As far as I know, Tolkien also liked Finnish and read even Kalevala. Exactly that phrase doesn't look very much like Finnish but I feel that I must promote our language a little bit ;)

It's actually Sindarin (or Tolkien Elfish) which is, IIRC, modelled after Gaelic.

D'oh! :)

Foolish me. It didn't even occur to me it was a made-up language, it looks damn real. I guess that's what happens when linguists write fantasy fiction! I think of Tolkien Elvish looking like Finnish, but I forgot he made up more than one language. This one looks much more Celtic (although P-Celtic, like Welsh, Breton and Cornish, rather than Gaelic Q-Celtic).

@Rogue

So is there going to be Sindarin language support in OS 4? It would probably look better in an Elvish character set as well. It would be great to support the Elves as they have been left out of all the other operating systems.

Do you think there will be some hidden messages inside OS 4 in Sindarin?

Elvish script requires a special character set and typesetting. It might be possible to write the beleriand mode because that didn't use too many accented characters, though. Otherwise you would end up with accents over letters for vowels, which is a bit beyond what AmigaOS can do ATM

If I tell you, it's not going to be hidden anymore

Hehe, indeed

Well, there are two elvish langauges, Quenya and Sindarin. This sentence was Sindarin, Quenya is more like a elven latin. And you are right, it is modelled after Welsh AFAIK.

@Rogue

There is a program for Windows (Tengwar) with several dictionaries of modern languages and all languages invented by Tolkien for all his elfish, monster people, which is actually a transcriber.
You just type in sentence in your language and the program translate into any language of LOTR.

Tolkien did invent an own language for each people in LOTR and elfish is the most complexe with a true grammar and spelling.

their are many elfish languages and Sindarin and Quenya are the most complexe.
Quenya is the language of the higher elves, much like their is latin to our languages.
Quenya and Sindarin are more familiar with Finish as with any other language (according to my resources from the internet)

I have read a complete book (339 pages) on how to learn Quenya, but still can not read it correctly.

I used the tengwar program (get it here) to translate my wife's and my name to Quenya, so that we got unique wedding rings. (Actually not so unique at all, as my wife's first ring got lost in the Atlantic sea on Tenerifa )
The rings are double rings one made of gold and the inner ring made of silver, with the Quenya names cut out of the golden ring. The silver inner ring has it's outer surface oxidized to black.

the complete design of the rings including the Quenya-fonts (Truetype) was done with PageStream on my Amiga 3000T.

P.S. Edited a typo CAN READ = CAN NOT READ

Hmm... I could to translate it to Quenya... so we would have a unique LOTR AOS4

Hi!

Do you have a link to where I might be able to buy this book? Or if not could you please tell me the ISBN number, title and the author of it?

@Snuden

It is an online document "Quenya Course" which I did print.

Links are here

Link about this "Quenya Course" by Helge K. Fauskanger is here (unfortunately the PDF version has been removed, but download the RTF lessons, import them into any good WP (FinalWriter, Word, Openoffice etc and print it out.)

Link of Helge K. Fauskanger's homepage very well done.

(I like to put that into the context of AmigaOS 4 - I still hope it *will* change the world Although I doubt you could smell it...)

The original group of people that worked on the Amiga, and AOS, didn't know that they were going to change the world, but they DID!!!!!

"I still hope it *will* change the world "

My opinion is that IT WILL!

People have a multi-user OS because they were told they need it, they were TOLD a LOT of things. But, are they better off now with them??

DEFINITELY NOT!

The world ALWAYS HAS needed, a small, fast, easy to use, flexible, multi-tasking, single user OS.*

GIVE THE PEOPLE WWHAT THEY NEED!

AmigaOne! AOS4.0! Sweep aside the imposters!!!!!!!!!!
AOS4.0! Genius Inside!

I still would like a multi-user OS because I like the idea of a shared computer with varying levels of privacy. But I have been using one for four years and have only ever used it as a single-user OS (everybody else in the house is not interested in using computers. )
