Possibly, but that's what I've heard.

You're suggesting that Hyperion somehow coerced Amiga Inc into taking their view

I am *not* suggesting that.

My comment was based on your remark that "It has long been thought that these demands were thought up not by Amiga inc, but by Hyperion." I believed you meant that there was either collusion or coersion going on behind the schenes. If I misunderstood, I apologize.

Quote:
Amiga inc. made various demands, some were about control. Some were about the use of specific technologies.

I don't remember the details but I believe one of the issues was about what graphics standard to use.

That makes perfect sense to me, especially with 20/20 hindsight at the sorry mess that is Linux audio and Gnome vs KDE. I don't know what the actual demands were but it it had been me, I'd have made a market survey, picked the most popular graphics (and GUI, sound, etc) library, and told the rest they're officially 3rd party from now on. Choice is good but the official platform must be focused.

The difference between Amiga/Hyperion/MOS and "the real world" is that the companies involved will not gleefully burn their bridges afterwards by repeatedly getting personal with other companies' leadership in public.

Yes, another big difference in "the real world" is that big companies who appear to be worst enemies will often quite happily do business with each other.

Exactly. The serious players know that you never know when you'll need to ask your "worst enemy" for help, while the dabblers can't see any further than their own petty ambitions. That's the real reason why there are so few tech giants, to be that successful you need to have someone with long term vision like Steve Jobs at the helm.

"We"? Dont you mean you and only you?

Ah, you got me. I confess, all the OS4 vs MOS vs AROS trolling has been me all along. I even learned German and Polish and learned to go for weeks on end without sleep so I could keep it up everywhere.

Thought so.

To be serious a while; I still wonder why Amigans are always anti-something. Amigans hating everything so much last 25 years must have made Amigans the most hated community ever. Maybe Amiga really deserved to die in 1994.

We should all unite in the fight against Apple.
At least that's where we want to take the fight.

I can see the TV advertisement now.
"I'm a PC"
"I'm a Mac"
Pan to right....It's Trinity from the Matrix.
"I'm an Amiga"
She raises two Uzi machine guns.
Unmanly screams of terror are heard...
She fires....
Blood-splatter hits the screen.
(gunshot) COMMODORE
(gunshot) IS
(gunshot) BACK!

Ok. No blood. How about a Magmum instead of an Uzi?
Probably makes a bigger noise.

That opens the door to misunderstanding, if someone types an "e" accidentally.

@samo79

No, it wasn't...

...although there are people ready to start a war in a thread where peace and love was invoked....

BTW,

there is really an opportunity. Could be possible to join the forces again? What are the real obstacle for this? I would be curious to know witch parties are contrary for a reunion.

Please produce the "party" list, although I see nothing festive about most of our amiga parties...
I do agree with the "witch" reference though.

Actually, the Copland project is a direct response to Gassée and Be Inc. Most negotiations do not occur in a boardroom and don't end up being widely publicized. Given Gassée's conduct prior to his ousting from Apple, Spindler would have rather seen the company fail than concede to Gassée.

@Hisoka999

I'm not a fan of boiled down reasoning. It doesn't do well to oversimplify complex issues as they paint the wrong picture. Hindsight is always 20/20 so I'm not interested in that particular aspect. We in the present can't learn anything of value from boiling down the arguments of the past. The best approach is to apply the zeitgeist. Things are always a lot more complicated than they seem, it's never black and white but raher a wide range of grey.

None of the points listed are, or at the time of their occurrence were insurmountable. Any such shortcomings of BeOS were mere engineering challenges. It's not like Apple after buying NeXT in '97 immediately released OS X, it took quite a few years to get to 10.0
