@IamSONIC

On Windows XP Go to: START > SEARCH
When it loads tell it you want to search for "Computers or People"
Then " A Computer on Network"

Type the name you gave your AmigaOne in smb.conf
and press enter

Good luck

@IamSONIC

Getting desperate now, but have you tried re-booting both your amigaone and your PC?
DO the A1 first, then the PC

Check that nmbd is running in status

Yes i´ve rebootet the Amiga and the PC more than once. Is it possible that my Wireless Network DSL Router blocks anything ? The AmigaONE is connected by a wire and Internet works without any problems for months. In the evening i try to do the complete guide again.

@IamSONIC

you are not the only one having problems with nmbd another user (TCD) appears to have a problem very similar to yours re-nmbd. upon inspection with snoopdos it appears that it is failing on a file called lmhosts. Where it is, how do we fix it, I honestly don't know.

If anyone can help here, I would really appreciate it.

@Micky_C

Excellent guide! Well done. The only complaint I have is that it would have been very useful when I was trying to get my own Samba network up and running!

Although I have to say I received excellent support from other members, particulaly @jacken with his Samba installation guide.

hhttp://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=12148&forum=14#183952

How about adding a new section on setting up printing on the samba connection? Perhaps updating the report (if necessary) you prepared for Total Amiga (issue 8)?

@TrevorDick

That seems like a good idea. I didn't write the report, as until late last week, I couldn't figure out how to install samba!

But I will look into it.

Still waiting for a Super Samba Genius to answer my earlier lmhosts question though, I think the answer to that, could well have an entry on to the website to help others.

Anyone????

lmhosts is not absolutely needed to make Samba work. By default, Samba will try to resolve hosts names looking first for a file called "lmhosts", then in a file called "host". If those file don't exists (or don't have the host to IP info needed), it will try with wins (if a wins server is available), and in the end, will use the broadcast mechanism.
If you need lmhosts (because, e.g., other methods are unavailable or you suspect they are unreliable), create it in Samba:lib/ with one IPaddress hostname per line. Like:
192.168.1.1 AmigaOne
192.168.1.2 Windozzz

Edit: (Previously stupidly pasted somewhere else. )
So, if Snoopdos is reporting that nmbd failed to load lmhosts, that's nothing to worry about. But if nmbd stop running after that (try "status" from shell - if you had launched nmbd from a script - to see if it's still there), THAT's a problem (I'm not having here).

@AmigaPhil

And on WinXP, you can find the lmhosts file in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
Again they are not needed but can speed up things. Well at least in theory and maybe only on the first time you access a computer i.e. when it has to translate a text name ("AmigaOne") in the equivalent IP address (192.168.0.x).
After the first access, the IP address is cached.

@Mikey_C

You could also try and add "wins server = ip to the pc" in smb.conf...

Don't know if it helps but...

@Mikey_C

I have another problem, i finally got the amiga showing on my win xp pro (had written interface in smb.conf not interfaces *blush*), but when i try to access it it says I am not allowed. On my amiga i get this network message:

could not bind socket to port netbios-ns (137) (address already in use)

What have i missed here ? I see that it has something to do with nmbd.

@Mikey_C

When I finally managed to set-up the windoze side of my home network which includes a BT broadband modem/router I had help from a PC network guru. He was scared stiff of the Amiga side however and I managed to sort that out myself (using samba).

One of the problems on my PC network which had the possibility of 5 to 6 PC's connected wirelessly at any one time was the flakiness of the network perfomance. It was very hit and miss whether a PC connected to the newtork would show up in the local Windoze workgroup. After searching the various PC forums on the web he found a recommendation that the Netbios setting on all PC'x running XP & XP Pro should be set to Enable Netbios over TCP in the advanced Netbios setting for the Network connection (in my case a wireless network connection). Once this was done on all the PC's the network seemed to work very well with all PC's magicallyand all started to automatically appear in my Windoze workgroup. It also enabled me to achieve a stable samba connection for my µA1-C. I hope this of some help?

Can you give me precise instructions as to where that might be found on windows?

Cheers

I had exactly the same problem. However enabling the account PCGuest soon solved that problem, despite the fact that nobody was already installed, don't ask me why, it just worked, check your setting on that one. Also, try doing a search for computers once again and then when your AmigaOne shows up try accessing it that way.

Have you by any chance mounted NMBD twice? I don't quite know why that address would be called twice otherwise, any other devices or network programs installed already that could be using that port?

I must admit, I am stumped on that one. Anyone else who can shed some light? please?
