@tommysammy

It took us 10 pages of speculating to find that one slide in one presentation, you know quite as much as we do. All we had were the letters Cyr in the pictures on the first page of this thread.

Cyrus is the name of the new motherboard with Freescale CPU or not?

Highly probably yes.

P3041 could offer similar single core performance as PA6T (except AltiVec and FFT of course). It has even 4 cores and many interesting features (GBit LAN, USB2.0, SATA2, PCIe etc.). Most important part - P3041 is cheaper (200 USD in low quanitities), still available and pin compatible with faster 64bit SoCs from Freescale (P5010/5020 and probably also new P5040).

I do not much know about motherboards, but would it be
possible to make 1 motherboard and solder different
versions of the same CPU on it, like pavlor says here?

I hope that for future machines, A-EON will carefully consider:

- price: hopefully far better than X1000 (otherwise it makes no sense, I guess)
- share components with Nemo X1000's board, to re-use the same drivers
- AmigaOS 4.x port should be available as stable with the machine (this belongs to Hyperion...)

The P3041 includes P4 platform features such as the three-level cache hierarchy for low latencies, hardware hypervisor for robust virtualization support, data path acceleration architecture (DPAA) for offloading packet handling tasks from the core and the CoreNet switch fabric which eliminates internal bottlenecks. This enables architectural compatibility from the P3041 to the P4 platform and also to the P5 platform, which uses the same architecture. P3041 is pin compatible with P4040, P4080, P5010, and P5020.

I understand it will be not that hard to use same (or slightly modiffied) board for all P3/P4/P5 CPUs. But I´m no IT expert.

You took a potshot at him, turns out he could be right. You seem to be an intellegent guy to me, why slam someone you don't know personally? We keep talking about getting alone in the forums, how about we actually start.

@pavlor

There's a single difference as far as I've been able to suss out: number of PCIe controllers (not lanes, ports). Some of them have 3, some have 4. So if you use x8 for graphics, x4 for SB and x4/2/1 for something else you're safe, but more splitting up would only work for certain models (have even forgot which).

Otherwise it seems to be ok.

So with a single pinout you could fit any of 3041, 4040, 4080, 5010 or 5020. Which is pretty awesome, actually.

And btw, this is not IT. It's EE

@sundown

given the question subject i would leave an answer to someone entiteled to it, someone with an actual knowledge and experience, instead putting suppositions up as facts. thats the whole content of my post.

i can guess myself, that cpus with pin compatibility might be helpful to design an universal board to support them.

@olegil

Well that would do it, 1 motherboard with choices of lets say 3 cpu's.

How much for such a motherboard? (i do not know, but i will take a guess)
300 euro's?

Then the cpu's 100, 200 and 300 euro's?

I guess you could even leave out some components for the cheapest
models of the motherboard to even drop the price a bit more.

Just guessing here ofcourse.

I didn't take his reply as "fact", just his opinion, & we're all entitled to that.

I don't wish to drag this thread down with this discussion, if you agree, don't reply, I've said all I wanted to say.

Trevor did announce he was working on a new board & he's well aware the price needs to come down, a cheaper cpu will help. It would make no sense if existing drivers didn't work.

Well, it all depends on that awful monster, the feature creep.

Trying to get Amigans to accept living without this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this and this onboard has driven me absolutely crazy before, so I'm not bothering with that sort of discussion again.

Let's just say, if you limit yourself to CPU, GbE PHY and a southbridge chip and the power regulators and boot flash necessary as an absolute minimum, then have sockets for memory/PCIe and connectors for USB, Ethernet and SATA then it doesn't have to be expensive. The components except CPU are maybe 50 dollars (we're not citizens of Taiwan ), PCB 20 and adding a sensible profit margin takes us up to a few hundred dollars, yes.

But that's not how you need to do to be accepted by Amigans. Here we need to have all sorts of things soldered onboard, to "set us apart" or something.

Well, i guess time has learned us that that does not count.

I have here 3 SE's, and to me those are super-Amiga's,
because i do not care what other OS's use, i look at it
from the Classic perspective.

So if someone could build such a motherboard, we would
have more possibilities to let others (not specific amigans)
to test and develop on the system. Even computer hobbyist's
like myself can assemble a tower with some hardware.

What a great way to look at it! I'm going with that too.

Regarding Trevor's presentation at Amiwest;
He was mysterious about the puzzle at 17:30, has anyone put this together to see what's there?
Is a good quality image available of the puzzle so I can have a look?
