Maybe the best is the cheapest?
Given you are running on a desktop (not that it matters) and MoL would be emulating a desktop machine I'd go for the desktop version.
I run 10.4.11 on a G3 iBook 500 and it is usable. Just slow at times. And the network bugs are annoying. I have to load up the network pane, stop it telling me something changed the configuration, even if it hadn't. And then load and quit Safari then load again! Otherise it keeps looking for the internet on the HD! You'd think they would have fixed the bugs but no left it in Tiger.
You can update it but best to have last version if you are buying. Any earlier 10.4 for sale cheaper? Last edited by Hypex on 30-May-2013 at 03:29 AM.

As I found out. But then if you have 10.5 why would you want to run old Mac apps? I don't anymore.
MoL can be configured for OS9 anyway so not a problem I see. |

@hypex yeah it can be done with sheepshaver, but i recon classic is cooler, a little more intergrated with the system..a little bit more seamless. personally i want to run mol on my 460, but give 7.5.5 a go.... fastest ppc 7.5.5 ran on was around 100mh... 1.1gh will be breakneck quick!
and running a full bott of 9.2 is way more compatible than classic.
ah.. look forward till i can get a job and a radeon card.....

| Last commits to the project was 2011-09-13 http://sourceforge.net/p/mac-on-linux/code/commit_browser which compiled easily enough as long as you don't consider trying to update the kernel module..
I got it running on a powerbook under squeeze and kernel 3.2.x using KVM, however i read that using the KVM only osx was supported. i also thought that the last supported os was 10.3 on MOL?
Anyway 10.3. was fast enough, though it ran in g3 mode as far as i could tell, if anyone could specify how i would go about getting g4 mode i would be most thankful. _________________ C= Amiga addict ,,, (Oo) ⎛☮ໄ ﮑὠՀ Couldn't care less what other people think, seeing that there's concrete evidence they don't. |

Damn it. You make it sound so easy! I got the latest source on my A1 Debian, running kernel 2.6.32, using svn as the last archive is way out of date. I downloaded this and that and 2.6.32 souces and headers and can't get the damn thing to compile! How did you do it?
I keep getting stuck on certain errors, which I google, and the answer is always a patch file for the Makefile. However it doesn't give many deatails and when I examine all the Makefiles that looks like it nothing relevant shows up!
Do you have an updated source you could share! It's driving me nuts!
BTW on A1 G4 crashes regardless but it's enabled in the config file, mol.rc IIRC. One of the main ones in /etc/mol/*. |

Hehe, not at home atm but im pretty sure i just did this: make distclean make menuconfig, deselsect the MOL module, seems last working build of that was for .28? Remember to modprobe kvm And since your on an amigaone select amigaone cache coherency fix.
I can check later of course, but im _pretty_ sure i didnt change anything in the sources. _________________ C= Amiga addict ,,, (Oo) ⎛☮ໄ ﮑὠՀ Couldn't care less what other people think, seeing that there's concrete evidence they don't. |

No problem.
Ran out of space transferring, fixed now... Doing something really quick at 3 am without double checking is apparently not the way the. Hope it works! Btw, if you figure out how to enter the OF command line can you give me a shout? Last edited by mike on 05-Jun-2013 at 09:37 PM.

I'd need mol kernel modules for my kernel in order to do somnething useful. Still working on it.
I've never seen where to enter the OF command line But there are settings for OF trees and config.molrc.post does contain a "cmdline" setting that may do what you need.
BTW, 10.4 works. I don't know if 10.5 does. But I've never figured out networking. OSX has IP address, Linux has UP address, OSX still has no internet! Last edited by Hypex on 11-Jun-2013 at 05:02 PM.

Somehow I got network working. Perhaps it did work with some settings after a reboot was needed but it's stuck at least now. I also installed some dhcp software prior as stated in the Ubuntu guide. Wanted to update to 10.4.11 but only have 280MB of space. Argh!
BTW 10.5 CD is recognised by OSX and the CD can boot. Haven't tried to install yet. Don't think I've enough space. Last edited by Hypex on 13-Jun-2013 at 09:25 AM.

I recompiled the 2.6.32 kernel on my A1SE. I'll give MoL with KVM a try, when I have access to the machine again._________________ A1SE: G3@600MHz, 2GB, 1GBit network card A1XE: G4@933MHz, 2GB, refitted AC'97 codec microA1: G3@800MHz, 1GB

It was a few years ago, but recall my working setup was like this: Linux 192.168.0.0/24 OSX 192.168.1.0/24
Then configure OSX to be routed out from the same inteface Linux uses (eth0 in my case) So default gateway on OSX points to Linux and gets to Internet that way.

