| OK, below is an exchange of emails between me and 'my' Professor...
Quote:
Dear Professor,
Following on from our brief chat just before I had left for India, what are the chances of CTR paying for a single development kit (as it seems Div. of Engineering are not too interested in helping me out)? Even with one kit, I believe it would make a great initial start, as I will be then in a position to set up a number of regular PC Linux boxes as cross-compilers, after which the resulting executables can be tested on the actual Amiga development system. This way, any number of final year students could be given these software-based projects, even though we would only have one development kit.
Have a think about it, and do let me know. Hope you have a happy answer for me!
Regards, Piyush

Thanks for the email Prof. I believe a complete configured kit with all the hardware and software required to get us on the road should come in at under £900.

Thanks for the kind wishes for my wedding. I am indeed back, and receiving the go ahead from the Professor is the best wedding gift I could've hoped for!
@nicholas I'm not the same guy, but yeah the name is not very common at all, even in India. I'm sure the Piyush you know must've been damn good looking too though...
BTW, I shall put pictures of the wedding up very soon! |

Thanks!
Now onto the next step: where to actually buy a uA1-C? From all the recent threads it seems they are not really easily available :(
It would be a real shame, if after all my efforts of trying to get my department to agree, I can't even get hold of an AmigaOne! |

I don't know where is your university, but Relec in Switzerland, have complete microA1 system in stock for 600-700 £ (everything but the monitor): i've just buy them one and they are very nice :)

Maybe you should contact Eyetech directly? Since you're going to be using this for development and educational work, maybe they'll be able to work out a deal for you and the students?
This is great news - I congratulate you sir! _________________ After a decade away from the scene, I am back! |

That is a good suggestion. I shall draft an email to them when I get back home tonight. I don't really care if I (my dept) has to pay full price as I think our friends at Eyetech need the money. I just need a computer to get this project on the road. Damn, am I EXCITED!!!

Hi,
Type "www.relec.ch" into the google search box using IBrowse.(demo will work) You will be presented with the option to translate the document into english.
Best Wishes, #6

OMG...It's so obvious... I have an idea....
Perhaps you could develop the course so that it can be used to teach newbies in the Amiga community.
Your course notes could form the basis of an Amiga Education Program. Perhaps it could be an online school of some sort. Maybe you could develop it into an Amiga Dev Certification covering everything from the Amiga Architecture, C/C++ development, porting, application and games production. You could assign different useful end of course projects to pass. Perhaps Hyperion or AmigaInc could make it official.
Failing that you could always release it as a book or e-book. We're in dire need of an Amiga development book that goes further than the SDK.
Ok. Going back to my happy place now. _________________ Leo Nigro, CTO Commodore USA, LLC Opinions expressed are my own and not those of C= USA. Commodore/AMIGA "Beautiful, High-Performance, Home Computers for Creativity and Entertainment." |

STEADY ON!
I don't even know how to program for OS4 myself! This is basically going to be a learning experience for myself as well as my students. My C/C++ course basically covers all the basics - nothing system specific. I.e. no graphics/GUIs etc. I am however planning to include a few lectures on this (geared towards Linux programming) this year, which will then provide a stepping stone towards the final year programming projects.
You never know what it could turn into. Maybe the Amiga projects could be such a great success, that in future years, it's actually Amiga programming that is taught in my course, supported by a lab full of AmigaOne's, and...
But let's be realistic.
It's gonna be a slow start, but I'm prepared to put in the work, and I shall make sure my students do too! |
