Throw a PV board my way and I promise I won't eat it!
I'll put it in a nice box together with a hard-drive and a few other things.

Would be interesting to know the measurements of the stand-alone version. Hacking the PV into a C64/C128/SX64-case would be cool.

But given the latest news, I am not sure if the final PCB size is even known yet...

@hatschi

Putting it in a C64 case would be neat, or even standalone in an A600/1200 case for that matter. Using Keyrah you could even use your classic keyboard.

However, I'd be more interested in making a laptopish portable machine. How big it will be depends on the PCB size and component height. It'll never be as slim and light as a real laptop/sublaptop, but hey, it's a DIY portable, so that's ok.

It`s pretty obvious that there won`t be any pv any time soon after all.

Yeah. If they're still at the pure design stage (ie all they have are some autocad files), we're looking at Christmas 2006 at the earliest. If they have prototypes, we may get lucky and be able to buy something before the end of summer. That is, assuming nothing else goes wrong (and reading between the lines, it seems like a lot has gone wrong with this project).

Ah well, I guess we'll just go back to sitting on our hands...

Wow. Think at the Vic-II as a graphics processors. And the SID for the audio.

Sounds like a very good idea. Better have a gfx-chip which certainly will be there than needing a special addon which might not get out. Think its a good idea to mail and tell preferences and interest? Might do so then...

You may want to re-think your stance on the 'hw-bugs-free' and buy a used A1. The SE is a lemon, stay away from it. The XE has the Ethernet vs VIA IDE problem which is nasty but you can avoid it with an IDE controller or apply a fix to the board. Some XEs also have the USB port debouncing issue which you can avoid by just not hot plugging devices or a hub. The MicroA1 has no known problems that I'm aware of. So yeah, there are some probs. with the A1 boards but only the Ethernet vs VIA IDE prob is a show stopper and it has a workaround.

The µA1-C has problems with interrupts from VIA, causing audio disturbance among
other things, as all A1's have.
DaveAE has investigated alot on these issues when making his drivers. This is public
knowledge.

It is probably spreading like influenza. I'm half way through
editing it to bring related comments together and remove
unnecessary material but I doubt anyone wants to post it
out of courtesy to Ack, unless with his permission, who will
have his chance to say whatever he wants to say very publically
during his demo on the 22nd.

I'm impressed with the guy. He has contributed a lot to getting
the hardware we do have going and clearly is on top of the
hardware side of things. and is open to input that can modify
his designs to advantage. He is also in the midst of related
business decisions. A mistake could wipe him out but fortunately
he is not the prisoner of fears that hold most people from
what they dream of doing. I do not doubt his capacity to deliver
but even the weather forecasters admit that timing is always an
issue. I look forward to May 22 and July 29 and am cheering for
him (and undisclosed colleagues) if that can do any good!
Unlike criticism, I think goodwill helps a lot.

Noel

Personally, I'd push for removing the slot myself. My experience with add-on boards for Amiga products has been rather dismal. I've seen far too many h/w guys put slots and connectors on their products with the promise of options to plug into them later only to be disappointed. In other words, I think the lifetime of the PV product will be too short to warrant the slot.

Thanks for the update of info. I would just as soon have the GFX built in, and if possible the mini-PCI for a wireless card or something else already produced, or maybe a mini TV-FM card ! Yep, I'm dreaming but its fun . .

I have to agree with you on those thoughts. I've met Adam from ACK Software Controls and dealt with him regarding my MicroA1 when I encountered a few issues getting it to power up after I purchased it through him about a year and half ago, and all I have to say that he's a very bright and decent guy. If things don't turn out rosy with his plans, I would have a hard time attributing it to anything intentional or sleazy, but rather to something that was out of his control.

Well, if you mean playback while recording, this has always been possible on any OS4 AHI supported soundcard.

USB+HD (even on sii0680) can cause irq loss and freezes. USB+audio can cause stutter (for some). Eth+audio will cause freezes.
The microA1 has extra logic which makes VIA IDE work with DMA but can cause heavily delayed IRQ's.
So, unless new hw shows the same problem, all A1 flavours are no good for any serious 'multi-media' (gosh I hate that term) use.

If it is an IRC log, then it was available for public view anyway. What's the big deal? It's not like you are keeping some big top secret press realease, now is it? If Adam said it in a public IRC then it should not be a problem.

@Codesmith

The July 29th date is for AmiRevival, where Adam expects to have PV hardware for demo and for sale from what I've heard.

I think one should still ask, I have not - he said so much and people
thinking of the high end machine need to know the philosophy. However,
it is only days before some matters subject to further decision might
be made known. Ack did not respond to prompts along the lines of:
"is this a press release".

OK here is a relevant snippet:
Quote:
jahc: when is the high end board going to come out?
ackcontrols: Goal is to have several products available for
AmiRevival show.

Exactly. Besides, Adam will be very busy working on his hardware projects and won't have time to play PR guy most of the time.

Yep... and Adam needs someone to do his PR work... He's not real good at that aspect (sorry Adam, you do the hardware, but get someone to help you for the PR)

Now since the IRC transcript has been posted, I'm thinking the following could be a feasable lineup:

I must say I'm suprised a bit by the latest info on the IRC log about a "high end board" that uses the 1.7GHz modules he is making for the A1 market. That was a bit unexpected. I'm not thrilled by all of his specs, but it's better than not having anything like we have now.

Running OS4 on a 1.7GHz board will be a thrill, (yes even at $1000). And if he couples the board with the lower speed 1GHz CPU card, then there should also be available a "mid range" model at a more moderate price. That would give the PV for lowend/classics, a 1GHz mid range box and a 1.7GHz high end box. That $1000 price is approximately $150 USD more than the announced price for the 1.7GHz CPU itself. Since the CPU's were announced at $500 and $850 USD, pricing could fall something like this:

PowerVixxen 1200- @400MHz $299 USD (already announced)
Mid-range Bigbox CPU+"High end" Mobo @1GHz $650 USD (possible mid range)
High-end Bigbox CPU+"High end" Mobo @1.7GHz $1000 USD (tentatively announced)

Basing that off of the original CPU prices of $500 and $850 respectively, and the 1.7GHz+Mobo being estimated at $1000. That is just speculation on my part, but it's easy to see that Adam can create a variety of price ranges based upon what he is doing.

Mid-range Bigbox CPU+"High end" Mobo @1GHz $650 USD (possible mid range)

---->

Mid-range Bigbox CPU+"High end" Mobo @1GHz $350 USD (possible mid range) without OS4/ but running Linux

is a good price.

Otherwise I would go for Efika and possibly PowerVixxen. You know, I am not rich like Amigans.
