That is great ! Can I ask how old she is ?

Personally I think twice before giving money to "humanitarian Associations"... For the past 10 years (certainly more) in Europe (but likely outside Europe as well), those organisations have been involved in various scandals (I remember especially a Cancer Research Association) using most of the money received for their own purposes (Expansive cars with "chauffeur" for example)... And then we you go to them with a "humanitarian project" they just don't want to listen...

Now if there could be guarantees than at least 99% of the money sent, go directly to the people in need...

Now what I did a few times is to send food/clothes to the Red Cross and some other organisations.

Hannah was shrewed enough to give directly to the relief fund - but I see your point -
same reason why I wont give a begger money, but will buy them food, or a drink. Check my sig - look at the killinig with kindness link. I wont give to Oxfam as I read somewhere that they only give 1p in every £1 - the 99p is swallowed up by them in admin. Thats not a charity - thats a business. I will give to the salvation army as I have witnessed the good work they do with my own eyes.

There's a few beggars around in Minneapolis. Typically they're always nice and thank me when I give food. Typically it's vegetables. But, I'd venture 60-70% of the time I see the head of broccoli on the side of the road the next day. I now carry around fast food gift certificates. Sure, they can still sell/trade them but really isn't that true about the head of broccoli too.

My used stuff always goes to Salvation Army for their picking over first. But, even that has been frustrating. I try to be good and pick out clothes with holes and stains. Last time I was there they asked if I had washed them. I said yes about 3-6 months ago they said they wouldn't take them unless they were cleaned recently. Unfortunately, those went directly into the trash. They weren't worn between washing and giving to them. So now I'm even questioning that approach.

@ thread ..

Now 120K

From what I've heard on the radio, This area has never seen or experienced a Tsunami, neither have I but at least WE received education on them.

For example... I heard that when the sea rushed OUTwards from the beach (as it does when a Tsunami is inbound) people actually ran out onto the empty deep sea bed !!

People also didnt understand what a Tsunami was went out onto the beach to have a look what it was !!

9 on the Richter scale must rank as one of the most powerful quakes the modern world has ever seen. I just heard that a young couple whose wedding I filmed last month were out there still. Don't know whether they are ok or not.

bobson .. That bride looked a clone of Jill ( 22 years ago)- Shook me to the core when I saw her.. So very hard to act "Normal" around her !!

Our local newspaper has THIS article in it.. This bloke is actually my Moms old boss at Greenwoods Barristers.

@Thread

Estimated 5,000,000 people who will have impacts to their food and water supply.

Logistics for aid is going to reach nightmare stage.

On the good side...
~5 years ago a single disaster in a country would take about a month to fully assess.
~3 years ago a single disaster in a country would take about a week to fully assess.

Today?
12 countries and the assessment is comfortable enough for immediate action and supposedly near completion. A big boo to those Luddites who say we don't need computers! (Of course they aren't reading this...)

Yes, the Internet again proved it's superiority over telephones.

About the disaster, I fear it's going to reach 150000 dead people now.

As a society, we are so wealthy that even beggars can be choosers.

Consider the ancient Roman office of Caesar. In that day, the emperor of Rome was the most powerful man in the world. Or at least the world known to Rome. And yet, though his every wish was carried out, he could not have used a single aspirin tablet, nor a simple book of paper matches. Such a treasure could not be hand at any price in his day, yet in our world, matchbooks litter our streets.

@Quixote

Thank you.

Although unconfirmed I have heard figures as high as 125,000 now.

I work with several former members of the armed forces, and after having viewed the flash animation on MSNBC one of them commented that it looked ?like a shaped charge?. The animation surprised me as well. I would have expected the waves to be more circular, but this looked like a bar with the bulk of the damage specifically targeted. Is there anyone here who can authoritatively comment on the fluid dynamics/fluid mechanics involved?

I think I'm going to try to work on some music. Anyone else? Maybe we can come up with a ?special collection? of sorts.

I can't tell you how often I have tried to point this out to people.
As an artist I have a career that fluctuates constantly. So, I am often "out of work". (meaning no money is coming in. I still do plenty of work).
But I am aware that dispite that inconvenience, I still have a working toilet and shower. 2 things I wouldn't want to be without! And, yes, even the poorest of us are far "richer" than all the royality that ever lived. I have vitamines, fleece clothing, electricity, and most important access to porn on the internet. (ok, that was a joke).

I sometimes have looked at the homeless person rooting around in garbage and thought there is a fine line between me and him - next month i could easily be homeless.

So, i never take anything for granted.

Hi Billsey,

Thing is, light gets blocked by an object, while with water, a volume of matter has increased in height (has been displaced) above a standard level, and has to "drop" back down, and it keeps "dropping" away from where it was pushed from. So, when it gets to the end of the widest part of the island from the direction it came from, at that point, it can "drop" behind the island, as well. Anyway, that's the way I interpret it.

@Atheist

Light is also a wave. I suggest the both of you take a physics class. Sheesh.

Google for "light diffraction". Example hit here

Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.
