Next week's E3 should be exciting.

http://kotaku.com/5556874/rumor-3ds-close-to-360-ps3-graphics

The 3DS is running NVIDIA's Terga2 cpu. It's multi-core and has a built-in gpu. It can also run the Unreal 3 engine.

Yes, a handheld more powerful than the Wii. Hmmm... Makes you wonder what they have up their sleeve for their next console...

@Lou

I don't think it will be as powerful as a PS3. Why would it need to be? Nintendo style (cartoony) gaming IMO doesn't need to be, especially for a handheld.

I think it's more likely the PSP2 can measure itself with the home systems considering it only has to render in lower resolutions suitable for a handheld, else you would need a magnifying glass or something to appreciate the detail and effects, same goes for audio, stereo sound should be good enough at this point (not really a need for surround audio).

I am however excited about the rumoured 3D display, looking forward to see how well it's implemented.

Same source also claims the 3DS won't use the Nvidia Tegra chip.

Yes, I read that as well, but you can't believe everything you read.
The Terga2 is what makes sense...if not Terga3. It's already been shown to run the Unreal engine.

http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2009/10/13/nvidia-tegra-wins-contract-for-next-gen-nintendo-ds.aspx

Currently, we have no information what exact chip is being used [just that nVidia won the contract], but with the debut set for February 2010, the second generation of Tegra chips could make an excellent base [to be launched at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona].
The question of power consumption and performance is quite an interesting one. Gen2 Tegra offers quite a graphics punch;GeForce 9 based hardware [CUDA-enabled design] should offer immense experience on small screens - we see no reason why you could not have 4x Anti-Aliasing and 8x Anisotropic filtering on a dual-screen system.

So it is a fact that NVIDIA is supplying the cpu, but Nintendo always asks for customizations so it may not end up being called a 'Terga'-brand but still use the technology.

Crysis 2 gameplay footage:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvtn-01R-6M

My take: This looks like what Resistance 2 should have been like. However it also looks like Killzone 3 is going to take a dump on this from with regard to graphics and immersion. To be honest Killzone 2 looks better to me than this, more shiney weapony, better effects, better animations, better art direction, etc.

I expected a bit more from Crytek. Still looking forward to give this game a try.

The engine was announced for the 360 too. IMO quite remarkable to see a 2010/2011 game on the PC and the 360 hardware was released in 2005.

Sure, you are probably referring to my PSX Quake 2 port comment.

But do note, Quake 2 was released during the PC gaming hights, it was designed as an exclusive. Crysis 2's main target is the consoles (with XBox 360 as main lead), IMO that's something quite different.

IGN: "I have to give it to PS. It just has the authentic feel and speed of the PC Quake II"

Keeping the above in mind, this accomplishment seems relatively more impressive to me. I bought a freaky expensive pentium PC to be able to play the original Quake 1 years after the original Playstation launched.

See and Quake 1 was playable on the Amiga. I blame MikeB for personally tanking the Amiga marketplace.

Well, I was always for using the competition to the Amiga community's advantage. For example we can learn a lot from Windows,,,,, how stuff shouldn't be done, understand that some things the Amiga did was special.

I also used my PCs for Linux, UAE, BeOS, QNX, Amithlon, AmigaXL, etc.

In the PS2 case a game was modified to play a 3 year old game. Crysis 2 is relativerly more impressive to me. Not only is a 5 year old console able to play a future game. It's grown to the point that it's to be considered as part of the gaming ecosystem. In the case of Quake II the PS2 was an after thought. The Quake example was a redo to reach into another market. Nothing really new here we saw this with Pac-Man and the Atari 2600, for one old example. The Crysis2 example is due to the market itself being strong enough to warrant equal consideration. In the case of Crysis 2 the 360 is now a forethought. Gaming is growing up.

"Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV has now sold over 17 million units worldwide, as revealed in a recent financial call.

The last recorded sales were in March, at which point the game had sold over 15 million, therefore it seems that it has managed to shift another two million in just three months.

Grand Theft Auto 4 is out now for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC."

Interesting, the PS3 version did still make it into the top 30 for the first quarter of 2010 in Europe according to Nintendo.

@MikeB

According to Nintendo?

PC Vesion launched in Dec 2008.
There was a patch to the PS3 version in March 2010.

Too bad DRM killed the PC version... It's probably playable now as everyone's gotten past Vista SP1. It does have improved graphics over the console versions.

DLC has given this game legs compared to most HD console titles.
In the end you pay something like $100 for the game. This is why I pass on the 'hd' experience this gen.

...or atleast wait until the main game is discounted to $30 then get that and the DLC...

I played Monster Hunter 3 last night and finally completed my first 'capture' quest. After 28 hours of melee armor and weapons, I decided to try out a gunner set and finally started to like it as well. I got 32 hours into the game and I'm only half way through the single player content...ah the joy of high quality 'sd' games...

In their fiscal year report they highlighted European software sales based on GfK data.

The PC version launched 2nd of December 2008 for North America, 3rd of December 2008 for Europe.

3DS, maybe also PSP2.

This should be one of the best E3s for Sony yet. I anticipate more info on Motorstorm 3, Resistance 3, Killzone 3, Infamous 2, The Last Guardian, new Ape Escape, LittleBigPlanet 2, Gran Turismo 5, 3D gaming and Playstation Move.

Maybe a the new Twisted Metal, Rockstar exclusives and maybe a few suprises!

Really what would E3 be without some talk about Gran Turismo 5. It's the Duke Nukem Forever of racing sims.

PSP2 and 3DS will be interesting to see. IMO portable gaming will be phone based in the future. This battle is about to get heavy.

Seeing what more Natal and Wand bring to the table will be of interest to many.

Do you think Sony might have PlayTV2 ready for the US?

The other Sony event I want to see is their 3rd attempt at tying together all their products into a distribution system. It sounds good in theory, but can they make it happen this time?

(edit) In events related to TV. Reuters is reporting Hulu will come to the 360, and iPad. It'll be interesting to see if this can compete or compliment NetFlix. The plus of Hulu is one can get shows before they're released to DVD.

Not really, it took 3 years between Halo 2 and Halo 3 without many differences.

The jump from PS2 to PS3 is very big techically and you should see a huge jump in the series technically. We already knew they are perfectionists, so it's not strange the development takes time. I think it's a better approach, I think it's would have been better if Halo 3 would have been more ambitious as well.

I mean good things shouldn't be rushed.

Re: E3

I'm looking forward to some world-class RPG's on the Wii: Xenoblade an The Last Story. The Last Story is from the original creator of the Final Fantasy (get it - Last Story) series...

Rumor has if, Nintendo might include 3G or 4G with the 3DS so that it's always online...rather than depend on wi-fi.

I think since Nintendo's made so much money off of the DS/Wii that they are finally investing in technology in developing the 3DS and Wii successor.
