They can't even make announcement without lies...
Cloantos 3.X ROMs (v45.061) are not official update? OS3.5 and later 3.9 wasn't official updates of OS3.1? |

RE the checkmark logo, maybe they simply lack the right to use it? |
I doubt it's even a registered mark. And if it's part of a ROM they have the right to use, there shouldn't be a problem.
It has probably more to do with their aim of trying to affiliate their Amigaone/OS4 product with the original 68k Amiga/Workbench. But by changing details of the original to resemble their own new product, instead of the other way around. From a preservators and retro enthusiast Point of View, I must say it's a bit like history revisionism though (which I suppose goes perfectly in line with this press release: "the first official Workbench 3.1 and Kickstart 3.1 updates in over twenty years for Classic Amiga systems", which obviously is nothing but a blatant lie). And by doing that, removing part of the genuine flare in the process. Why didn't they replace the original icons with some icons that mimics the OS4 icon's while they were at it? Etc? I'm sure there are a lot more possible "improvements" they could have done to "version 3.1" if they had tried a bit harder. Maybe included AmiUpdate, so they could push out the "official" MUI5?

that exactly the _closed_ _source_ _mess_ we are facing now due to not having an open codebase, where everyone can contribute. i wonder who next is going to release a concurrent fork? and claim all the others inofficial, including h&p? ainc?Last edited by wawa on 13-Oct-2016 at 11:16 PM. | Could this be Hyperion testing the water to see if it's (commercially) worth them doing bigger AmigaOS3 improvements? (If AmigaKit can write OS3 software, then why not Hyperion?)
Not that I expect rational debate to suddenly descend on this thread... Last edited by ChrisH on 14-Oct-2016 at 12:11 AM.

yes, thats a question. something essential must have been stopping them all these years. hmm, what would that be..

may i quote a former morphos team member, krashan, on mui5 controverse? he said if the sources were open, the best fork would end up being used, while others forgotten. now we have few closed source versions ("forks") of mui with the different incompatible functionality and inconsistent/misleading version numbers + zune. similar situation emerge with the kickstarts. ;) |

I think it's more them taking the opportunity to make some sales from the emulation and FPGA market. Various dealers have been selling ROMs produced under license from Hyperion for some number of years, I think Amigakit/A-EON is responsible for the production since Amigakit were the first dealer I remember selling them. Individual Computers also have a license from Hyperion to bundle 1.3 and 3.1 (soft) ROMs with ACA500 and future accelerators. They also have source access to the IDE driver.
@all
I think the above mentioned should allay any fears some users may have about the legality off this latest development. Cloanto and Hyperion seem to be on pretty good terms too, Cloanto have, what is at the moment, an exclusive deal to digitally distribute OS4.1FE Classic.
The switch to the Boingball logo is simply about bringing branding into line across all their OS and related products. It makes sense for them to use it instead of the tick. The fact that Olaf rendered the logo from the original demo code is a nice tribute to the original team too. |

I think you're on to something. There's absolutely no reason for Hyperion to re-release OS3 unless they're expecting users to buy classic re-makes such as the Vampire, MIST, or MiniMig who are also obsessed about having licensed copies of KS/WB for every Amiga they own.
I don't think much will come of it though. Most users who plan to buy an FPGA system already own a classic Amiga and will just use their existing KS/WB combos.
I still own an A1200 and plan to buy the standalone Vampire when it's released and I have no intention of sending any more money to Hyperion or even Cloanto (I bought copy of Amiga Forever back in 2006). I will do one of the three things below and suspect that most other FPGA buyers will do likewise:
1. Use my existing KS/WB combo that came with my A1200 on my Vampire 2. Use the AROS KS/WB replacements 3. Use pirate copies of KS/WB that anyone can find with a 10 second Google search
I'm not going to even bother with decrypting the ROMS that came with my AF2006 purchase and trying to use them.
Now I expect the arm-chair attorneys who infest this site to run around like their hair is on fire accusing me of crimes against humanity. |

Obsessed? Maybe look it up in a dictionary. Noone owning Minimig or MIST are obsessed over kickstart issues. Besides, this "new" 3.1 fixes nothing, "large" disks and filesystems will still be corrupted with this kickstart - they should be sold with a big fat warning. | Great, i'm currently running pirated 3.1 roms in A500 & A600 but with a cheap alternative like this i can buy them a legal rom and at the same time support future updates for amigaos.

| Thank you Hyperion! Bought both the WB and Kickstart to support further development.
I wonder what direction this new project will take. Hyperion have access to a ton of code that they could integrate if they wanted to. On the other hand, this may be a more "preservation" cause.
But again, thanks a lot Hyperion. Hope to hope see more development.
