Of course it also covers bankruptcy, simply googling and checking out some cases will give you that answer. However, I did just now find out that it's really not about salary compensation but employee benefits compensation. Sorry, my bad. I'm also sorry for those americans suffering due to this quite fundamental flaw in the american welfare system.
In any case, I still think that an insolvent company with no chance of sorting out their outstanding debts shoud file for bankruptcy, giving creditors, including former employees, a chance to get whatever is possible out of any remaining assets.
