@umisef

Back in September, Alan sent us a batch of microA1-C boards (and afaik to another dealer too)
When we asked to have more boards (there wasn't enough to satisfy the demand) Alan replied there were other boards ready, but lack of 750Gx cpu modules.

@Thread

My opinion.
People make mistakes, Alan and evertyone else. It's probably going to happen again. Somtimes they say the wrong things in the heat of emotion, othertimes, the let slip the wrong thing. Who cares, move on and concentrate on a future.
If Alan from Eyetech is one more person of one more company making or attempting to make some AMIGA hardware, great. Bring it on.
The rest of all this garbage is just pointless. We need some hardware, who does it no longer phases me, I'd like it done sooner rather than later, the whole OS4 project is getting further and further held back because no one can even buy the system yet.
I say stop bickering over he said /she said stuff and find something more constructive to try and get this platorm moving faster again.
I'm no programmer so I just register software I use or write letters to people asking for hardware :-\

So far, no luck obtaining a board I want, I still support the community in what I use.

The sound chip was not working

I never heard at any time that it was broken. I just heard they just didn't have a driver for it. Now there is so that proves it wasn't broken or am I wrong? I think sometimes things get spread around that are not exactly true and because enough people say it, then others start to believe it.

Perhaps Eyetech could have done a better job, but the way I look at it, these are very early boards that were released before any OS was available that could really take advantage of all the capabilities of the board. I am actually surprised there is not more wrong with them. I am still running my AmigaOne board without any problems to report. Yes my DMA is still not fixed, but it is still running pretty solid with the exception of the battery I had to replace the other day.

I can confirm that new A1's will be available. That's the good news. The bad news is that everyone with one will have to sell them to everyone without one.

ba-ZING.

@nzv58l

Eyetech were selling systems, since there was no support for it in any OS, it could qualify as not working, enough to make them remove it from other runs. This is even more likely, considering that other, PCI, soundcards already had drivers and were much better than the on board audio can ever get. My bet is that it was an unneeded expense.

We firmly believed it was broken, more so since it didn't work under Linux. On PC motherboards the BIOS sets up the VIA including powering up the audio part. That was all that was needed in the end. Writing a driver in itself was not a problem (as we had shown already for multiple chips). Alan would have never taken off the chip if it was just a lack of driver.

Nope. Keeping low because of legal disputes.

Was Alan nearly caught with a suitcase full of CPU's he smuggled in from the black market so he had to wait for the fuzz to get off his trail?

When one does not say what is going on, then they leave it to everyone with an imagination to try and figure it out. It would have been good if he had said something to the community. Even something like we have some issues that need to be sorted out, but we promise we have not given up on the Amiga community and will get some hardware ready as soon as we can.

That was not Eyetech's fault! Eyetech always believed it would work.

I wasn't trying to imply anything else. My use of the was just my way of expressing something like "tough luck".

Best regards,

Is this chip unobtainable for you to replace?

I don't know. I wouldn't want to do it myself, at least (eyesight and hand steadiness far from what they used to be), but I have been considering having it added if and when I turn the board over to someone skilled for getting the DMA and USB fixes anyway.

It will have to wait until I have another one (Micro, PV, Amy05, whatever), though, as I don't want to spend a single day without OS4.

Best regards,

Niels

September? That's encouraging. I thought it had been nearly a year since any MicroA1s were sent out to dealers.

You know, that is exactly how I am feeling. When a board with faster CPU than I have now comes out I will spring for it. Only then will I let go of my XE G4 for the repair fixes.

Are these the ones we've been waiting for since September-ish 2005??

What about asking nicely: Pretty please with sugar on top?

This whole situation is no good.
We need new hardware that can run OS4.
Ok, there are some on the way, Amy05 and PV, but it feels like we're loosing momentum with these months without anything to offer people who'd like to run OS4.

And tens of thousands of dollars from those who finally went ahead and spent

@m3x

Yeah, but even if they couldn't get hold of 75GX there's always the option
of going back to 750FX for a batch or two. I can't believe lack of correctly
priced CPU's was/is the only reason for this delay.

Also why should IBM deny a small board maker any CPU's?!? Sound strange!
IMHO IBM wants to sell ALL and ANY PowerPC chips they can.

The legal problems between MAI and the Articia S chip manufacturer seems
a more plausible reason for no more µA1-C's in the market.

@Thread

Also I don't believe that there is any A1 boards manufactured without CPU cards.
Why would there be? IMHO they're done at the same time when ALL components
have arrived.
Eyetech said they paid most of the "next" production run in advance. Could be true.
But as there was no "next" production run they would of course have been refunded.

You know, Apple was to small fish for IBM to take care of. And they've used at least 1 mil. chips per year. How many Eyetech could order? 20? 50?
