X5000 and 720p videos

Hello,

X5000 with AOS 4.1 update 2 and Radeon HD drivers using Radeon R7 240 strugles to play 720p video using mplayer of Emotion. If audio is disabled it can somehow handle that, but if audio is enabled it slows down a lot.

With mplayer I use Composition, direct rendering.

Is that normal or I can adjust something?

Thanks

I'm sure someone with X5000 will respond, but it might be helpful if you can link to a publically accessible a/v file that exhibits your issues.

As you likely know. things such as encoding method (codec) play a big part in whether a file will play back correctly.

I think I solved that, I set 48000 Hz frequency for unit 0 on ENVY24HT and it started to play almost smoothly.

I've found the version of ffmpeg used as the basis for Emotion sometimes stutters on 720p video with certain audio codecs. I've found disabling frame skipping can help. I also recommend using MickJT-MPlayer with comp_yuv2 as the default decoder, and enabling hard frame dropping.

The good news is that all of this fettling will shortly be no longer necessary. A-EON should be shipping Enhancer Software 2.0 which includes GPU-based video decoding for RadeonRX video cards. With a supported card we'll be able to play 4K video without breaking a sweat.

Will that include RX 5xxx and RX 6xxx (thousands), or only up to RX 5xx (hundreds)?

@eliyahu

I wouldn't hold your breath.
It was due to be released at Xmas and then delayed sightly to let the dust settle on the OS update provided by Hyperion.

April is fast approaching and nothing has been said anywhere recently as far as I am aware.

Cheers

Enhancer Software 2.0 is currently in Release Candidate stage. RC3 was given out to betatesters two weeks ago.

Thanks for the update Ace.
Hopefully the landing from the testing wasn't too brutal.

@Skateman

I saw that yesterday, will be setting the same to my both X5000 Amigas, thank you for tutorial! :)

@ all

I can confirm that that setting 48000 Hz frequency for unit 0 on ENVY24HT solved all issue, 720p worked smoothly with liveforit-mplayerng. After I switched to mplayer-mickjt from OS4DEPOT it even started to play some 1080p without issues.

Waiting for Enhancer Software 2.0 now

Thank you for all

Only Polaris (RX 4xx & 5xx (hundreds)) currently supported .
Everything newer than that is a totally different architecture .

@Spectre660

Southern Islands cards will also be supported and can decode video upto 2K resolution. Matthew Leaman told be about it in a private conversation last February so I'm surprised it hasn't been officially announced. SI cards will be fine for anyone who doesn't have a 4K display. Just sharing this so that people don't buy a new card unnecessarily.

@Rob

I happen to be an A-Eon beta tester .
He used the "RX" prefix.
RX 5000 and RX 6000 series cards are not currently supported with the A-Eon Radeon Drivers . 2D or otherwise.

Radeon SI series cards currently have A-Eon 2D and 3D drivers as do Radeon Polaris (RX400 and RX500) series cards .

Hardware Video acceleration is definitely coming for Polaris based cards starting with Enhancer V2.0 .

Being able to decode and play back 4k means that you can play back a 4K resolution video even if you don't have a 4k monitor .
If your machine can't decode and play back a video in real time it will slow down or freeze if you attempt to play it .

Yes. Polaris support coming very soon.
As Matthew likes to say watch this space.
Can’t comment on Radeon SI support at this point .

Does this mean that there will be full hardware decoder support (UVD) for the SI and Polaris chips? I thought I read something like that but so far I only saw hardware color space conversion. (yuv->rgb).

( Don't shoot me for being ignorant. Trying to catch up after years of absence ).

I'm playing this on my X1000 with MickJT's MPlayer with between 40-60% CPU load.

Well it's not in Enhancer 2.0. I never asked Matthew how far along they were with development when he told me about SI support but power management is now implemented whch he told me needed enabling in order to access the UVD unit.
