@TheDaddy, ChrisH et al.

I wanted a stylish computer, not another PC-looking big-cased machine that blocks space under my desk. I'd be very sad if new OS4-capable hardware is only available with bigger form factors.

@Trixie

...and I'm not sure how going bigger fits with this either:

@number6

yep, you are totally right.

@all

please consider these points:

1. I think SAM Flex maybe sold a bit better, was that everybody wanted to have the best available. If you waited for ages for a new HW you donnot want to miss out on any feature.

2. Seen over long term, I think SAM itx is the better choice, because it enables you to design a compact and good looking computer, which then might convince old Amigausers or non Amigausers more than a big Desktop Computer.

3. If X1000 becomes reallity, it will be a desktop/tower anyway. So where is the A1200 equivallent then ? If X1000 comes, I donnot see many arguments for SAM flex really (at least in the Amiga market existing at the moment).

4. Also depends on other markets ACube has, what about the "industrial customers" ? What do they want ?

My personal opionion is this:

We as company actually think buying a second SAM itx for our customer Foyer/showroom/waiting area. We already had the SAM running down there for a week or so, and it was really appreciated. The SAM comes in stylish looking PSILE Case, and customers look at our company presentation via Hollywood, plus they use it for surfing the net... (which is not perfect yet, because OWB is not as stable as it should).
Only problem is, I miss it on my desk...

So, please keep producing Amigas/SAMs with the smallest possible form factor !

greetings

@hunk

You backup your claim by pointing to another forum where you started a thread with the same topic?!

As long as there is no official statement from Acube I suggest to stop spreading FUD.

Exactly. Most people already have big computers; if the new Amigas are small, silent and stylish (so they look more like a piece of furniture) there'll be a greater chance that they infiltrate people's homes and bring in new users

Given that "hunk" only joined 5-Jan-2010, I'm not sure his claim has much credibility... (He may be right, but it's difficult to believe such a big claim when it comes from someone new & unknown.)

edit: On the other side, with the X1000 coming soon, it might make sense for ACube to go from two product lines down to one. If they expect reduced sales, then it's easier to keep one line being manufactured rather than two. And if they have to cut one line, then the more limited one seems the "logical choice".

@hunk

you're right, after 3 years, the Sam440ep mini-itx version is out of production, but there are still (few) boards available from resellers and directly from us the 600 mhz version.

We can still produce it if we receive a bulk order of at least 30-50 boards.

We're currently putting our resources producing Sam-flex, EyeMotion and the NAS.

Announcing a more powerful product before it was ready would be the perfect way to see kill sales in the current product, and so killing revenue that they might have been relying on to finish the new product. So, do you *really* want them to do that?

That said, IMHO there is no space for more than about two Amiga motherboards in the current market (one for the "low end" and one for the "high end").

@m3x
Thanks for the confirmation!

@hunk
That last post really didn't do anything to enhance your credibility! Thankfully m3x cleared things up.

@ChrisH

naturally mine was a provocation
I know tha market rules

Form the high and low end Amiga hw I can say only that unfortunately:

1 - X1000 maybe will be REALLY too expensive for me(and much other ppls...)

2 - Current SAM wasnt entry level for me...my OLD A1SE was really faster than any sam board and the sata/usb2 connectors on board dont justify the expense...and also the difference of power from X1000 dont justify that board as Amiga low end imho...was really too low end...we need at least a board based on AMCC460 ant 1,2 better 1,5 GHz that maybe was 1/3 or 1/4 of the X1000 power(so low-end) with a decent gfx chip on board (with at least 128MB gfx ram) and and a pci(for any board someone want to put in...better if also the PCIe slot supported from AMCC460 too was present...

all in mini-itx form factor and no flex solution since we have the X1000 and that was an antry-level board...

That's only my personal point of view naturally...

@m3x

It's a shame, as I have said before, the mini-itx makes more sense...maybe your next one

Any ideas regarding the backplate, any hardware expansion boards for the SAM (the FPGA on it?) on the horizon?

@m3x

well... right. At the moment this is nothing to worry about. As long as production can restart fast enough. I guess once we have high end desktop, hopefully our user base grows, because of general puplic attention. As more people kick in, some of them will probably ask about "Design Amigas" or "furniture Amigas". Or small Laptop Amigas. If you can restart production fast enough, that's fine.

Two more questions:
What makes you think SAM Flex sells better now and in the future (if X1000 exists) ?

BTW what about this SAM AMIGA Laptop thread:
AW Forum SAM - Laptop Poll

This is a sort of "bulk order" of 174 units isn't it ?

I would prefer a mini-itx form factor without the onboard gfx chip, a more powerful cpu and one PCI Express slot X16 for a graphics card.

Nice

I'm not surprised in the slightest; in fact I was surprised to see it stay in production after they released the Flex.

The more interesting question (which nobody seems to be asking!), is how the SAM (Flex) sales will be effected by this X1000 announcement?

There's something 'funny' going on here. Logically ACube would be producing the X1000 and working under the direction of Hyperion (eg the would continue to be partners). It would also be logical for ACube to announce this new hardware only when it was ready (or almost ready) for retail, to announce it early would effectively kill the sales of the only existing OS4.x hardware line (the SAM).

As we all know, this is not what's happened. I can only assume that ACube will not be involved in the sales of the X1000 and are effectively no longer in partnership with Hyperion. Maybe the title of this thread should instead read 'SAM Flex will also be out of Production soon'

@NovaCoder

Surely ACube can remain in partnership with Hyperion to provide "entry-level" hardware, while someone else provides the "higher-level" hardware? Is there any reason why there can't be two or more suppliers of differently-aimed products?

@hunk

Why bad?

It was a lowest level Miggy at the time,
with bugs in OS 4.1 and less expandable,
as well with nice Radeon 9000 but 64MB limit ...