I seem to recall being able to compile the MOL kernel for 2.6.18 under Lenny. But you have a version you compiled for the AmigaOne using kernel 2.6.32? Is that available anywhere?
Thanks,

| If any version of mol is available for the AmigaOne I am interested as well.
A link for the prgxmac iso, mentioned on other topic would be great as well.
Yes this last one goes to Scott.
Thanks :) Last edited by Morphix on 31-Mar-2014 at 01:16 AM.

Here's the link for the PegXMac ISO....
PegXMac-Download
So far no success with it.
But I am trying to recall how to build a new MOL kernel...I did it last year...
Here's what I've done so far....
1) Install Lenny on a partition. Not as easy as it sounds. This involves these steps: a) download Hypex's Etch installer. b) Install Etch c) do apt-get upgrade / apt-get update to install Lenny, using the proper sources-list of course. 2) Once you have Lenny installed, you need to ensure you have a kernel that will work both with Lenny and MOL, which ,IIRC requires rebuilding the MOL sources for kernel 2.6.18. 3) So I went and downloaded the 2.6.18 kernel.deb from sourceforge and did a dpkg --install of the .deb file, then a depmod. I added and entry to my a1boot.conf to boot my Lenny partition with the 2.6.18 kernel image. Hurray, it works!
.. this is where things get fuzzy...Hypex. Geri...you can certainly remind me of the exact steps necessary (yes, I did go through the hundreds of messages in the Etch Installer thread...took some notes, but I didn't post all the details in that thread....sadly) So here is what I think I need to do next..please correct as necessary
1) download and do a dpkg --install of the MOL kernel and kernel sources package deb files. They are on sourceforge named: mol_0.9.72-2_powerpc.deb and mol-kmods_0.9.72-2_powerpc.deb
2) depmod
3) get 2.6.18 kernel sources .deb and do a dpkg --install
4) apt-get install gcc
5) apt-get install initramfs-tools
6) set up the correct list of modules in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
7) change MODULES parameter in /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf to MODULES=list
8) update initramfs -c -k 2.6.18-whatevername (don't recall full kernel sources name)
9) cd to the /etc/modules/mol sources directory
10) mkimage -A ppc -o Linux -T multi -C none -a 0x1000000 -e 0x10000f00 -n "Debian Linux 5.0" -d cuImage.amigaone.img-2.6.18 boot.image-2.6.18
11) Once generated put the new kernel image in the boot partition /boot directory
12) update a1boot.conf to use the new kernel just generated
13) reboot using the new kernel. Open a shell in Lenny....
14) Then, the command "startmol --test" should work (may have to run mol-config or whatever it is called first). Also, need to be sure you have a partition ready for MACOS and a MAC Tiger 10.4 DVD (or CD?). Then you can do a startmol -x --cdboot to install.
Okay guys, tell me all the stuff I forgot!!! I know there was more...especially with installing the tools and setting up the compiler....
Thanks!

I think you've done enough already. Save yourself some time and goto: http://amigaone-linux.sourceforge.net/download.php
Here you will find a 2.6.18 kernel ready to go. You wil also find MoL for this kernel.
BTW, 2.6.18 AFAIK desn't use an initramfs. It would use a initrd but that doesn't really matter as the UImage is already in the archive. FWIW the load and entry address are actually 0x0, yes zero, would you believe?
You have the OSX booting correct. MOL menu in PegXMac will do this for you. But I found it's good to do it manually from MC (Or MIdnight Commander) as the menu method locks out the keyboard and you can't break it if it goes wrong.
And, one partition for PegXMac loader, another for OSX. |

Okay, finally, after many failed attempts at bidding on EBay for a copy of MAC OSX Tiger 10.4, I finally got one for $41.05. I should have it in a few days.
Now I need a refresher course......
If I get an etch partition set up as a root, with kernel 2.6.18, then all I need to do is download the MOL .deb files (already have them somewhere) and dpkg --install them on my Etch partition right? I don't need to rebuild a new kernel, the existing MOL files from sourceforge already work with kernel 2.6.18.
Am I remembering this right?

Well, first this kernel is small enough so that it can be decompressed within the first 5 MB RAM and secondly it doesn't need a device tree and thus a bootwrapper that would slightly shift the entry address.

Yes, if you use the files I pointed to above. But a Lenny root filesystem will work too (if not better)._________________ A1SE: G3@600MHz, 2GB, 1GBit network card A1XE: G4@933MHz, 2GB, refitted AC'97 codec microA1: G3@800MHz, 1GB
