Yes, thats how it must be done.

A little OT, but what's that about people archiving stuff twice ?
Like a Tar archive Gz'ed...
'blablabla.tar.gz' ?? Or was it the otherway around ?

Anyone any explanation about this

Cheers,

Martin

gzip can only compress one file. tar converts many files into one with no compression.

So you tar your files into one file, then gzip that file.

Simple eh?

@Metalheart

.tar.gz alias .tgz is not archived twice, "tar" is the archive ,
gz is the compresion used,

to unpack tar.gz under linux you simply type

tar -xvzf file.tgz

unarh used on OS4 is stupid when it comes to .tgz files.

I never knew that!

(Of course, it makes you wonder WHY everyone likes gzip!)

@klesterjr

It's a unix/linux standard, tar is original used for backup tapes, and it's not so hard to use under Linux and Unix systems, gui systems like winzip, unarch can't deal whit this. as the file need to decompressed to read the index, you can't get the index of the tar file.

bzip2 gives better compression then gzip,

Rogue, there is a problem with a1ide.device.kmod 51.28, as I describe in the thread "Odd IDE behaviour". Please make sure that this is checked before the release.

It's summer, and as long as the weather is nice I don't need the os4 update, so take your time Hyperion. :)

Win2k/WinXp/OsX/Os9/Morphos/Os3.9 works fine for me in the meanwhile.. :)

Well I can tell you us beta testers are up to 51.40 now so I should imagine "Odd IDE behaviour" will be a thing of the past!

Ah, I hope so!

How about diskboot.kmod? Will it work on HDs with MBR on them?? I had created the MBR using Linux, due to lack of knowledge with the RDB installation, and I'll have to backup the whole hard disk to safely remove the MBR! Backing up about 8-10 GB on CDs...

At the moment I use diskboot.kmod V50.7 (from pre-release) and my installation is Update 2.

I was advised that if my system was stable I did not need to install the UpDate2. Now that UpDate3 is coming out will I need to install UpDate2 to install Update3?

Personally, I would advise you to move up to update 3 if you are having any issues at all. There are some very tricky problems that have been solved which increase system stability. The devs have been very busy tracking down the more difficult issues now that OS4 is at the final stages. You'll also get all the latest extra features which you'll find out about soon enough.

Waiting for the final release is another option but I think if you are planning a trip to Ottawa anyway, update 3 will be well worth your time and effort. Just make sure to backup everything first and don't rush it.

Maybe when we'll land on another galaxy but not before that.
MBR is something from the past. OS4 developers don't have time to support such bad design.
Instead of backing up, get another harddisk. Keep Linux on one of them and install OS4 on teh second.

No, Update 3 will be system components only, no firmware update. A firmware update may come laster as well, though, to cope with a few remaining issues in early startup.

Then what is the minimum version of UBoot required to install update 3? Some people may be holding back on updating their firmware so we really should explicitly note that.

I thought I did answer that already. No, you cannot skip Update 2. You should have installed update 2 anyway. Any warning like "if your system is stable" (if it comes from me) always aims at installing firmware updates.

No, Update 3 will be system components only, no firmware update. A firmware update may come laster as well, though, to cope with a few remaining issues in early startup.

Sorry about that. I mistakenly thought A1 firmware March5 was Update2. I guess I lost more brain cells in the sixties than I thought. The question should have been do I need to install the A1 firmware from March5 if the system is stable? It is a G4 XE.
Again my apologies,
John Paul

No, it's intentional that diskboot ignores HDs with a MBR, not a bug.

AmigaOS will never support MBR, it's too limited. If you now have both a MBR and a RDB on the HD and all partitions in the RDB and you only have to kill the MBR (overwrite the last 4 bytes in sector 0), you don't have to backup everything and reinstall, which wont help anyway unless MediaToolBox kills the MBR.
