Distrowatch has an interesting review of the recent Haiku release.

DistroWatch Weekly, Issue 791, 26 November 2018 -- Haiku R1 Beta1

There are some problems with it, but some good things as well.

Quote:
One of Haiku's best features is that it is fast and responsive. Whether the system is booting, launching programs, browsing the web or displaying a video, the desktop is highly responsive. Everything feels light and reacts almost instantly to input. This is behaviour I usually only see in super light (and minimal) Linux window managers and I really appreciated the how everything happens quickly on Haiku.

This sounds like another OS that I've used.

I tried Haiku once. It worked, and it was fun, but there wasn't much there that I needed. If they have developed POSIX compatibility it would be a big help.

It's really frustrating to look at all these systems (AROS, Haiku, ...) & think, "I could help if only I had time," then to realize you don't have time.

I like it a lot.

It's way more useable for everyday computing than (any) AmigaOS.

Decent Browser, LibreOffice , etc.

Any Amiga emulators for it?

Yes, there is a FS-UAE port in the HaikuDepot package manager. Haven't tried it myself.

Christopher Barnatt has done a nice overview video.

Haiku Alternative Operating System

It would be nice to see AROS get to this level of development.

I visited the Haiku forums to see what the community is like, and that quickly put me off the whole thing. I'm sure there are some good people there, but overall it's not a place I'd want to hang out.

The strength of Amiga is the community -- it's certainly not the hardware or software. Linux had a good community 20+ years ago, and some of the smaller BSDs (not FreeBSD) may still have.

I'd rather not. Imagine, if you will, someone visiting this site for the first time and coming across a thread that's not really representative of the generally good conversation we have here, and then forming a negative option of the entire community based on that one thread. Perhaps that's what happened to me on the Haiku forum.

Intriguing. I decided to go look, clicked on a few threads that interested me, and they seemed civil & even informative. One in particular had to do with how the OS is thoroughly threaded. Go figure.

After reading this thread and not tried Haiku for years I gave it a try. One of my laptops running Lubuntu I installed it. Cleaned the drive. Everything went fine with the installation. Also configuring wi-fi where easy. Fired up the web-browser. First page I went to I got a crash. Had to crash the app.. and then tried youtube. Not working good at all. I got sound but almost never a picture. Also there the browser crashed. Tried some other pages and found out the web-browser was useless. Going down all the time.
I then inserted a usb storage drive to test some videoes with the media player. Nothing happend when I inserted the drive. I then found it and mounted it but I got some error message there too. Tried to upen Teacup 3D, nothing where shown. Totaly useless OS.

AROS or AspireOS is much better than this.

I dunno, while I only duck in and out of the Haiku community, I've never spotted anything like the level of general hatred that, even to this day, still crops up regularly across the Amiga community. It might be quieter here in more recent times, but it's never too far away from the surface.

I had a somewhat better experience, although not perfect. It depends a lot on your hardware. Only Microsoft can support the model of running on almost any hardware, and only because they have such a large percentage of the market -- virtually no-one will release hardware that hasn't been tested with windows.

One thing I did like was the spacial file manager. I don't think this is necessarily better than the more common navigational file manager -- in fact, it's probably not as good for most things -- but as an Amiga user I have become familiar with this type of workflow.

Microsoft still has the monopoly on the OEM PC hardware landscape unfortunately.

As for spatial file management in Haiku's Tracker... I prefer that myself but you can turn on the navigation feature.

@AmigaMac
No monopoly. The hardware (or rather hw standards) MS creates are free to use and the majority of hardware and drivers are done by others.

@Thread
I was impressed by the Specifications of the Bebox and Beos when it came out.
I bought 3.x and 5.x Pro. with the Bebook.
A while back there was a falling out in the Haiku community.
I am not for sure what it was.

@Trekiej

There was a lot of controversy over whether Haiku should have a package manager like Linux. As I recall, there was a guy who ran a community site with forums and a directory of BeOS/Haiku software for download fell out with the developers in a big way over this and left the scene.

I've always been in favour of Mac-style app bundles for regular user applications, and keeping the package manager solely for Unixy server software (like you'd use MacPorts or Brew on a Mac) and system updates, but it doesn't kill Haiku for me. It was much more important that Haiku had a means to update itself so people can start using it seriously. Overall, I think it's a stunning piece of work.
