

Because overlay increases both perfomance and picture quality- This is of great interest to me, as Linux and ps3 could then be used as a media box for all kinds of videos. This is pretty much the only use Linux on the ps3 would have for me.

PS3 is the ideal platform for an Amiga OS relaunch! However PS3 is exciting in its own right as it has been designed in the traditions of Amiga computers - i.e. a game console but with the power/capability to become a full home computer. In the long run if Amiga inc don't take the initiative then YDL Linux will take up the slack. C'est La Vie - Linux or OS4.0, its the applications that matter at the end of the day and I prefer Firefox to AWeb anyday

I disagree on technical grounds. However in answer to your question, there are at least two sites about setting up a PS3 running linux as a PVR, so I think it even more likley you can do what you want on a PS3 running Linux.

Not at all interested.

Why would anyone would think it's a good idea to jump from one piece of dead-end proprietary hardware to another?

I don't follow. The PS3 will be an awesome games machine, will boot to Linux in next to no time. It will enable you to use Open Office and Firefox and will have the support and backing of Sony for at least 10 years!! That's hardly "dead-end" proprietary hardware! The software will probably run on the PS4 under back compatability as well. What more could you ask? Sony are in this for the long run.

Finally: A PC will cost you a lot more in the long run and give more compatibility head aches:
A 1996 PS game is far more likely to run on a PS3 than a 1996 PC game is to run on a Vista PC!! Consoles simplify the home computer experience!

1) Widespread global availability.
2) Global mainstream hardware support (Sony is a strong company making huge profits with their other products).
3) Relatively low cost, state of the art device. (Price lower than actual production cost)
4) multifunctional (High def 1080p Blu-Ray movies, many of the most impressive games)
5) Mass production, lowering the price even further for the long run.
6) Mass marketing, widespread brand recognition. (We run on the Samantha! Who's that? We run on the Playstation 3! Hey I have one!)
7) Expected shelf life to last about a decade with nearly identically specced components.
8) Slimline version and interesting hardware expansions (HD Eyetoy) in the future.
9) The cheapest Cell development platform currently available.
10) IBM actively pushing homebrew Cell development using the PS3, Cell to be used in many other future devices (additional OS4 and OS4 software oppertunities).

Enough reasons? I think so!

According to Ninja Theory everything we have seen so far was months old, here's a more recent screenshot!

[edit]Slightly modified for backdrop usage. Full image here.

Um sort of... First the question has been raised if this is in game play or just a shot of a rendered FMV. Second the Ninja Theory team have said the image has been resized from gameplay, blurred around the edges, and a few other changes to make a nice looking backdrop, thus it's not exactly what you're going to get in game but a close representation. No doubt this looks better then the work they've done in 05. Just think what 2 more years of work would give them likely by then it'll be the 4D game which Sony promised their console could do. Putting the humor aside it seems more likely to be a manipulated render not actual game shot.

So you have a better or even better a cheaper alternative?

No overlay seems to cause video tearing and increase the cpu usage significantly when running a video in fullscreen, which would most likely lead to jerky playback of high definition videos even on a box with a powerful cpu like the ps3.
But i guess it does support it after all. Is just that i have read that the linux gfx driver is very lousy.

Think of it as methadone maintenance.

Measurements of writing speed from Cell gave figures vastly in excess of the frame rate a monitor could do. The video codecs will only run on the PPE and are probably not even optimised for it yet. Once they're using the SPEs there wont be a problem.

I think you are spot on. For the critics take a look at Gentoo Linux for the PS3, for example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPP2eVcsu2w
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozdOLV2q20k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MriAN2DPyZI

This was achieved within just a couple of months by the open souce community, compare this with your A1 Linux experience from the first couple of months. Imagine what your PS3 Linux experience will be like when Linux for the PS3 evolves further and more software gets PS3/Cell optimized!

@MikeB

Why is GTA IV not an exclusive?

'I don't think PS3 has the install base to support Rockstar's investment in GTA IV on its own.' - Phil Harrison

I think this says something about these larger more complex games. It's a matter of economics that porting to 2 consoles 360 & PS3 is likely going to happen more frequently to better ensure the return of profits to a company.

Also if the PS3 can't retake the 70% of the market and the shares end up more equitable, which they likely will, dual ports of games will be more of the standard then the exception.

Sounds like the PS3 might be better suited to running MorphOS. At least there would be fewer licensing issues involved.
