| So it sounds like OS 3.1.4 has a heavily updated core system and improved Kickstart modules
But OS 3.9 provides useful utilities like Unarc, Editpad, Genesis TCP/IP stack, music and movie player etc.
Ignoring the 3rd party utilities, I actually think some of the best things in 3.9 were the asynchronous file copying and the DefIcons system. Are these available in 3.1.4? |

I did try that, and used Singapore in my VPN settings. The strange thing is that the total price is the same. From Norway, the price was EUR 23.96 plus VAT at EUR 5.99 = total EUR 29.95 When ordering from Singapore it shows the unit price at EUR 29.95, and zero VAT. |

In Aminet there's a script that copy the necesary files to update 3.9, and only the necesary.
Works fine for me.

Thanks for the tip - looks good.
But I was wondering if 3.1.4 offered things like asynchronous file copy and deficons without the need to install 3.9 at all.

No, it doesn't. AmigaOS 3.1.4 is an update to AmigaOS 3.1 - *NOT* 3.9. So, no AsyncWB or DefIcons.
If you like to have 3.5/3.9 features you have to "merge" the two OS releases somehow. _________________ X1000|II/G4|440ep|2000/060|2000/040|1000 |

On behalf of the developers, could you please stop changing both the license agreement and the contents of the 3.1.4 release. This is unfairly reflecting on them and their abilities, whether you realize it or not.
Thanks.

It seems like another reason to stay well clear of AmigaOS 3.1.4 and wait for the parties involved to stop squabbling before giving any of them our hard earned money

Well, about that...
The copyright text in the AmigaOS 3.1.4 ROM differed markedly from the approved text in the 2016 Hyperion Kickstart 3.1 set, which is why the change had to be made.
We did not notice that the text was different until it was too late to fix it, and by then it was really, really far too late. When you test this software you don't necessarily look at the copyright text, you just assume that it's there and that's it
Why was the copyright text different? When development slowly started to begin again I rolled back the changes I had made to the Kickstart build to the state how things were in 1994. This restored Commodore's original copyright text and it reverted the build process for the workbench.library to use Lattice 'C'. The idea was to start over from a known good point and then solve the problems which prompted the build changes (the copyright text became significantly longer) properly. That was not one of my brighter ideas, since I forgot to bring up the point in time
Why is the copyright text so "fiddly"? There is very little room left in the Amiga 1200 Kickstart ROM, and just about any change you try make to the ROM code will have consequences. The approved 2016 copyright text is longer than the 1994 "AMIGA ROM Operating System and Libraries Copyright © 1985-1993 Commodore-Amiga, Inc. All Rights Reserved.". Not by much, but the 1994 text just about fits snugly into the first 120+ bytes of the ROM image. Make it a little longer and the OS cold start code layout, which must conform to certain fixed constraints, has to be adjusted. This is what made it necessary for the 2016 Kickstart ROM to shuffle the text around a bit, which in turn made exec.library (which contains the cold start code) larger by some 50-60 bytes (if I remember correctly), which then in turn brough the ROM "over budget" in terms of available space. That in turn required that workbench.library in the ROM to be rebuilt using SAS/C.
If all this sounds suspiciously like the story about the straw which broke the camel's back or the old "for want of a nail...", well, it is. "Baking" a new Kickstart ROM is never a straightforward process and "stuff like this" is bound to happen Last edited by olsen on 28-Oct-2018 at 01:25 PM.
