Good work!

I see MS Word 6.0 works. One wonders if it is more useable than AbiWord in AmiCygnix.

Works better with ShapeShifter on a 68060-Amiga.. But at least it works.

Fantastic work there Scott! What Amiga are you running OS4.1 on? Classic, A1, SAM, X1000?

@scabit

I was not aware that there was a Mac emulator that ran on OS4.x. This is great news! I enjoyed running the Emplant and Shapeshifter emulators on my A2000 many years ago, and will enjoy running Basilisk2 on my X1000 now and in the future. Just for running some of the older Mac programs or games, as I have plenty other Mac's to run MacOSX programs and games on.

What is the latest version of MacOS that Basilisk2 will run? Can it run MacOS8.0? 8.5, or 9.2?

To the other poster that wrote that Shapeshifter on a 68060 runs better, can you explain what you are comparing it against?

I was amazed and very pleased with how well my 030/33 A2000 ran MacOS7.5 as well as many real Mac's that were not too old at the same time I was emulating them.

MacOS 9 doesn't work on a 68k system.

If you are to use a previously Shapeshifter driven hardfile with Basilisk II then I would like to hear how that went.

@amigadave

the last 68k MacOS is v8.1.

If anyone wants a hdf or iso of 8.1/8.1 install they can have a copy contact me.
8.1 can use the newer unjournalled hfs+ filesystem

8.5.1 is only for 68k systems with a ppc card.
8.6+ is for ppc only systems.
up untill i realised my psu was the culprit for corrupting my hdd and my 4.1 install sdcard,
I was woriking on basiliskII also...

cool doom2 works on 68k?!

ill soon add to this list.
a real shame cdrom emulation doesnt work on 4.x yet...
I wonder if fusion ppc works well on 4.x - maybe faster or better featurelist than an assumed 68k app for os4 - basiliskIIos4.

now if someone could get MOL running on os4 - or linux for the 460 so I can run mol, I could run the ppc os's on my sam. i would run 7.5.5 for ppc really fast on a 1ghz cpu, as well as 9.2.2 and 10.4.

To my knowledge, Fusion PPC was never finished and left many people (including me) that bought it, angry at Jim Drew and Microcode Solutions for quitting on it shortly after releasing it for sale.

I don't know what happened to Jim Drew and his partner. I know that there were more than a few people unhappy with him for various reasons, but he was a talented coder that was an asset to the Amiga community. Shame about the author of Shapeshifter who (aledgely) stole code from Jim Drew and his partner to create Shapeshifter and Jim was unable to recover any damages, because it was too expensive to try to take him to court in a different country. I have Fusion PPC, but have never tried to install in on an OS4.x, or MorphOS2.x computer.

Thank you! I'd like to say you are one of the most productive posters here!

Why dont you use OS 8.1 instead of 7.5.5?

@AmigaDave
That stuff about Jim Drew getting screwed is correct. I
bought Ifuion as well it was pretty beta but did function.. but yes many ppl were pissed. (but how pissed if it was never released?

I tried installing MAC OS8.1 from Cd and could not get it to work with this version of Basilisk 2. That is, it installed and completed the process, but whenever I tried to boot from anything other than the CD, Basilisk 2 got locked up in the booting process when it goes to load extensions. And yes, I tried turning off extensions to no avail.
The current version of OS4 Basilisk 2 needs some work. It does not show proper timings with any performance utility I try to run on the MAC, speedometer, norton tools etc. Also it really needs some work on getting the ethernet I/O code for OS4 working so we can have high speed internet access. Some time ago I got dial up working through Basilisk 2, but it is obviously sloooooowww!
If anyone has a disk image of MAC OS 8.1 that works with the OS4 version of Basilisk 2, please PM me as I would like to try it. As I said, I have a proper Apple OS8.1 CD but although it boots from the CD drive just fine under Basilisk 2, I have never gotten a working installed partition for OS8.1.

Thanks,

Scott

The latest version I can get to run on the OS4 version of Basilisk 2 is Os7.5.5. It is supposed to work with 8.1, but I have not gotten that working.
The OS4 version of Basilisk 2 uses 68k emulation code from E-UAE, and as such is not (on my 800 Mhz ua1-c) quite as fast as running on a real 68060 processor where emulating the 68k code is not needed. On an X1000 this might be different. Even so, many games such as Arthur's Talking Book Adventures, The Learning Companies Gizmoes and Gadgets and Doom2 work just fine in 256 color mode on my AmigaOne with Basilisk 2.

We must hope that UAE JIT will be completed and then ported to Basilisk II.

Sounds good! This game needs at least 68040 to be useable.

Nice post! Good job testing all that stuff.

The Macintosh Garden website (http://www.macintoshgarden.org) is a nice
resource for Basilisk apps.

You got me to install the latest Basilisk from OS4Depot on my X1K. It ran
fine, but has similar issues like it had running on my SAM & XE... It's just
not quite as compatible as Shapeshifter was.

Specifically, I've been trying to run CAD software (MiniCAD7.0.3) that ran
fine on Shapeshifter; it loads up and generates MacOS error "type 28".
I tried boosting the app's RAM allocation and that made no difference.

For me, that's the main Mac app so I guess Basilisk will go into the ice box
until a better version comes along.

Yes, it would be nice if Basilisk supported networking and if the virtual SANA
network device works with Roadshow, so could share its connection with the
Mac. Hopefully, that will come at some point too.

Q: How do you get a Mac to multitask well?

A: Run a Mac emulation on an Amiga.

;)

Cheers. It should be even better on the X1000 then. Once again, great work sharing this.

@pjs

Out of curiosity, have you tried booting up with extensions turned off and then trying to run the MiniCAD 7.0.3? The MAC forums suggest that an error 28 may be the result of an extension incompatibility problem. You may have something in your extensions that causes the program to choke and die when you start it up.

It sure would be nice to have a new MacOSX emulator that could be run while using OS4.1.5 on my X1000, but I doubt that there is anyone capable of writing such an emulator around the Amiga community any longer.

I would love to be able to run MacOSX10.5.8 in a window, or separate screen, at the same time I am running OS4.1.5, and maybe DOS-Box in another window, or separate screen.

Does PC-Task run under OS4.1.5's Petunia emulation on an X1000, or does it need E-UAE to run?

That would really take me back in time to when I was running AmigaOS2.1 on my A2000 w/Vector 030/33MHz, with Shapeshifter running MacOS7.5.5 and running Windows3.1 on my Goldengate bridgeboard, all at the same time without any slow down of anything. That made people look and shake their heads in disbelief.

Hmmm.. I thought that one of the two versions of PC-Task worked under Os4 using Petunia.... the other crashed and burned. If I recall, two versions were supplied of PC-Task, one was a sort of JIT compilation while the other was not. I don't remember which one I got to work, but I am pretty sure ( at least in earlier versions of OS4) one of them did.

DosBox offers better compatibility with reasonable speed. Emulated 68k PC-Task wouldn´t be much faster.

I was told DosBox works OK on the X1000 even with 20000 CPU cycles (486DX/2 performance). For most old games 5000 CPU cycles is more than enough (including Win3.1/95).
