This is interesting. I was getting the same type of thing from Squeeze on my A1. I loaded up IceWeazel I think it was and the window borders were yellow in parts.

At first I thought it may be bacause my monitor resolution wasn't native. I fixed that manually but it was still there in yellow.

The installer CLI doubling up letters and making it hard to edit is another Debian annoyance.

Common issue. Have tbe same yellow borders on iceweszel and windows in genral -coming and going randomly- on debian @ my Powerbook G4 and I think on my Pegasos 2 as well, hmm I think on Sam as well.

Btw I have a Sam 440ep running debian as well, have installed it many moons ago, ussing the installer and iso from acube's site. I guess this topic carries info about updated kernels, but is it worth the try to go for a new install? I really have not got anything extra on the little Sam, for example graphics card. It has been ages that I have not logged in there, I guess auto updates would work or not? I have ppc repos set as far as I can remember.

@Morphix

Same installers for Sam440ep in the works. I have to test them later.
You Wont need the null modem cable.
The version on Acube's website installs Lenny (Debian 5)
My version installs Wheezy (Debian 7)
Auto updates wont update you from version 5 to version 7 .
You get Iceweasel 17 on Debian and Firefox 25 on Ubuntu.

Any Interest in Ubuntu 12.04 and Debian Wheezy installers for Sam460ex ? .

Installation will need a null modem cable and a terminal program running on a second computer. apart from Installing the Parthenope boot loader and leaving some unpartitioned space on your hard drive the installer will do the rest including setting up the Linux bootstrap with the usual prompts along the way. 3.12 Kernel with Graphics cards up to Radeon HD 4000 series supported

@morpa

It is fun .

Some guide lines for the Sam460ex installer :

Needs a null modem cable and a second computer running a term program.
if using Windows on the second computer Putty seems to be the best option.
In Putty configuration Translation section select Use font encoding for Remote Character set.Serial Speed 115200.
The Installer will set up the bootstrap and modules on the Linux side once the space used for the installation is at the end of the hard drive.so leave at least 20Gb unpartitioned space at the end of the harddrive.Dont leave any area in front of this unpartitioned or the bootstrap installer will not have the correct partition for the installation
Found and fixed the problem why the Acube Debian Sam440ep installer skipped the Swap partition at setup and have included the fix in the partman expert recipe here for this Sam460ex installer.It will set up a very small swap partition .
Select eth0 for the network interface when prompted for that.
With partitioning you get a warning about the partitioner not knowing about the partition type. select yes to continue. Select use largest continuous space for the installation.
When you reach the Install Packages section after the base install
select the two options Install Lubuntu Minimal Installation and Ubuntu Desktop

Is it recommended to install Lubuntu 12.04.3 or Debian 7.2 on a Sam with a Radeon 92XX graphics card?
Could someone post a screenshot of the yellow borders on iceweasel and windows, please?

Why is that? Seems to be a popular Sam thing. So adding this to the boot args won't fix it?

console=tty0

BTW, good work on the installers, even if I haven't a machine to use them on. Do you use a preseed?

@Hypex

Thanks .

The Sam460ex wont display to to the Radeon HD console even with the console=tty0 arg.
There is no problem with the Sam440ep .
I do use preseed . I have embedded the preseed fileand .SH script in the ramdisk as well as the
Kernel.,Modules and Xorg.conf to copy for the installation bootstrap .
I use a modified preseed file based on the one from the Acube Sam440ep install CD.

@SinanG

Radeon HD cards up to the HD4000 series work for the GUI .
The issue here is for text output to the console.
The debian installer uses the text output to the console.
Once Linux is installed by the installer and restarted the GUI becomes active.

The issue with Radeon HD5000 series video cards and up is that they are only supported
by a DRM kernel.DRM kernels will not boot on a Sam460ex for some reason.
Acube would have to find the cause of this problem and do a Linux patch to correct it.
Or if it is problem in the Sam460ex Uboot firmware fix it there.

@Spectre660

That's very useful, thanks. Nicely done. I've been using the same ideas for the A1 Debian installer I was working on. But I find it hard to get info on the preseed options. It is like an autodoc, I've only seen instructions inside an example preseeed file. Right now I'm looking for an option to see inode size but haven't spotted an answer yet.

Lubuntu 13.10 on Sam440ep .
This seems to be the best option.Have also installed full KDE which give plenty of software under Lubuntu. For some reason the Software menus dont show up in KDE when installed after the main Lubuntu install .
