@jtsiren

Im runing 2.4 aswel and havent experienced any problems yet.

I wonder what it is thats causing the problems as it doesnt appear to be tied to a specific console.

Im so glad that it hasnt effected me as I havent backed up my PS3 ever

@ jtsiren

Glad it worked for you and that you're happy with your system.

So for on NeoGaf, 600 people claim they didn't experience the issue, 2 people claimed they had to reformat the harddrive. So if representative and true about 0.3 % of people who updated their system had this issue.

On another forum I asked this question, a little short of 50 responders said they didn't suffer this issue.

@MikeB

I checked a swedish forum aswell.. It seems none has had grave issues.
A couple say they had experienced some lagging or slowdowns but not the
locking and corruption of harddrive data.

It seems 2-3 people in the whole world have had this problem!!!??!!!
Even though I didn't have time to download it before it went offline I appriciate
Sony for taking it off and check if there really is cause for concern.

My guess is some kind of harddrive problem rather than firmware. Something
did get corrupt and probably would have anyway, it was just a matter of time.

@Tomas

I got it from here.

Firmware 2.40

I can confirm it IS correct and works fine! I have installed it myself.

Put the file in this path "PS3/UPDATE/" with the filename "PS3UPDAT.PUP"
on a CD-ROM and do a system update via storage media. It will find it
automatically. It will work from a USB stick also of course.

That would probably kill my warranty if something happened during the upgrade.

Received my DS3 controller this moring and I must say that it feels much better than the Sixaxis controller.

Not only is is nice and "heavy" it feels sturdier and the rumble feels more refined than a DS2.

Only a few of the games I have support it so far, just really waiting for an Update for CoD4.

Just wish we hadn't had to wait so long for it to be officialy released in Europe.

No it wouldn't. You're allowed to upgrade through download with a PC.
playstation.com even allows you to download the update file.
If something happend you could say you got it from there, it does anyway.
It was available for a while. Enough time for most to get a copy.

But IMO it's less than 0.01% chance of anything bad happening.

There are also more costs involved for Sony, different headquarters and local (native languaged) support teams. Native languages implemented into their games (something Microsoft doesn't invest on).

Food for thought:

US pricing excluding taxes:

XBox 360 (20 GB model) $349.99
PS3 (40 GB model) $399.99
Nintendo Wii $249.99

European pricing including taxes.

XBox 360 (20 GB model) 269 Euro (recent price cut, still being outsold by PS3 in Europe)
PS3 (40 GB model) 399 Euro
Nintendo Wii 249 Euro

Note that local taxes are much higher in Europe than in the US.

The US dollar is very weak, for example the Wii is very hard to find in the US. For Nintendo Europe seems more profitable, my city is currently overstocked, all shops have massive amounts of Wiis.

My local Media Markt store:

Same stack different angle:

Wii Display setup:

I also think Nintendo shipped huge amounts to beef up their June fiscal results.

Yes that is another thing that also gets me mad. Europe is supposedly Sonys most Loyal market (possibly alos its largest?) and yet we seem to be second best with everything. We pay more and wait longer for the Hardware/Software.

But atleast we do get it in the end, beter late than never.

Most people here want games to be in english here and Sony never ever released any Norwegian games on the ps2 other than buzz. We got games later back then as well and it was still way more expensive than USA or Asia. I can understand it taking a little longer for countries where dubbing is common, but here we dont dub so i dont see why we have to wait for the dubbing countries.

Many 360 games allow you to choose a language.

The console itself -- english, spanish, french, italian, german, portugues, Polish, japanese, chinese. And couple I don't recognize Russian and Korean perhaps?

Ninja Gaiden 2 , for example, a game with japanese charactersand english subtitles. One can have english, french, german, italian, spanish, japanese, chinese, polish or russian.

So clearly the 360 does support many languages. It's likely a question of what the developers choose to support. If you were a developer you'd want to support as many as the markets you're going into.

None of my PS3 games support Finish for example.

@BrianK

Hiring a (cheap) translator isn't the same as hiring local professional voice actors, for example they hired some Dutch celebrities for Heaven Sword and Drake's Fortune.

Microsoft hires cheap Indian support staff for the US who often don't speak proper English. I think they have enough money to more focus on customer care.

@ Tomas

I know one actor who did Dutch voices for Uncharted, Ratchet and Heavenly Sword also performed voice acting for FIFA Street on the PS2.

In any case it's optional and SCEE wants to release games simultaneously for all its regions. Of course I agree localization is far more important for countries such as Spain, France and Germany.

You make it sound like there's no foreign language support. That's not the case. Perhaps some of the games don't have foreign language voice overs and subtitles are a worse option. However, developers CAN do foreign language voiceovers. I believe EA localizes at least Asian voice overs of their games, for example.

And of course some games don't need either -- Gears of War, Crackdown got banned in Germany so no need for either subtitles or voiceovers, for example.

One could argue the pros and cons. Should Microsoft lead up all developers doing voiceovers for all games on their console, as you indicate Sony does. This is market dictatorial which I thought we hated in Microsoft didn't we? Now you criticism them because they allow their developers to localize in whatever manner the developer feels is best for their game and criticism them for being flexible. Hmm, let me guess the only way for Microsoft to 'win' in your eyes is to cease it's existence.

As for the cheap Indian support staff, yes Microsoft does outsource some support to India. Myself whomever I talked to on my RRoD return had a very good grasp and use of the language. Working with many Indian's I've gotten use to their accents and the person on the other end cleary didn't match their accents. Perhaps I was lucky.

I do agree Microsoft needs more localized support. Email support is great but when someone from Australia needs to phone the USA for a console exchange and pay high international calling rates that just sucks.

Sony to be releasing 2.41 midweek after numerous (you know, 2 360 fanboys) complaints of systems locking up.

Remember, there is no problem.
There was never a problem.
Anyone who told you there was a problem is a 360 fanboy...

I went to 3 stores in the past week looking for Mario Kart Wii and none had them. Sold out... Picked up Game Party, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl instead.

Nintendo seems to be shipping more units of everything to Europe because of the weakening dollar...
