@wawa

You beat me to it...

@Franko,
It used to stand for Managing Partner. However the definition wawa gave is closer to the truth these days.

@vox

I dont see where Gallium3D will help with accellerating (encoded) video display. There is still a buzzword called "DRM"...

It might help with non-encoded video streams, but this I also dont see yet. The buzzword "industry standard" means absolutely nothing. Its a word to blind the simple minds, nothing else. VHS was "industry standard" back then, too. We "elder" people know which format was the superior one. It was not the one promoted to "industry standard"...

Regarding Gallium3D I still suspect that its made with the "we have it, too!" sentence in mind, but not for actual use regarding AmigaOS-only software. I mean, more use than Warp3D has right now. Same goes for SMP and separated memory space.

We will see, if I am right or not.

Certainly not but features like SMP will obviously not be of relevance on single core machines. post12 (as answer to post 10)

That is not first instance they talked about SMP, I can dig other (older) similar posts.

Gallium3D

Gallium3D supports far more features than current Warp3D (like shaders etc.).

I think it is good to have more complete OpenGL implementation (and support for newer and faster GFX cards).

OK, but enabling OpenGL will finally make 3D possible at almost all Radeon cards.
That alone is great news to all users. SAM 440 users could fit much more powerful
Radeon 9800 for example, while full range of PCI-E Radeon cards opens.

This also sounds nice and useful for the future

Colin Wenzel and Tony Wyatt made very important progress e.g. a new, much cleaner, robuster, faster and simpler interface for Amiga file systems. Until now you had to be some kind of übergenius to be able to write a filesystem for AmigaOS. Just one example of many.

As well as that RadeonHD driver will be done before Gallium, but both will become part of OS.
Quote:
As we read, Mesa is done and we know about Hans work with RadeonHD. Wich stage we can wait that Mesa and Gallium with Radeon drivers come part of OS4

? This is one of the development goals for AmigaOS 4.2. Once Hans-Joerg Frieden has completed Warp3D support for the Evergreen range of AMD Radeon HD (5xxx/6xxx series), work on Gallium3D will accelerate substantially.

What would you expect also from oS 4.2?

- X1000 drivers
- Updated SAM 460 drivers
- stable USB 2.0 and some kind of USB 3.0 support
- ... maybe finalized Timberwolf

you realize, that youll first nee any applications compiled against that (and not against minigl, warp3d whatever there si now)

@pavlor
very vague hint as customary. usually something like that cant be taken wordly without confirmation, because it exactly doesnt state any fact, only lets people assume something based on the context its been said within. you realize that?

@wawa

You can recompile games when the time comes, MiniGL a simple OpenGL implemntation, Gallium 3D a more modern OpenGL 3D implemntation.

Same I can say about your assumptions...

We can only guess, what sort of multi-core support they will introduce. I (as BAF) hope for the best, your point of view is opposite (probably more realistic ).

@NutsAboutAmiga

you will have to partly rewrite the ports. minigl (even if it had very little functions last time i looked) is not very opengl compliant in contrary to storm mesa, that is a straight opengl implementation. the fuctions have different names and so on. i couldnt just compile opgl exapmles against minigl, i had to edit the sources.

edit: not to talk about applications there is no sources for, those will have to be wrapped somehow or will not work.

yes, but i have no information, i must be reasoning. and im doing it deliberately, everyone knows that. do you suggest hyperionmp is in the same position like me, namely that he either has no clue? because otherwise i consider it unfair to be compared with him in this respect.

There's no PCI version of the 9800. I think there may be PCI 9550 but extremely rare. It would probably be better to get a PCI-PCIe adapter and a more modern card anyway.

@Rob

The Radeon 9800XT has a Passmark 3D score of 181 under Windows.
Radeon HD5450=234 (PCI versions exist)
Radeon HD6450=293
Radeon HD5550=455
Radeon HD5570=704
Radeon HD6570=748
Radeon HD6670=1043
Radeon HD5670=1056
Radeon HD6850=2213

Looks like alot of fun to come.

@Franko

I thought it was "managing partner". The problem here is that the account was used by Ben Hermans when he was managing partner, now it's completely unknown to us mere mortals here who is posting what from that account.

Why it's not just banned is beyond me.

Yeah!, thats the AW I know...

Shooting the messenger was never very smart, just because the answer didn't suit you. Multiple users of an account have been allowed in the past for some.

I don't like multiple user accounts either. You never know for sure who you are exchanging words with.

It started long before I became active on AW. I believe DiscreetFX is another multiple user account.

I believe there is a simple solution to that --- let's just assume it's Ben, and treat everything written there as if it was written by Ben.

If it *isn't* Ben writing, then he may finally find himself motivated to clarify the issue (and if not, then that's a choice which implies that he has no problem with people believing he wrote those things, so he may as well have written them, anyway).

Of course, the most interesting thing about his participation in this whole thread is what he *hasn't* written. Which is a scary lot.
