@tlosm

You need to use dos glide, 3dfx drivers, and a build that supports it (main Dosbox branch doesnt). It's pretty easy to apply the diff. to the sources, but it only works against 0.72. The 3dfx emulation is software/cpu driven as well, its not wrapper based.

@tlosm

That last comment makes no sense :) Using vesa vbe on Windows is faster than Windows?
Also how does AROS fit into the equation? You can run the same emulated environment (with VESA vbe .) and AROS vesa is pretty quick as well. However you cut it regardless of what you meant it doesnt make sense :) Or have I misunderstood something?

Nope Fishy , Aros on Qemu with vesa vbe is faster copared with the other video modes on Qemu (ppc)
.. And Aros is more faster and enjoyable in Qemu compared with windows Nt and up :)

probably you didnt good realized that we are with a PPC machine and not X86

Ah sorry, I misunderstood what you was saying. I wasnt really sure, but I thought you was saying vesa vbe drivers under Windows was faster than Windows, which of course makes no sense :)

Do the emulated gfx cards not work with their own specific drivers? The s3 drivers work on Dosbox when running win9x as do the 3dfx (although given early 3dfx werent a standalone card it doesnt influence screenmodes available).

@fishy_fis

Yes but this is Qemu mate not Dosbox :P
I know there is a special build of Dosbox for 3dfx emulation,
i read the documentations and it is using the SDL machine host for make the acceleration of the 3dfx programs:
What it means in performances: the software use less the emulated cpu of dosbox (usually slow compared with the host) and this made really speedy and usable the games under emulation, all this because this applications use the glide wrapped and redirected in SLD of host and this use the video card 3d and accelerations in the gpu of the host machine.

In schemas (host 3d video board)SDL----dosbox----Glide wrapper(guest)

This things was used by OpenGlide in Classic emulation in MacOs X and was really good working.

In any way finally i found a Tiger version that look like working on my G5 soon i will have good classic and fast emulation there :)

I think fishy_fis meant CL-GD5446 PCI GFX card emulated by QEMU.

ah the cirrus :)
no 3d on it .. only 2d , for sure on Qemu the best is the Vmware SVGAII but on not kvm gave strange colors :P
If in the future Qemu will use the same wrapper thing of Dosbox probably will be good for play 3d games in not kvm systems.

@tlosm

You seem to have misunderstood how the 3dfx emulation works. It doesnt use the host, its completely cpu emulated. Ive ported this to AROS already, so Im pretty familiar with it. Yes it uses sdl, but that in no way offloads resources to the host, its simply the api dosbox uses (even main branch).SDL doesnt even have provision to work that way given that its already reliant on a systems native apis. Opengl can be used through sdl, but even then theres no acceleration, it just uses it for 2d rendering (in regards to dosbox at least). Glide wrappers are for redirecting calls to 3dfx to a systems own 3d system, not guest-host, but rather guest-guest or host-host.

Oky it will means 3dfx games will run slowly compared the software rendering because the extra gpu emultation?
If it is yes this means the glide wrapper of Classic emulation under MacOsX is better compared the DosBox side.

Yeah, that's correct. It's surprisingly reasonable speed wise all things considered, but is slower.
The mac classic wrapper you mention sounds more like a traditional approach though, so there you'll get some decent results Id imagine.

Yes i can confirm :
example on Shapeshaver there is glide emulation.
I make the test of Quake2 in software rendering it is speedy and faster at 1080p with glide emulation it become really really much slower but usable.

On classic it is much much more better , just now im testing it

But Shapeshaver is much much more faster in system operation
